If Kane is out until the playoffs, we basically have his full cap hit available at the deadline.

They could run a 21 man roster instead and then have some extra money depending on who you send down.
So running a 21 man roster would mean that out of Kappanen, Perry, Stetcher, Savoie only two could stay up? (Assuming we add a depth D and a forward)

I posted it over in the PGT, but the Oilers have gotten -0.90 GSAA/60 goaltending against the top two teams in every division this season.

That is "take the worst goalie in the league and make him 15% worse" levels of goaltending.

It's utterly awful. I thought our defense in the beginning of the season would be questionable, but they've held their heads above the water, and I credit the f*** out of Coffey especially for doing that with this defensive core.

I don't think any Oilers fan in their right mind will say having another goalie will suddenly solve everything wrong with the team, but surely a new goalie would just be good in net and won't cause the team to chase the game or have a deflated goal against which crushes the energy of the team and fans alike.

So how does this explain the Oilers record?

They have the best player since Mario and their second best player is having an MVP season. Oh and Knoblaugh and Coffey actually have some kind of defensive system whereas Woodcroft had basically none (lol).

End of story. The rest of the team isn't doing a whole lot of anything special.

They've been primarily shafted by poor goaltending.

And also before breaking out the champange, the Oilers were no.1 in the division for like a whopping 2 weeks maybe of the entire season and then responded by shitting the bed coming out of the break when every player on this team should've been doing a gut check and saying "Connor is gonna be tired from the 4 Nations, it's up to us to carry the load a little more the next few games".

Laugh Out f***ing Loud to that happening.

LMAO.

Colorado has the Hart runner and a Norris dman and had one of the best wingers in the NHL. The rest of the team wasn't doing anything

Now that is a team that was getting shafted by goaltending

The Oilers certainly are not.

I’ve seen some online say they think if Skinner is traded he will go on to play well elsewhere like Dubnyk

Note that Dubnyk played under some of the worst Oilers teams of all time, and one of the worst coaches of the post lockout era

Skinner is playing for a team chasing the cup I don’t think they are comparable
The thing is though, Dubnyk just wasn’t traded away and became awesome overnight.

He was traded to Nashville where Mitch Korn saw so many flaws in his fundamentals, he said I can’t fix him. Nashville flipped him to Montreal and he rode the bus for the Bulldogs the rest of the season.

Nobody offered him a contract until Arizona gave him league minimum. He took it upon himself to better his game or be out of the league. He took some head trajectory course, worked on his fundamentals (basically reinventing his game) then became a good goalie in AZ and for Minnesota, where he played a long time and was a legitimate starter.

The Oilers should have beat Florida in 5-6 games easy. Barkov and Tkachuk are not close to being McDavid's peers.

We have cost ourselves probably 1-2 Cups already in this McDavid era because the management does not want to take goaltending seriously and is trying to win with the shittiest tandem since the Red Wings tried to win a Cup with Manny Legace in 2006 (how'd that turn out).

Colorado got one but that team was far better built than this one is, that team had about 6-7 forwards all having career years at the same time and Makar is 5x the player Bouchard is overall. One guy is a skating slapshot and a turnover machine, Makar is a game changing, game breaking player who can make magic happen with the puck. That was a master class in team building, call me when a GM here puts in that kind of work that Sakic did to build that team (Kadri trade = highway robbery, Toews trade = highway robbery, Manson acquistion = terrific, Nichushkin buy low = slam dunk, Lekhonen acquisition = terrific, Burakovsky trade = very good etc. etc.).

That and he went to an absolutely elite shot suppression team.

His goals saved above expected per 60 in the three years after the cinderella Vezina run was 0.19. That would put him at 25th in the NHL this year.

Not if they are professionals.
Players dont decide not play a system because the goalie is struggling.

As I have said previously...if this team did have an all star goalie it would only temporarily mask other issues.

Anyone that thinks goaltending is going to solve everything is going to be very disapppointed.
Other things need to change as well.

For example...I dont even like the way this team is built. They gave up speed (and some size in Holloway) and committed to players that make them older a little smaller and slower.

That IMO will be an issue when the big boy (and tighter defensive) hockey starts in the spring.
Offensive chances will be less and the fight for puck possession and creating open ice with body position (against big body teams) are not strengths of this team the way it is currently built.
I agree with the bolded. Goalies are Voodoo and who really knows if we add one how they will play. Giving Mcdavid and Drai no top 6 wingers to play with is absolutely idiotic. We are an offensive team and we need to be built to play to our strengths.

I disagree that the goaltending is not affecting the team though. These guys have played hockey their whole lives, they aren't numb to what's happening. Look at how Mcdavid praised Binnington. He's never talked like that regarding Skinner. It 100 percent has to be mentally draining for the players on the team to deal with.

The offseason was such a mess and we are WAY slower. I feel like we have to work so hard to be able to keep up out there. We can judge after the TDL

I can't agree with the Oilers D being one of the worst in the league after checking the stats. Forwards do look lost defensively at times for sure, but both can be helped by having a proper goalie in net.

Also very bad of our goalies.

Again, one can argue McDavid is part of the defensive problem along with Dmen who are usually on at the same time as him (mainly a shot at Bouchard but Ekholm looks lost now too)

McDavid will likely finish the season and minus player despite scoring 110+pts

I love these stat morons. Take 2 stats and combine them to create a narrative then leave out the most important part. Basically stats as a whole nowadays

I mean even without the stats provided, can you really honestly say that the goaltending has been good on the Oilers this year, brother?

I know you and I had our advanced stats talks way back ago in regards to Puljujarvi, but the goaltending this time is a waaaaay different story.

Yeah he's a real moron. He just proved that while McDavid is on the ice, he can't rely on his goalie to bail him out.
Is that surprising though? McDavid is a fun player on both ends of the ice. Stacking that top line is sometimes a double edged sword.

Having a goalie that can make the saves would help as a start. Neither Skinner or Pickard have been able to do so. They're the last person to cover the net and should be able to relied upon for it. But when we have Pickard who gave a weak wrister flyball 2-1 goal with no net opposition presence or anything from Chychrun yesterday, then well.. not even Patrice Bergeron himself would be able to do anything to stop that goal lol.

Name a goalie that came it at a deadline and turned the team around?

You do realize that goalies typically perform worse their 1st year on a new team?

Expecting a TDL acquisition goalie to become a game changer is HIGHLY unlikely
Roloson is a pretty good example off the top of my head but I’m sure if I researched I could find more

wHY iS mCDaVId NoT buSTinG hIS asS?

lol, I mean this what now? Year 5 or 6 of this same shit of wishy washy embarrassing goaltending.

It takes a toll on a player. Leon has his motivation this regular season to prove he's worth the highest paid contract in the NHL, Connor has nothing to prove regular season wise to anyone but it must get tiring to put up with this dog shit.
