I'm getting tired of this hindsight bullshit. We were all loving the signings on July 1st.

Holloway had 9 regular season goals and 18 points in his NHL career as an Oiler. Meanwhile, Skinner is a proven goal scorer with 5 30 goal seasons and 1 40 goal season.

Fwiw Holloway still only has 17 goals (14 even strength) to Skinners 11. So Holloway playing top line minutes has 3 more EVG over Skinner who keeps getting scratched or put in the bottom 6.

Who is to say Holloway wouldn't be in the same position here? But yeah go ahead and keep calling people with your crystal ball.

Like the Oilers lose 4-1 and you're in here complaining about a guy who scored last game and was scratched tonight. What are we doing here?
Part of being a good manager is predicting and forecasting what your players potential is. Not just hindsight and statistical history.

Prioritizing Skinner over Holloway was a big mistake.

The Oilers opted for veteran experience over budding youth and that veteran experience is dragging the team down right now. Just a huge misstep in an important year. Still have no clue why they didn't match the Holloway offer sheet.

Based on rumors
Stetcher, 2026 1st for Savard @50%
Kapanen, 2nd for McCarron

😫

My point is that they have to move Skinner out if Kane is coming back because he's their only moveable contract. If they don't then this is the team going into the playoffs because they have no cap space, assuming that they don't have Kane's LTIR money.
Skinner has a full NMC. Arvidsson is the moveable contract.

How is it a bad take by Gregor?

Where was Jackson on this?
If he wasnt entirely sure he could have consulted with other Oilers management about Holloway.
If he did in fact do that and he was told that it wouldnt be a good idea to match then thats a major fail.
Its actually a major fail regardless of how you look at it.

Instead the Oilers signed Jeff Skinner...a much older pretty much useless one dimensional 5x5 player (who doesnt skate very well and is weak along the boards) for a $3M cap hit.

Apparently the Blues knew the value of an Oilers player better than Oilers Management...and this is the management team we are relying on to build a Stanley Cup winner?

Hmmm...

Lol useless… he’s just being used like shit.

We all know how the Edmonton sports media operates. Once they turn on you, you’re done.
Of course, they'll never point the finger at their Masters. They have their marching orders. Everyone claiming "Spec W" fails to realize that there's a deeper problem than Skinner that he won't address because it would get his press coverage revoked.

I believe the answer to bullet #2 is in bullet #1.
But bullet #1 (the goaltending) remained unchanged from last year.
The difference in team speed, and thus slower back checkers up front in particular, is likely why the Oilers have been worse against the rush this season.

Skinner has playoff pedigree? LOL now I’ve heard it all. Dude had a .883 save% in the 22/23 playoffs and a .901 save % in the 23/24 playoffs. Nice pedigree. If management doesn’t address the goaltending at the deadline then I’m boycotting the team for the rest of the season.
Other teams are bringing stallions to the horse race, the Oilers are bringing a donkey.

Interestingly, the stanley cup winning goal was a goal off the rush, technically. But it was a wrist shot from the top of the circle that went in short side. If your goalie can't stop that 9 times out of 10 in normal circumstances, and 10 times out of 10 in a 1-1 stanley cup final, your team is in massive trouble. Skinner gives up virtually every good rush chance and way too many weaks ones on top of that. Kills the team and drains the defense.

And here I was singing JJ's praises on July 1.

I'm a f***ing idiot.
We all were my friend, but that was also before the offer sheet fiasco in which everything started to go to shit with that situation then hiring Bowman shortly thereafter.

On paper, signing Arvidsson and Skinner to short term contracts, bringing back the 3rd line which was really key in the last two series in particular and then the McLeod for Savoie trade all looked like good moves. There's still a playoff run to be had so that's when the moves will be properly judged but it's been a disaster thus far and I actually don't pin that entirely on management, Knoblauch is totally sewering Skinner for some reason despite him doing everything he's been asked to do in a bottom 6 role. One of the most perplexing handlings of an Oilers player that I can remember and this is a team that employed Dallas Eakins.

