Make a big trade with the Sabres, get bigger and change the look in goal.

To BUF: Stuart Skinner, Arvidsson, Kapanen, Akey and a 2027 1st

To EDM: Lukkonen, Greenway (50% retained), Lafferty and Brett Murray (minors)

It's a lot to give up, but the Oilers get bigger and deeper in the bottom-9 and get a different goaltender.

Yet another reason why the tournament was a complete waste of time.
I ended up liking it. Beating the Americans after how cocky they got from winning in the round robin or having you know who down there and others echoing and yapping about us being the 51st state was f***ing annoying to hear. McDavid scoring the golden goal was the cream of the crop. Definition of Crosby passing the torch.

Maybe hot take: The 4Nations tournament only got as big as it did because USA won the first game against Canada.

That's what got the hype going down South.
Ehhh, I would say it’s more so of fans and players both being starved from anything related to international hockey that matches or lines up to the Olympics. Absolutely f***ing shameful of the NHL and especially Bettman that it took this long of a decade for anything that was like this 4nations tournament but also McDavid being on the same team in an international setting with Sidney Crosby on team Canada.

I do think we should go after Bennett in the off season. He could be another Hyman for this team.
Would love him on our team as well, but he will be one of the biggest overpays in this coming Free-Agent season in both $$ and term. He'll be getting 6.5-7M long term.
Don't think it works unless we plan on decimating other areas of need.

Bowman does need to justify a reason for being here, ultimately. Theres 99 reasons why he shouldnt be already. I personally dont see any problem with firing him in the first year if he cant deliver at the TDL.

I'm not overly concerned.

Kane's knee surgery had a 6+ week recovery.... they haven't said what it was, but the recovery time rules out any catastrophic injuries (ACL, MCL, etc)... which implies it was a maintenance surgery (like cartilage).

Which implies there was no real reason for them to wait until near the end of his groin/hernia/hip flexor recovery timeline.

Which implies he was on board with extending his return timeline by scheduling the knee surgery in sequence.

His posts are likely window dressing to demonstrate he's doing all he can to be back.
I think the chances that Kane is out until the playoffs are very good. He had an unreal amount of things done for a hockey player. I've called it the Frankenstein treatment. My post was more about who holds the cards. That said Kane does walk to the beat of his own drummer so we can't know for sure at this point.

I'm with you... and he does dance to a different beat.

I'm just saying, that when I wind myself up about it, I am reminded that he
1) didn't go under the knife until September in the first place (could have been summer), and
2) chose to have a routine knee surgery AFTER he was well on the way to recovering the other injuries (could have been in parallel rather than in series).

That tells me there was (and is) a plan in place.

Listen at the 44minute mark. Seravellie interviewed Bowman for his Frankly Speaking podcast that drops Wednesday.

Frank referenced that pod, and that he emphatically asked if the Oilers are going to be getting a goalie at the TDL, “and he said No.”

For what it’s worth…

If that's the case, we're fukked.

What hype? I was in Florida the entire time and didn't see anything for coverage at all. I was in a restaurant during the final game, sitting in the bar side, and the game was on one of the TVs (out of 3 TVs, the other 2 showing a NBA or NCAA BB game I think). There wasn't a single person watching it that I could see (I even pointed this fact out to my wife). Maybe there was hype elsewhere, but I certainly didn't experience it.

If this weekend didn't convince you that the Oilers need a goaltending upgrade, I dont know what will.

7 against the Caps on 4.5 expected
6 against the Flyers on 3.86 expected

They weren't masterpieces defensively by any definition but it was still horrid
"weren't masterpieces defensively" is a severe understatement. They were an absolute tire fire defensively, trainwreck is actually a better phrase. The Oilers have completely lost the plot not just the last two games but the last 10 games or so defensively with Bouchard being the biggest offender (I don't know what happened to the Bouchard of last year but he's completely non-existent now).

The goaltending has also been poor without a doubt but we can't use the phrase that the Oilers are one of the best defensive teams in the league and are being completely sunk by goaltending anymore because they've been a complete disaster defensively for a while now.
In other words, goaltending is an issue of course as it's been all season but now the team as a whole has been a major issue and they better right this ship quickly, and I think they will, because this is looking every bit of a one and done team in the playoffs right now.

I wouldn't read a damn thing into the games over the weekend. Overreacting to a tiny sample of terrible hockey is how teams get themselves into trouble.

Fortunately for your argument we have a whole season+ sample of evidence that we need to bring in a goalie.
The Oilers were terrible before the break too ftr.

Doesn't mean that the goaltending hasn't been a season long issue but the team has been terrible for a long stretch now.

It really is F-ING CRAZY how obvious the main problem is for the Oilers, yet all the local media guys just don't see it.
I think they have their marching orders too. Come to think of it, I can’t recall a time ever where anyone from the Edmonton MSN ever hit on the goaltending. It’s like a taboo subject which cannot be singled out even when it’s blatantly obvious.

Hopefully this is just Bowman playing his cards close to the chest to not rattle the psyche of both goalies right now, especially Skinner. I’m sure there’s a few of us on this board who was a new dad and then all of a sudden there’s gossip of someone from your department at work potentially being forced transferred to another city but your boss is saying it’s just gossip and we’re not looking to make changes. It makes things pretty stressful.

But that said, get a better goalie.

It’s more so of their condescending attitude towards the fanbase which annoys me further. I’m not saying every Oiler fan including myself are always the brightest or smartest, but I would easily say I would never say shit like Chris Tanev isn’t an upgrade over Cody Ceci or that there’s no visible backup or 1B upgrades over Calvin fricken Pickard or Stuart Skinner. Eye test and advanced stats both show our goalies have been the weakest link. It’s only the media bootlickers who continue to regularly talk down to the fanbase acting like they know better when they clearly don’t.

Any defence is a superlative.

"Oh but it was screened! Ovechkin shot it and he's the best scorer ever! But someone made a mistake before!" Just Pejorative Slur level of analysis.

Better chance with a Stanley Cup winning goalie who can still clearly make big saves in big games! We know the Oilers can get back to playing better D, with a good goalie their chances would go up for sure.

I mean sure, he can also give up softies like the best of them.
Stick with Skinner and I'm thinking out in the first or second round.
Sure, just like last year.

Maybe another new rant will come up soon from Bob like this one which got the Oilers previous management to previously trade for a player in Ekholm when both the team and fanbase were rather burnt out while waiting for Ken Holland to make a f***ing good trade. This time, Bob should rant in order for the Oilers to trade for a better goalie.

haha. Your whining and premature panic was epic that trade deadline.

I was wondering why no one has suggested Sorokin.

Then I saw his contract, how the extension is in year 1 and the staggering cap hit to go with it.

Sure, and they won't face judgment until we all see what happens.

Not super impressed that we're in here resorting to hoping that management is just gaslighting us with all of their quotes though.
They’re not going to lay out their plans. No GM does.

I’m going to need you to stop making trade proposals Jimmi.

Here’s my question, do we think the shit goaltending is affecting the way the forwards and d are playing?
