If Hyman and Ekholm were 27 instead of many years older, sure that might be the case, but this is an old team past Connor and Leon.
They have to take this year seriously and by "they" I mean this front office. If they don't get something significant done, then what have they done since game 7 of the Cup Final?
They f***ed up in the summer by signing three bad contracts and got their stupid asses offer sheeted and lost two of their better young players for peanuts. If they don't have a good deadline, that means basically a full year of shit from them.

As much as I love Ekholm, he's looking slow already which is what I worried about at the time, and why I was on the Chychrun train. Maybe Hymans 50g season was the equivalent of Nuge's 100pt, and we never see anything close again.
I can definitely see a path for this team which leads to McDavid leaving. Just assuming he will stay no matter what, seems foolish. The team needs to go all in, trade every pick and prospect besides Savoie imo, get the bums off the team and give Davo the same help other superstars have gotten.
I think he will stay more than likely, but I do think there is also a chance, a significant one that it goes the other way just to be clear. I don't view it all as a given slam dunk especially if this year ends in a frustrating way. He doesn't have to sign on July 1st at all, he can opt to let it ride on the following season.
His 20s are drawing to a close at the end of this season, he has to give some thought about whether this team should be entrusted with his remaining prime years.
The management has to seriously step their game up. That off-season was garbage and they need to show something this trade deadline otherwise it's a full calendar year of basically shit from them at a critical juncture in this era. They can't be stupid about this.
For Bowman and Jackson, you guys better get something done and it better be something good in the next couple of weeks. Recess time is over.
At one point there was some discussion around Tuch from Buffalo....was he really available, was Buffalo taking calls?...I'm sure someone here has some valid insight into this.

No. I think it definitely can improve but it's also nowhere near as dire as some make it. Bowman nailed it...tending is nothing more than a hot topic now and there's no in between or middle ground.
It's safe to say Canada won gold b/c of Binnington and his 3rd period/OT heroics.
Care to guess if he would have seen the ice if it were a fan decision? Absolutely f' in not!! Fans were losing their mind and wanting to fire everyone surrounded around team Canada
There's a reason Jackson/Bowman haven't prioritized goaltending as a major issue.
Personally, I'd upgrade Pickard w/ Lyon at the TDL

The difference is Binnington has a track record of doing that on the biggest stage, so it's not like it was "fall out of your chair" surprise either. Everyone knows he's won a Cup and played huge in those playoffs and also was frustrating Colorado in the 2022 playoffs until Kadri injured him. Who knows how that series goes otherwise.
I thought I'd look back on that ... and yeah ... Binnington .944 in game 1 (Colorado barely wins in OT) and .968 in game 2 (Blues win 4-1) then Kadri injures Binnington early in game 3 (Binnington stopped all 3 shots to that point) ... man you really have to wonder if the Blues beat Colorado in that series if Kadri doesn't "accidentally" injure him. The Blues were up 1-0 in that game and then lost it after Binnington went out.
Colorado got a massive, massive break there, then against us they only had to face an injured and gassed 40 year old Smith. Very fortunate for them. And then that Tampa team was totally gassed after two previous Cup runs.
They caught a lot of lucky breaks in that run.

You're probably not going to believe me guys but here's a tidbit my source told me on Feb 13th (I kind of doubted them when I got told this), they said, on Feb 13th, that Evander Kane is someone that is now on the block. Team is kind of frustrated with his antics when it comes to his timeline on when he's back and that he has until March 1st to give the team a list of where'd want to go.
I honestly thought he was off his rocker but he may be right on this. Bowman told Seravalli that he will have more clarity on March 1st. He told him this on Friday.
My source may have just thrown shit at the fan but it sounds interesting at least
I view it pretty dire when both Skinner and Pickard rank in the bottom with the likes of Vladar, Ersson, etc of the worlds. That simply can't happen on a team that has shown they're relatively strong in a lot of aspects of the game. Meanwhile, at the top 10 of the list also included both Dostal at 4th and Gibson at 6th with Thompson and Helly at 1 and 2. The positive thing with Binnington in the 4nations finals was making those key saves especially during OT. I don't think I could remotely trust Skinner the same way with his performance this season. It's been too often where he lets in weak stinkers when we're ahead or causes the team to chase the game. It gets tiresome to watch. His lateral movement in particular has been so poor that it feels like he's on a dial up internet speed when the puck is going to the net.
But yeah, I'd upgrade on Pickard regardless. Skinner is Jekyll and Hyde. When he plays hot, he's on fire. But when he plays bad, it turns into utter dog shit. The team needs a 1A to compete and help hold the net when Skinner fails to do so. Pickard can't do that and his record against good teams shows that also. I do like Pickard as a fan and appreciated him holding the net in last year series against the nucks, but for a team like us that's in this situation now currently, there's no room for Pickard to be a potential maybe again when there's better options like Gibson, Vejmelka, Binnington, Lyon, etc imo. And that's also him having just as bad of a season as Skinner but only getting these minor recognitions without people realizing he's been sheltered heavily by majorly playing against the bad teams in the league. That won't happen in the playoffs. Neither of our goalies are good enough to hold the fort against the MacKinnon, Makar, Stone, Eichel, etc of the worlds like @Soundwave stated earlier today in this thread.
Meanwhile here's Skinner's record. Just way too Jekyll and Hyde. Can't have that inconsistency again in this year's playoffs. Especially for a team in the Oilers that has been strong in a lot of metrics compared to most teams in the league outside of goaltending. Get a 1A to replace Pickard. That's the best answer in net IMO

