Rumor: Rumors & Proposals Thread | Where's The Beef?

If ROR was right handed I would be all over it. I just don't see another left handed center being in our radar.
If the option is ROR or Ryan for a key draw no matter what side of the ice it is on I take ROR everyday of the week. Ryan is getting ice time partly out of loyalty and partly because he is a RHD who is good on faceoffs. But we have seen all season that that matters far less than what you can do after the draw.

That said I doubt ROR is a legitimate option for the Oilers. I am not sure he wants to play in Canada and I suspect that the cost would be very high. But if he was an option I can't see why any team would pass up a chance at at least seeing what it might take.

Here is a trade that could create some additional space if Kane is LTIR'd for the whole year.

To Edmonton: Justin Kirkland

To Calgary: Something worth very little.

Send Brown down and then LTIR Kirkland. You have just increased the LTIR space by $775K.

Kirkland is out for the year with a knee injury. He is a 28 year old career AHL'er so Calgary may well be happy to just say so money.

Do we only have a 2nd, 2rd, 6, and 7 for picks this year? I thought we had 2- 2nds and 2 3rds?

A 3rd

My understanding of the cap space vs. LTIR is you just can't add them together/mix them to fit a trade.

I.e if the Oil have 2mil in accurred space, and 5.15mil from Kane on LTIR (so ~7mil in total) at the TDL, they could add someone making 1.75, burning through the accured cap space, and then add someone making 5. But they couldn't add a single person making 6mil, as that would require dipping into both pools. A move needs to fit in via the accurred cap space OR Kane's LTIR space.

As for Puckpedia, they're sorta technically correct, where as the Oil right now can only exceed the cap by 4mil via a single transaction. But that ignores the fact the Oil can make a paper transaction (like a recall) right before the move to tuck themselves up against the cap, and then have the full 5.125 is available to them.

I bet a big reason J Brown is playing is so he can traded somewhere. He can play in the NHL but if Desharnais would get press boxed in the playoffs, Brown wouldn't be on the roster. But he's got a 3 year deal and he could tread water on a bad team where there's less possession in your favor and you can hit more

Nope, doesn't work. If anything that kills their ability to continue accuring space.

Yes, the LTIR space is increased by 775k, but the team salary also increases by 775k, so there's no benefit.

Where that would hurt them is that added 775k lowers the cap space which is accuring more.

I never liked Ty Smith. Didn’t like him as a prospect, didn’t like him when he was offered up as a trade target years later. Didn’t think his offence would translate to the NHL. Too reliant on a wrister from the blue line as a prospect. Thought his offensive skills were overrated. And always worried about his size without the necessary skill to overcome it.

That said I can never argue with the cost of FREE. And I always like the home town storyline possibly unlocking something in him. It’s just too bad he’s not a RHD, we’d have a room to take a Flyer on that side. We’re full up on the left side though, doesn’t seem like a fit.
It's funny because Holland/Wright had Ty Smith ahead of Q. Hughes on his draft 2018 draft board.

LMAO

It's becoming obvious to me that Bowman and Jackson screwed up this plan to accrue space and wait to add at the deadline. The East is so jam packed with teams fighting for wild cards that no one will be sellers. Same can be said for the west to a lesser extent.

That means way less sellers, more buyers and an expensive market where we have few assets to spend.

One other thing on the Puckpedia tweet: Their point about the team only being able to add 1mil at the deadline is all based on the current 22-man roster, so counting Josh Brown. There's zero chance that continues past this road trip.

Once they're back in YEG for their 6 game homestand, I'd expect Brown to be sent down and the Oil to go back to running a bare-bones roster. From Puckpedia's GMmode if you send Brown down after the Vancouver game on the 18th:

And that 3.1mil goes up if you also swap Ryan and Philp, and even higher if both Phip and Ryan are in Bakersfield for the 2 weeks the team has off during the 4 Nations.

Yes, that would leave them with 6 healthy D, but this is where the OIl have been gaming the system imo by having Regula hanging around. He's still on the season-opening IR and not counting against the cap, despite being around the team and learning the system.

Bouchards face on some of his aggregious turnovers speaks volumes. Looks scared and timid. No confidence in his defensive abilities. Consistently misses the puck when passing like his perception is off. Coffey needs to take him aside and work on his skating. Too upright and comes across as lacking urgency. Give him smelling salts on the bench. Anything. Can't have him cruising through the season like this.

He turned himself from a 11 mill defenseman to a 8 million dollar one.
Good. We can’t afford an 11 million dollar defenseman.

That’s not how LTIR works

Leevi Merilainen: 5 GP, 2.42 GAA, 0.911 Sv%
Jaxson Stauber: 4 GP, 2.23 GAA, 0.925 Sv%
Jakub Dobes: 3 GP, 0.97 GAA, 0.959 Sv%

It’s almost like calling up a strong goaltending prospect can result in them putting up better performances than the incumbents, securing your team points that it might have lost otherwise. Does Stan know this, or is he still too Busy (TM) to find out?

Which means it was better to start making a trade before January ESPECIALLY When players like Fabbro, Carrier, Fowler were available. Now, there aren't many sellers and not many defenders for selling.

Its not always the best to wait until the deadline. We wanted a defender last year and waited until the deadline last year and it didnt work. I don't know why this team doesn't be smarter

bringing up philp and savoie and having them contribute would bring lots of youth to the team.

The Ryan experiment needs to end.

If he doesnt want to go to Bakersfield, he can go sit at home and collect his pay.
Ryan is done and has been since last year's playoffs. Good guy, great teammate, but father time is undefeated.

I’ve always like the idea of keeping guys in the AHL till after the midway point. As some of the vets start to slow down a bit you bring youth for a boost

Tis a good point. I assumed as much that the Brown call up must be messing with the cap accrual projections we’ve been hearing all year. So we are in that $3Mish range of cap accrual still.

Now if only we can use it, and still have Kane’s LTIR relief on top of that.

Savoie is going to get better and better down in the A. He needs to be there until mid Feb at min. Until he starts potting 1.5-2 ppg week game , let him perculate. He has the ability to learn and adjust to the pro game.
