Looking at the last 10 years of 1st rounders
2024-
Sam O'Reilly
2023-traded
2022-
Reid Schaefer traded with 2023 for Ekholm
2021-
Xavier Bourgault-- traded for nothing on current roster
2020-
Dylan Holloway - Offer sheet return 3rd rounder
2019-
Philip Broberg - offer sheet 2nd rounder
2018-
Evan Bouchard -Still on roster
2017-
Kailer Yamamoto- cap dump last off season
2016-
Jesse Puljujarvi- now with pens. Was traded for a guy in Europe who we gave the rights up to last off season
2015- McDavid
So for the last 10 1st rounders we have Ekholm Bouchard, and McDavid. 2nd and 3rd.
It is the price you pay for being in win now mode. But the other state I look at it is how many player taken outside of the 1st round have played 10+ games in the NHL with the oilers or assets we received for them,
2015-- Jones, Bear and Marino. We got a pick for Marino who is in uni. Bear was traded for Foegele. Jones for Duncan Keith.
2016-Benson- UFA. Markus Niemelainen--back in Europe. Vinny D now in Vancouver
2017-S. Skinner
2018- McLeod traded for Savoie. Kesselring traded for Cam Dineen and Bjugsted
2019-no one after the first.
2020- No one after the first
2021-no one after the first
I stop at 2021 because after the first it is about development.
At the end of the day are scouting has let us down for picks after the first and we have had a lot of bad asset management in picks we have traded away.
There is a reason why our farm system is depleted. Bad picking and trading away picks for nothing
