Oilers Biggest Roster Need?

I don't get our team. Why are we married to our goalies?

Colorado has had goalie struggles very similar to ours. Except, they are trying things. Wedgewood will be the 5th goalie they try this year.

I hope maybe we are just waiting for more of a slam dunk, but Wedgewood is no joke.

A lot of chatter about Blackwood, but are there actually any credible rumours that the Oilers are interested? I know management has come out and stated that the team will sink or swim (tread water) with Skinner but you’d have to think the team has to be looking at other options.

So Skinner has shown he's good enough to get this team to the finals, he's shown he gets better as the season progresses and is young, so I can see why they don't quit on him, even if we're not happy with his consistency (which is TOTALLY fair)

Pickard gives them good enough starts and he's super guy in the room that the guys really like, plus the lack of cap space.

Me personally wants to believe they are looking for another option, but me in reality thinks they assume it will be fine, then they'll panic.

I would be sincerely shocked if they weren't, he absolutely available, largely cost effective on the cap and seems like he can add to the position, they just lack any kind of urgency.

Though I don't know teams like Carolina or Colorado are interested in trying him out, Carolina wants more of a Vet if they get one (it's my guess) and Colorado is just going nibble, like the deal they made today.

Relax, Stan’s Busy (TM). He wanted in on Annunen but his hands were asleep from having sat on them for the last two months and so couldn’t wake them up in time to send Sakic a text. Happened with Fabbro too, no biggie.

Seriously, you have Colorado literally giving away a still-young goalie with superior numbers to Skinner at every level and year because they have realized he’s not the answer, and here we are protecting the feefees of mustache boy while he goes on yet another press tour about how not in his own head he is. There’s a reason the Avs have a Cup since YouTube was invented and we do not.

I am fine with keeping Skinner. I've harped on this a bit on these boards, where what I want is for the team is to have a true tandem. There should be someone who actually challenges Skinner to be the starter. Or heck, maybe Skinner needs more rest to be good.

If that is Pickard, then fine. Make him take the reigns as our starter then. It seems like the team doesn't view him that way though. It's all about riding Skinner and hoping he figures it out.

I get that Skinner was our goalie during our playoff run but he was very up and down. We didn't win anything because of him but overall he wasn't a weakness either. It's not a reason to marry ourselves to him. There have been a lot of goalies that got to the finals but aren't seen as good goalies today. Kuemper, Murray, Thompson. The league has parity. If you make the finals, it's not proof that every core player is top notch even.

So I don't, personally, believe Pickard is fine, if you're going to upgrade, he's the spot, imo.

Like trading Pickard in a deal for Blackwood (I'm coming around lol) makes alot of sense, because the Oilers' goaltending gets better, no question, but whether or not they have the will do to that is to be determined.

And it's obviously Pickard++ for Blackwood, the ideal deal would be

Pickard, 2nd & 5th for Blackwood & a 4th to WSH to eat 50%.

Get Blackwood at $1,175M with Skinner is a decent tandem.

Why is this management always so reactive all of the time? Determine your needs and go out and get them. I realize our cap limits how proactive we can be, but good lord, get creative! That’s what you’re paid for! This patiently waiting for trade deadline is detrimental.

Partly cap space, partly the worry about assuming the answer is in the room, because if you spend assets on "fix" and it doesn't work they're "worse off"

They're all conversative types with this stuff, so those types tend to react to situations rather then plan or make an effort to mitigate it.

Then go get Cam Talbot. Blackwood is going to be inconsistent because he plays on a very bad team, Skinner wouldn't even survive in the league if he played there, he'd go the way of Ben Scrivens and wash out.

Blackwood has always been inconsistent. Its why NJD gave up him as well.

Your making an excuse for his play. Blackwoods play independent of the team has always been up and down like a yoyo!
One game he is a hero make 44 saves and 2 games later he lets in 4 goals on 11 shots.

Making excuses is the hallmark of Skinner fanboys, lol. He plays on a team that is one of the better chance supression teams in the league, and go look at his stats.

.902 in San Jose would be higher here. That's just common freaking sense.

Are you saying i have no common sense? I have followed MacBlack for some time. I have always followed goalies.
Blackwood has super athletism, his side to side is spectacular.
But he can't put it together from one game to the next.
Its as frustrating as hell for players, fans and management.

I suspect your watching numbers. And especially with Goalies you need to understand what that goalie is.

If you think his numbers wouldn't be better here or on any contending team, yes you lack common sense.

He plays on one of the worst teams in the league, of course that's going to impact your numbers, any goalie would have their numbers go down and their consistency up and down on that team even the Vezina winner.

He should have been in on a goalie who completely shat the bed in pre-season and then performed so poorly that he barely got any starts?

Maybe Wedgewood will get back into shape, but his performance in Nashville was atrocious. It's not like he was great last season in Dallas either.

That's not a given at all. Sometimes goalies shine when they have no real pressure on a bad team, while failing to keep that level when playing for a better one. It is also possible for goalies to play better when facing a ton of action. E.g. every team will allow a certain amount of high danger chances, it is inevitable, if a goalie isn't good at stopping those, he will look worse on a team that gives up fewer chances in general than on a team that sees him face a lot of shots.
