I want Jiricek more as well but an expiring contract isn't bad either because, if the player doesn't work out, you can cut him loose

Yeah could be a replacement for Arvidsson. Kapanen's xGF% has been kinda crap for a few years now, as its been around 44% for 3 years now. So don't expect anything good from this player.

I agree entirely the PP is killing us. When our PP struggled in the past it always seemed like Woodcroft had the secret sauce to get it back on track, he would always go back to what the core of what makes our PP work and then layer complexity after the basics were right.

At the moment I kind of want to fire both Gulutzan and Schwartz, not saying I got better replacements lined up, but both seem to be failing us in their roles.

Just looking at the age of the bottom 6 on this team....

Henrique - 35 (by the end of the regular season)
Janmark - 32 (by the end of the regular season)
Ryan - 38 (by the end of the regular season)
J Skinner - 33 (by the end of the regular season)
Brown - 31 (by the end of the regular season)
Perry - 40 (by the end of the season)

The average age (on lines 3 and 4) for the start of the playoffs will be 35 years old.

Anyone else see this as a potential probelm?

Pretty much everybody has talked about how age and speed aren't our friends anymore. So yes, most people consider this a rather big issue.

You would think.
Not easy to solve though.

Aside from Philp (a player I think should be with the big team) there really isnt a lot of young depth waiting in the wings ready to take bottom 6 minutes.
Couple that with the lack of team speed and an abundance of non physical players and it becomes clear that this team needs a lot of work before the playoffs start.

Not to mention the defence which is below average at best.

Bowman has a lot of work ahead of him.
 
I don’t mind taking freebie flyers on players. Not high on Kapanen at all, but with his speed and experience, maybe he can break out on a decent team.
 
I thought it would be interesting to look at last years production vs this year for our forward group.

You can see that in terms of TOI, our forwards have seen similar totals. They might be deployed differently (special teams, matchups, etc.) but for the most part the same guys that were here last year have seen similar ice time.

Hyman statistically has seen the largest regression from last year, with McDavid and RNH not far behind. It's obviously concerning that the entire top line has regressed this much since last year. Part of this is shooting %, where we will likely see Hyman, RNH, Henrique and Ryan improve considerably.

Another part is the powerplay suffering. If we strictly look at EVP, the gap is smaller. In fact, Draisaitl has been better 5v5 than last year, McDavid goes from -0.43 to -0.14 as well, even Nuge goes from -0.42 to -0.21. It's alarming that Hyman's 5v5 production has dropped so much.

It's also obvious that this team is missing Evander Kane who was able to provide a 0.57 P/G last year in 77 games (with 24 goals). Getting him back healthy will help the Oilers down the road.

One thing I think is kind of interesting is that everyone seems to be dumping on the new guys Arvidsson, J. Skinner and Podkolzin. Obviously, we are hoping for more out of them but when you compare it to last year, it's not like their production is considerably worse than Foegele, Holloway and McLeod.

Given how Skinner and Arvidsson are basically producing the worst they ever have in their career. Logic would dictate that their shooting % will bounce back and be closer to what they have historically had (or at least be above the 10-11% that Foegele/McLeod had last year. Essentially the "depth guys" to this point have been outproduced by 6-7 points to this points or 4-5 goals - not a large margin.
