This doesn’t change anything. They’ll be able to add ~$8m worth of players with retention at the deadline. Could be more if they could get double retention.
I’m a perfect world.
we have a single extra defender. If we have any injuries to the forward group we will basically stop accruing cap.
And double retention is not something we can really swing with our laughable prospect pool and assets too.

I wonder if Shattenkirk looks at J. Schultz and is getting a little itchier to sign for cheaper with a NHL team like us?

Darnell is trash. He has stopped being physical, he can’t think or move the puck quickly, he’s not a PP specialist. He’s a D liability often. He isn’t top 3 in the majority of current NHL markets.

I hope he can play top 4 on the off wing here and the team can find a LHD partner at the TDL, but just think about that for a bit…top4 on his off wing when he isn’t top 3 on his natural side.

It doesn’t bode well. But I’m hoping…
lol Darnell is better than Bouchard right now

Ya, it’s a pretty low bar to be better than someone else on that Oiler D so far this season. No one is close to playing their best game.

No one is playing to their potential right now and we saw the same group go through the same situation last year. This isn't a roster construction or even coaching issue. At some point the players need to look around and figure things out. The team is too talented and hasn't put in the work defensively.

This essentially guarantees we can’t change the team almost at all outside of adding a cheap middle pair d.

Oh well.
That was always the plan. Why do you think the focus was on accruing as much cap space as possible?

I don’t think an Offensive D man like him is an answer for us. It’s using valuable an asset on a type of player that doesn’t make us better.

Right now we have 2 defensemen that can create offense, 3 if you include Nurse.

I know a lot of people are in love with the idea of LTIRing Kane until playoffs, but to me getting Kane up to speed with 6 weeks+ of games is a much more ideal situation. Trying to get him up to speed in the heat of a playoff series is a risky proposition and to me a healthy Kane who’s back up to running at or near full speed is going to have a much bigger impact than any addition that could potentially be acquired at the deadline.
I know Kucherov and Stone were able to do it but there’s a huge talent gap between those two and Kane. Ideally he goes on a conditioning stint around the trade deadline then plays the last month of the season.

Bouchard never really played with urgency but it’s even worse this season. I’d still like to try him with Nurse and make him earn his next contract.

That Nurse contract has affected this team in a major way, that cap hit has prevented us from fixing our blue line and is the direct reason we've lost several young players due to cap issues. And there's 6 years to go. One of the most consequential decisions this team has made in a long, long time- much worse than the Lucic contract which we destroyed Chia for.

I heard with this cap, you cannot do more than 1 move with it. You acquire a player worth 5.25 or less and that's it. Is that true?

Not true, they can fit in multiple players that have a combined cap hit of $5.25 million.

Plus, if Kane stays on LTIR beyond the deadline until the playoffs that would be another $5 million in available space.

But as @soothsayer said, they just got to get to the deadline with this space. Not sure they won't be forced to use the cap space prior to that.
