Virtanen is essentially a younger Kassian... turn back the clock to before the Oilers got Kassian... and that's pretty much the situation Virtanen is in now as well (similar age and playing style as well). Both are/were fairly highly regarded 1st round picks as well in their draft years that never played up to expectations.
IIRC Kassian had addiction issues, Virtanen has.. 'other' issues

if they're gonna sign a guy with issues, at least have him be a good hockey player. there are so many better players out there than Virtanen

Great backhand as well. Better than puljujärvi to finnish it. Good middle 6er.
Hyman Leon Virtanen maybe?
I think you bring Virtanen to camp on a PTO trying to fill 4th line RW with size, grit and skating. IF he proves out over time there's possibility of moving to 3RW to add these elements still in need by this team.

The impressive raw tools are there. The question is between this player's ears whether he will put the work in required unlike all of his developmental pre-pro years when Virtanen could coast on raw ability and size. Second aspect if whether the emotional maturity is there following his 'existential crisis' of poor off-ice decision making, selfish behaviour, and criminal charge.

The opportunity is narrowly defined as an end-of-roster energy player. If he passes that threshold without incident maybe there's a chance for a Kassian-type reset career.

Wow, people on the mains are - more or less - positive about the Murray signing. Someone even called it smart. I am not accustomed to seeing such reactions regarding moves by our Oilers. Has me liking the signing.

edit: As I pointed out on the mains, I still wish the Oilers would find a little more truculence for the back end.
Sarcastic likes are a thing. I'm sure more of those posters would like us dialing in on healthy scratches and oft injured players. Its not like they're cheering for our success.

I'm starting to think McLeod isn't signed because they pretty much have to wait until Day 2 of the season to add him.

Mouser over on the business board confirmed Holloway and Broberg will basically have to be on the opening night roster because of performance bonuses. They can be sent down after though.

Without something drastic like a Foegele trade, they don't really have to roster spots/cap space for both Holloway and McLeod on Day 1, so I'd guess Holloway is on the roster Day 1, is sent down on Day 2 and McLeod is signed on Day 2.

Are you factoring in Bouchard bonuses as well?

I just don’t see how it works to get under the cap with bonuses included and have all three of Holloway, Broberg and Bouchard on the roster.

Even at a 20 player roster with Ryan and Foegele in the minors and McLeod still unsigned (10f, 8d, 2g) the Oilers wouldn’t be able to get 2.2m under the cap to account for the bonuses.

Maybe they ultimately just resign themselves to Holloway and Broberg being in the minors for the entire season pending someone else being added to LTIR?

Whatever the Oilers solution is, let’s just hope they really have someone who knows what they are doing when it comes to the cap lol.

They are in LTI, which means that there's a bonus pool that has to be accounted for. If they're not on the day one roster, their entire cap hit including bonuses needs to be available to call them up midseason. If they are on the active roster day one, those bonuses, if reached, can be transferred to next season's payroll.

They also only need to clear their immediate salaries and not the additional performance bonuses to have them on the day one roster.

So we don't actually need to have the bonus space? They just need to be on day one roster? okay that makes a bit more sense... maybe?

Ok, someone has to say it given all the smoke the past few weeks….my vote is dump Foegel and Pulju on Chicago for 2024 1st, a second some year, and the readership’s collective vote on a prospect for….wait for it….Kane!!!!

No reason for anyone to complain about shoring up defence now that we signed Murray and if that fails, bring up on one of the lads from Bakersfield. This is it, go all in.

I’m only half serious but also half facetious. So, really those both cancel each other out.

My $0.02.
(But seriously, imagine that top line…..we can outscore any and all defensive woes).

Out of curiosity... can Ryan McLeod be offersheeted by another team?

Not saying it's a likely possibility but if a team throws him an offer sheet of say $2.1 million (compensation would be a 3rd round pick)... it would be tough for the Oilers to match that offer seeing how tight against the cap limit they are.

An offersheet to McLeod by a team in a rebuilding phase looking for decent young talent ie Anaheim/Buffalo/Chicago/Detroit/Arizona would be a pretty decent strategy for those teams as they have cap space and the Oilers don't.
Thing is teams like that generally have their Ryan McLeod types that they want to give ice time to.

Exactly... and it will be for 2 or three years, not 1.

Yep. A player like Ryan McLeod has never received an offer sheet before.

I don’t imagine you’d have many teams in the league lining up to trade a 3rd rounder for him let alone also tying him up to a $2.1m contract.

I'm assuming he means Slewbban.

Every time I watched the Penguins the last couple years I thought he was good.
He said that he might be signing a PTO with the Oilers or something

Seems wild that he hasn’t gotten a guaranteed contract for more (especially since the slewfoot specialist that can’t play hot $1.5M this late in free agency)
