Yup, that's why I think it would be impossible to do.

They'll have to open cap up elsewhere. Both Nuge & Hyman have NMCs so will depend on them

Why would that be? Most players haven't had the Oilers on their list for a few years now. You get the odd american who doesn't want to leave Trump-land, but that certainly isn't the case usually for Scandinavian players.

I bet we'd be surprised how many players who have no trade lists with ALL the Canadian teams on them. It's a combination of things...
-having to cross the border way more often than American teams do, dealing with customs, and way more travel, especially for the 4 west Canadian teams.
-for the most part, the worst weather, compared to the American teams.
-more media, more attention, more criticism, more crazy fans.
-even things as small, but kind of annoying having to have 2 types of currency with you, more often than American teams.


that being said, there are plenty of reasons to want to play in Canada, the fans, the love of the game, the passion, it's a beautiful country, less crime, less people, less traffic (other than Toronto for sure). I think there is a large group of guys that just think it would be a bit more of hassle to play in Canada.

They should re-call Savoie and play him in the top-6, or at least the top-9, bump Nuge down to 3C and try to play games without Janmark in the line up.

Jones - Henrique - Perry
Janmark, Kapanen

See what this group can do before Frederick comes back. Savoie can play on the PK.

There were a handful of steps that we could have taken in my post from last night. It would have been super complex but it was possible.

Agree on Marner for certain. Their pursuit of Rantanen shows that this is a team-model they are very comfortable with. I just don't see him leaving Toronto. Like, why would he? Toronto is just as much of a stanley cup threat that the Oilers are, and he has played his entire career there. He is also from southern Ontario as well, so would have family etc in the area. I'd be very surprised to see him leave TO.

I think there's a decent chance that they may have hurt the relationship by suggesting they'd prefer Rantanen.

If the two sides were so enamored with one another, you'd think that the deal would be signed. I just think that Matthews' number at $13.25m sets the bar of where the top is in Toronto. And if they don't see him as a similar player, there's a good chance they don't get to a number where they can repair it.

I also think there are only so many Stanley Cup contenders. And even fewer contenders with the cap flexibility to compete for his services. McDavid in his ear might have him hearing Bowman out.

Bowman talked about the Rantanen trade. He didn't say it by name but it was obvious.

He said there was a trade that didn't get done because the other team wanted more than just futures. So in other words we didn't have a Stankhoven to give. We were never going to offer Bouchard.

Just logically, isn't it madness for a forward-heavy team to trade to top pairing D for yet another high AAV forward?

Yeah, I'm not 100% certain that Bouchard would've been part of that immediate Rantanen return. Carolina seems like they were dead set on adding futures. But looking forward into next season's cap picture, something would've had to give.

I just don't see the successful way of paring down an aging roster if you're having to pay to get and then pay to get rid of unwanted salary. There's only so much trade capital you get and we're already out our 1st two seasons ahead.

Well, one way to do that is to sign free agents in their late 20s that don't cost you any assets, and using the assets you do have to get out of bad contracts. Not sure it's gonna work, but with the cap going up, it might be a reasonable strategy for extending the window without a couple of drop off years.

How is Toronto as much of a Stanley cup threat? It’s not even close. Torontos playoff success isn’t even in the same realm as the Oilers.

I think any hockey person would put Toronto in the "cup contender" category for certain. Yes, they haven't had playoff success yet really, but would you be shocked if they made the conference finals this year? I wouldn't be at all.