This wouldn't really surprise me. As I commented when Saravalli came out so strongly that the Oilers might be in a dollar in, dollar out situation with a prospective Kane return before the regular season, this smelled of likely intel direct from the player's agent and/or player himself. It sounded like a purposeful leak to serve an agenda. The logical agenda is a player doing everything possible to get back to help his team and communicating that optimism. But with trade status changing March 1 it could be a negotiating ploy to ensure the player isn't at risk to be dealt (deadline or off-season); maybe even a squeeze to explore extension. The player is within his rights to do everything possible to heal and come back from injury.
Kane is not a simple, compliant player type who's going to just accept missing the season. He's got alot at stake financially and professionally in chasing a Cup. That's both bad and good for this team that's blown its money on bad summer bets with a risky high wire supposed contingency plan to accrue cap hit to address roster needs on a team likely worse than the one that played to Game 7 Cup Final. Bowman's big bet is in a precarious situation.
The whole "Corey Crawford was just a meh average goalie the Hawks carried to a Cup, so basically the same as Stu Skinner" is also a BS narrative the Edmonton media is trying to spin.
Crawford was an outstanding .932 and .924 in the two Cups he won in Chicago, that's nothing at all like the Oilers carrying Skinner's .901 ass to a game 7 SCF. In the regular season, Crawford had 8 seasons of .917 or better goaltending before retiring at a somewhat young-ish age of 35 due to injuries.

I'm sure Kane will play ball, he's apparently just started skating at 60% pace, so probably 3-4 weeks to get his conditioning up, then atleast a week of practice with contact, and on top of that we can presumably AHL conditioning stint him. So the early timeline would be playing in the last 5-6 games of the season, I don't see much reason for him to force the issue, when it harms the teams ability to compete and he's already getting paid his full salary.
We can also do some shenanigans on our end, use the old Eakins technique of forcing them to meet prior conditioning benchmarks according to training camp testing levels, prior to green lighting him, the medical staff also has some say in slow rolling things at multiple junctures along the way, just mildly delaying check-ups and talking about wanting to be extra cautious cause of the multiple surgeries you should be able to easily stretch another 1-2 weeks out of the process.

He was also very consistent. I like the quality start metric as a measure of consistency. Skinner this year is at .526 which means that he has a league average or better sv% in about half of his games. Skinner's best year was last year at .614. There is a complementary stat called really bad start. These are games with a save percentage below .850. That means the team is unlikely to win without outscoring the issue. This year roughly 1 in 4 of his games have been really bad starts.
Over his career Crawford had 6 of his 10 seasons with QS% above Skinner's best peaking at .690. He also had really bad starts in roughly 1 in 9 games. If Skinner was statistically as consistent as Crawford during his cup years, the Oilers would be a prohibitive favourite because they seldom lose games where the goaltending is strong.
The question is then if the Oilers won game seven last year, would that change your mind on Skinner if things were still the same currently this season?
Skinner wasn’t perfect in game seven, but was decent and gave them a good chance to win. He also had good stats in games 5, 6, and 7 of every series so he can do well under pressure. Everyone knocks on Skinner for the Canucks series, yet they over look Bob's games 4, 5, and 6 in the final.
The thing is this is like +/- as a stat it doesn’t paint the complete picture when the goalie isn’t the only player on the team. And he’s stuck with efforts like the last two games in front of him. This season’s team is bad for leaving their goalies out to dry, when they give up chances it’s always to the wrong player at the wrong time.

There is no such thing as the complete picture stat but there is a big difference between +/- and something like QS%. The latter is far less dependent on the team or the players that a guy plays with.