Skinner delusion needs to be studied.

I don't think the bottom 6 is really the problem with this year's team anyway.

The core problems are the same and have remained the same the last 2-3 years (if not longer). We don't have an actual top 6, we don't really even have an actual reliable "second line" like most contending teams do.

This has never been resolved.

The lack of an actual starting goaltender has never been resolved. Even the Canucks in the 2000s at some point gave up on Dan Cloutier and got Roberto Luongo. We're still spinning our wheels stuck in the same spot in these areas and until that changes ... welp, you probably know the rest.
The issue with our forward lines is McDavid hasn't performed well without his line being stacked.

The RNH - McDavid- Hyman line has good, not great results (54.6 GF% though the HDCF and XGF% are in the low 60's)

and

The Drai - McDavid - Hyman has insanely good results (76.9 GF%)

outside of those trios McDavid has largely floundered, where as Drai has been able to have relatively solid results with a wider variety of players.

The coach has understandably tried to find something that works so he can keep McDrai separate and we can have scoring depth, but its starting to feel inevitable that we'll stack one line in the playoffs.

Based on current in season results I believe our next best line options are Arvidsson - RNH - Brown (RNH has independently strong results with each of these 2).

Then Henrique and Perry are performing well as a duo, really strong GF% and GA suppression.

It's truly strange. Rishaug for example won't even entertain suggestions that Skinner might not be good enough despite all the data against him, but he'll go on for 30 minutes complaining about the Oilers hit total in a game they win. I stopped listening to GYB in January because of that nonsense.

Think other teams are laser focused in on studying video on McDavid-Hyman, particularly trying to shut down all the easy gimmes Hyman got last year from McDavid.

Knob isn't making offensive adjustments IMO and is getting outcoached.

This is what happens when you make a Cup Final, teams will really video and prep on you much harder.

RNH - McDavid - Hyman
X - Draisaitl - Savoie
Skinner - Henrique - Perry (soft ozone mins line)
Podkolzin - Janmark - Brown (shutdown line)

Trade Arvidsson, waive Kapanen, find another winger for Leon (who isn’t Kane), and maybe a bottom-6 guy if that third line is too slow. And stick to the lines damn it.

Ekholm - Bouchard
Nurse - X
Kulak - Emberson

Trade Klingberg and find a partner for Nurse who isn’t some guy who hasn’t played in the league in years. If no one is available, trade for a bottom pairing guy and move Kulak up to the second pair.

X / Skinner

Find a f***ing goalie. And waive Pickard or send him out in the same deal.

The decision to sign Jeff Skinner was a head scratcher.
Pretty much a useless player that scores the occasional goal.

Thats why his occasional defenisve plays stand out so much...he doesnt accomplish much of anything otherwise.

Ultimately Skinner is an absolute waste of $3M in cap space.
Holloway at anything under $3M would have been much smarter.
It really makes me wonder how it is that this organization cant see the value on its own players...the very players it developed but yet goes outside the organization and takes a risk on a player who was bought out.

Really dumb.
There has to be some politics or some locker room antics going on. Broberg walking for 4.5 million or whatever makes sense. Holloway being let go for 2.2 makes absolutely no sense. (you move Perry, Skinner, Arvy or whatever you have to do)

Clearly they were sending a message that if you are going to sign offer sheets in Edmonton we are not going to match them. It obviously should not have gotten to this point. Massive fail.

We may have been loving the Skinner signing, but we don't watch Skinner close enough so our opinions were just a fairytale. Our scouts watch Skinner close.

The reason why it was a head scratcher is because KNOBS WON"T PLAY HIM. Maybe consult with coach before you sign a guy. He's slow AF, useless if he doesn't score goals and IMO seemed like an absolute panic signing after Debrusk moved on.

Yah I listen to / love GYB but I struggle through the goaltending talks. They called him a top 9-16 goaltender in the league and they all agreed.

Based on what? Good feelings? Literally everything says otherwise.
