On that Athletic article, it has Gourde going to Vancouver. Does it have any player going to Edmonton?

Johnston: Edmonton Oilers
This one requires a little imagination. The Oilers have been humming along through December with Stuart Skinner logging a majority of starts and don’t have any apparent need at the position. However, they are a bottom-10 team in terms of save percentage and aren’t loaded with options beyond Skinner in the event they ever have to play an extended run without him. So while Gibson may not be a priority addition, he could be a sensible one — especially in the scenario detailed above where he’s being acquired with a $3.2 million cap hit. Edmonton is all-in on chasing the Stanley Cup this season and the years beyond it when Gibson is under contract. The veteran is unquestionably an upgrade on what the Oilers currently have as a No. 2 to support Skinner.

LeBrun: Edmonton Oilers
The acquisition of top-four, right-shot blueliner Alexandre Carrier by the Habs is pretty much writing on the wall for the 34-year-old Savard, a pending unrestricted free agent who understood entering this season he could get moved at the deadline. All things being equal, he’d rather stay in Montreal to finish it out this year, but that’s out of his control. His play has dipped this season, but in the context of a Habs team that’s not been very good defensively, I would imagine Cup contenders would look at Savard’s body of work and conclude it would travel well if he’s put in the right role. Enter the Oilers. There will be sexier trade targets on the market, to be sure, but I think as a sixth or seventh defenseman who can help kill penalties and who won a Cup with the Lightning — plus is a right-shot D — he’s a sensible idea for Edmonton. Especially considering I don’t think Savard would cost an arm and a leg. That will be appealing for an Oilers team without a first-round pick this year.

The Eastern media never fail to amaze with how out of touch they are.

That would be right on. We'd be screwed with any injury, even to Pickard. We should be looking at goaltending and yes it is still near the bottom of the league for team save percentage.

Gibson at 50% would be a reasonable gamble especially if someone like Skinner is being moved out.

You can look at goaltending but Gibson isn’t the solution.

Neither is Savard at RD.

Those are probably the two worst options you could trade for.

I'm all for upgrading the G backup and top four D any single day.
I also don't believe either Gibson (especially health wise) or a slow ass David Savard are the best options for this team.
I'd pass easily on either 2.

Gibson is in the J Skinner boat. 2 guys who haven’t had to try or put effort in for years.

That article is garbage considering it only discusses half a dozen players. Of all the ones available, I'd say that Provorov as the most realistic target. My guess is that none of those players end up in Edmonton.
The trick will be guys who are currently unavailable but will become available as the season wears on.

East media really are clueless… we need a puckmover not a friggin shutdown defender who can’t even defend

Just take a gander at Nurse/Kulak. Kulak can skate and handle the puck and he is smart. If they could find a RHD clone at anywhere close to Kulak's cap hit they would be golden. Savard is not that guy. One has to believe that Coffey understands this. They let Vinny walk and went with Stecher and Emberson. So evidence suggests they do.

Still laughing that the Flames lost the chance to draft Martone or Hagen this year with their Monahan trade.
I'm pretty certain Calgary only loses that pick if they aren't picking in the top 10. If they finish bottom 10, Montreal gets the Florida pick.

It was still an otherworldly poor offseason for them though. I will never understand what Treliving thought would happen.

They’re also playing themselves out of a bottom 5 spot this year, which is hilarious.

Lebrun might as well be on the Habs payroll, Hughes has been his source and Lebrun Hughes mouthpiece going back to when he was an agent.

I don’t see Gibson as a realistic target given his performance, contract and cost to acquire, doesn’t make any sense at all unless Ducks are keeping half that contract just to get rid of him for a weak return, which they probably aren’t doing.

Savard is even less likely to be on the Oilers radar. I think their defensive deployment and Nurse subsequent performance has made it pretty clear what kind of defender they’ll be targeting and it won’t be one like Savard.

That's my hope. Romanov is a guy who checks a lot of boxes, fits the competitive window and would be an immediate fan favorite.
Romanov would be a great target and a long term replacement for Ekholm but I think it’s highly unlikely the Isles move him. I’d also have some degree of concern about giving up a ton of assets for a guy from Moscow who’s live in New York for the last 3 years, you wonder how open that kinda guy would be to staying long term in Edmonton.

Even if you run Nurse Kulak you should still trade for a defenseman that can play top 4 minutes in case of injury IMO.

I've always been a fan of loading up depth. Stanley cup winning teams have guys on bottom pairings and 3rd lines come through in big ways.

I look at Tampa with Hedman/Sergachev/McDonagh all on the left side and you were basically happy to have any pair on the ice even if Cernak/Rutta/Savard were on the right side.

Pittsburgh had Phil Kessel feasting on the 3rd line.

It's hard to do regular season line combinations and then compare it to what teams look like for the playoffs. Ideally we will see Kane comr back from injury and push someone else down to the 3rd line or drive that 3rd line himself.

Good teams go into the trade deadline and address holes in the lineup. Great teams go into the deadline without holes and add depth.
