He can't improve the defence? The goal shouldn't be standing pat and hoping to make the playoffs.

I'm not saying going all in and buy UFA's but surely we have assets that we can trade to improve this team.
I specifically said “rentals”, if there’s a trade out there for a defenceman with term or team control then by all means. If you can offload a Kassian, Barrie, Archibald for cap relief or a hockey trade then I’m all for it but dropping prospects/picks for an upcoming UFA seems pointless Given the state of the goaltending.

His versatility is wasted here though. They don't need a center to play up the lineup and he'll never see the PP. You're going to be paying big assets to get him and big money to keep him and then either move him away from his natural position or play him at #4C and have him PK.

It's a good idea to find Kane's replacement now, but you're better off doing that by finding an actual winger.
He's a multi-positional forward.

Looking at the team's cap situation next season, it's pretty likely we'll be seeing RNH back in the top six close to full time barring the unlikely event one of the rookies turns out to be an immediate success.

So I don't really see the depth you're seeing. When has having too many centers ever been a bad thing?

Oh yeah I agree.

I guess I'm just irritated because other teams find ways to get better and all I hear are excuses while the Oilers stand pat.

I dont get why Edmonton cant trade away picks and prospects for guys with term?

Having centers at wing is great as long as you're not paying the center premium to get them and then paying them center money.

I don't really see the need to bump RNH to wing next year either. Losing Kane isn't going to drastically change things enough to go away from one of their main strengths.

I get that but he needs to figure it out.

90% of the GM's work comes down to 3 days - Trade Deadline, Draft & Free Agency. Kenny is making $5M a season and should be able to do something to improve our team.
As stated, Kane is a big addition, arguably the biggest one any team has made thus far.
I know everybody likes to get on Holland for his mistakes, and the goalie one is a big one, but he rarely gets credit for bringing in Kane and people are not counting that as a big addition for some reason. Whether or not it happened near the deadline is irrelevant.

Kane was a great move and helped add some depth up front. Im not asking for another forward. Having said that, adding Kane does nothing if we dont address the rest of the roster. It doesn't excuse Holland for leaving the defence and goaltending the same.

I agree, i'm just saying that people are acting like Holland has done nothing but sit on his hands. I'm just saying that he brought in a legit 1st line forward without giving up an asset, that's a pretty big deal. Kind of ironic me saying this considering my avatar haha.

In any event, it's hard to imagine this team making a real playoff run with the goaltending they have, which he's had almost 3 years to address, so it doesn't matter what else he does because that alone will likely sink them.

How many teams were really in on Kane though, given his off ice shenanigans ?

That was a nice get and good on Holland but let’s not compare it to beating out a bunch of other teams to acquire someone highly coveted in crunch time before the deadline.

It doesn't matter how it gets done. It's an addition all the same, he actually wine and dined Kane and did an extensive background search so he worked to get it done. I'm not a Holland fan but some people on this board tend to discredit his good moves and highlight the bad ones.

I love Paul but I dont see where he fits in the lineup. We are already using RNH as our 3rd line center.

All I’m saying is that we can give Holland some credit, but let’s not get carried away. I bet he wouldn’t have done anything if the team wasn’t absolutely floundering and there wasn’t an insane amount of pressure on him to try and rectify his own mess.

It’s even better that it happened earlier, can’t even imagine the cost to get him at the TDL in this market.

The goalie thing is what it is right now, but I’d like to see a shut down D added. Holloway can be the other forward add

I wish we had the cap space to make a play for Debrincat. Should have been the team to draft him in the first place.

If Chicago is rebuilding, there is a higher chance we could move salary to them along with futures and prospects for the brin cat. Something to look for.
