Looking at how Fabbro is doing in Columbus, I'm even more baffled than I was when it happened (and I was very baffled even then) that Nashville waived a 26 year old top 4 Dman because he makes $2.5m. Even Chiarelli would have at least gotten something for him. They essentially traded Fabbro and Tomasino for a 4th round pick, that's Bad Asset Management 101.

I hate to jump in on the "Do Something Stan" bandwagon but he couldn't have offered a 6th rounder or something for Fabbro? I'm aware of the salary but they could have made it work.
I had advocated for Fabbro as a target going back to last season and was hoping they’d make it happen when there were reports they were having discussions with Preds. Obviously salary was the issue with the Preds unwilling to retain and oilers unable to absorb his entire cap hit. They should have explored paying a team to take half and given Preds a late rounder or equivalent prospect, at that point a team would be retaining less then a million dollars, it likely wouldn’t of been more then a 4th maybe a 3rd.

Fabbro really was the perfect target. Nashville has always had an eye for drafting defenders even though they haven’t been handling them as well lately. Fabbro has shown he can play big minutes against top competition and stylistically he was a great fit, he was affordable and likely could have been a value extension. Oilers chose to stick with Emerson who’s a very similar player and cheaper but just doesn’t have the same experience.

We may have had a claim in on him but BJS are below us in the standings so their claim would have won.

And While, 2.5 is not a lot--do we know when Kane is back? My math sucks at figuring out the rules for LTIR--how long would Kane need to be on the LTIR so we could keep Fabbro?

This is our cup year. We are allowed to LTIR up to 20 milllion right? Like TB and LV right?
The question now is who is next on injury doc. And who is the next D we need to target and not miss?

Well he was better than Stecher or Dermott. Please don't turn this into an argument you usually have with me. I'm stating my opinion nothing more and I'm not trying to go against you.

No. Just no. Ceci skated it to center while looking off the breakout options, forced the wingers to jamb on the breaks, then dumped it to nobody cuz the forwards were too flat flooded to forecheck

Ceci was anti- breakout

If this team brings in Erik Karlsson, I will join the Stan Bowman can f*** off bandwagon right after.

This would be the stupidest add they could even consider. Anyone that has watched him play the past 2 years can see that he isn’t what ails the Oilers. Can’t play defence to save his soul (he also doesn’t play goal). He averages 45 points a season since he left Ottawa 8 years ago and that’s including his 101 point supernova season in San Jose. He deterioration the past two years is evident.

My gawd, I’m wasting good electricity even typing this out. WTF.

I haven't watched much Pens lately. But I just watched a game. He's still a really good player. Soft as baby shit on Defense, tries to be smart defensively instead of hard defensively.

But he skates like the wind still, he definitely hasn't lost his legs. Still has elite vision, outlets pucks quickly and can find options in the O-zone. He gambles alot with his quick puck moving though, he doesn't value puck possession like the Oilers do, but I think that's more on Sullivan and the Pens system. Get him playing Oilers hockey and he'll be a beast here.

Karlsson would not help this team, get a more defensive minded guy instead
What's wrong with our defence? Not like we need a cycle breaker type, we rarely lose the possession battle these days .

We need a puckmover who is decent defensively AKA a top 4 Dman. That’s Matheson. Don’t forget that he’s playing top pair in Montreal. Here, he’d be 2nd pair
MM is not okay in his own zone. Montreal is 2nd worst team in the league. and MM is getting so much TOI cause they do not really have anyone else. They got a few good guys developing. MM is not the answer here.

Everytime MM gets traded the posters from that team are over the moon only to change their mind about 6 months later

In the Playoffs, you're going to want more difference makers. Not vanilla shit like Ceci that just survives and plays a quiet, solid game.

A D-man that can make plays, make passes, score goals. We defend as team anyways, ain't no one doing it alone in the playoffs.

If you are worried we got slower. Karlsson's the answer. Skates like the wind.

If you want us to break the puck out and control possession in the o-zone. Karlsson's the answer. Elite vision.

If you want to replicate all the wheeling and dealing possession dominance that Ek-Bouch bring to our O-zone game on our 2nd pair. Karlsson's the answer.

Playoffs bring out the best in every player. Brings out their TOP game. Ain't no one on the market going to have a higher top end game than Karlsson. I bet he's hungry for the chance.

Not sure if anyone has pointed it out but Emberson and Kulak have played together the past couple games and we're absolutely caved.

Last game against Colorado they had a 29 CF% (Kulak) and 30% (Emberson) with only Drake Caggiula being worse. The xGF% was 11 and 17% respectively and a HDCF of 0%.

The night before against Utah they didn't fair any better. Emberson was a 7 CF% with Kulak at 28%. The xGF% for Emberson was an abysmal 0.47% with Kulak at 9.89%.

If Kulak isn't playing with Nurse, I'm not sure I like these two together as a pair. I think that might be part of the reason the Oilers want someone who can play both sides. They can either play with Nurse or elevate Kulak and have them play with Emberson.

regrettably i'm not sure i believe that LOU will start the tank and rebuild. Pulock even then would not be available except for what Lou would want as Pulock is the kind of D that he covets.
We may just end up letting Kulak/Nurse play and strengthening our third pair. Not ideal but the D would be stronger overall than now.

And how do we fit is 10mill for this and two more seasons?

Lou wont keep money in a trade for Pulock--that is another problem

Oh I'm operating under the assumption we can get him at 50%. Pens fans would take a 1st and 3rd for that. Which would be an absolute steal.

And? They have some games with 70 and 80's for xGF%.

Several problems

We sort of cannot trade out 25 or 26th first rounders due to the conditions to the trade.
even at 50% that means 5 mil added to this year but more importantly the next 2 years (please do not say "oh we will just toss him on the LTIR")
Bouchard's new contract will be for between 10 to 11 million--If you want Karlsson --we trade Bouchard?

EK is also 34 and there is no middle ground with his health
