This is totally TJ Brodie.

Left handed D who likes to play the right side.

Moves the puck.

Has 1 year left after this season at a low cap hit (Chicago could probably retain).

No doubt Bowman keeps tabs on his old team too. He hasn't worked out in Chicago, probably the ask will be cheap.
He said they would make an Ekholm like impact. That doesn't sound like Brodie to me

For what it's worth, Matheson is coming to be #3/4D here, not #1D, so that will help him find more success.
That's the key about Matheson. You're not looking for a 25:00 avg toi guy on a deep rebuild Canadiens team with often baby sitting duties. Not really a surprise his game has wobbles. You're looking for the utility of an 18:44 d-man of his usage as a Penguin. Now the way Knoblauch has managed d-deployment there could a viable path to a Kulak Matheson two-way middle pairing with Nurse and Emberson a more shutdown role and PK.

A major challenge is acquisition cost with Montreal and within a likely competitive market if Les Habs decide to flounder without their quality, big minute d-man.

I think I see what you mean now. I thought you meant overplaying defensemen is the reason they're at .500 as in they were playing bad because they were overplayed.

I don't really see why it isn't sustainable until the deadline. Kulak has always been a good #4/5D. Him averaging 18 minutes of 5v5 instead of 15 isn't that big of deal to me. It's not like Ceci should have been sustainable in the top4 either. I think they're fine there for now.

The real issue to me is Dermott and I think that's a spot you can actually fix now because you won't mess with your cap structure. Throw a 6th rounder at a Jack Johnson or something. Having an actual NHL defenseman that you can trust on the third pairing will bring the top4's minutes down without using all your cap and getting rid of the option to add at forward/goalie later.
Okay...so temperarily sustainable? I can get behind that.
The team should be able to get into late Feb/early March as is. Its not ideal but its doable IMO.

As for Dermott...I agree with you on that as well. If they can somehow shore up the bottom pairing fairly soon it allows for a better TOI distribution on D for the next couple of months.
I dont want the team to end up with fatigued Dmen once the playoffs arrive.
Especially with Ekholm and Bouchard.
Ekholms TOI has increased 2 minutes (compared to last year) so far this season.
Over 60 games thats a big deal especially when you consider that the team played 107 games last season.

What we've already been talking about, but tosses in the added hint of term left.

I wonder if this is Fowler and the holdup is that he's out 2-4 weeks with an "upper body injury":

-Puck mover
-Can play the right side
-Has one year left after this one

I just don't see how on earth the cap works unless we get double retention, but even 50% is going to up the price significantly given the extra year. OTOH, he was having a very poor start and at full ticket was too expensive for most contenders to acquire, so retention by Anaheim might just end up being the cost of doing business.

The only other player I can think of is Erik Gustafsson and Stauffer has a weird fascination with him. The cap makes way more sense, but I'd be absolutely against trading even nothing for him. He's a third pairing guy who posts third pairing results and we do not need another one of those.

ChatGPT thinks this is Hampus Lindholm.
I asked ChatGPT what we would need to trade to get Lindholm, and here's what I got:

Likely Trade Proposal:

  • Edmonton Oilers: Xavier Bourgault (or similar high-end prospect), Kailer Yamamoto (or similar NHL roster player), 2024 first-round pick.
  • Boston Bruins: Hampus Lindholm
There was also a string of text that suggested we might need to add Brock Nelson (??????), so yea I think all of our jobs are safe for a little while longer.

We could probably get XB and Yamamoto back for a couple of 7th's so it's not impossible.
