Draft Round 3 #90: New York Rangers Select D Drew Fortescue (USNTDP)

Let me tell you something about where Drew is from.

Pearl River NY. About 5-10 min from where I live on the border of Northern NJ. Super tight community. They go into his upbringing and touch on that in the Athletic feature on him. It’s no surprise that 40 of his family and friends went up to Canada to support him.

Heavy Irish population, big families going back generations. Not a huge town but well over a dozen Irish pubs and restaurants dotting Central and Main. Some kick ass breweries. All worth a visit.

The Saint Patrick's Day Parade is unlike any small towns' in the US. We go every year and its a sick event. It's up there with Boston and NYC and I'm being completely serious. People train in from Hoboken, Jersey City, etc. instead of going into Manhattan.

Its amazing that he got drafted by the Rangers and Pearl River is literally 15 min over the Tap to the practice facility. Isn't more of a hometown kid than him. Rooting for him hard and if he keeps this up he will be donning Ranger blue in MSG before we know it.

Blue Hill used to be a beautiful golf course.

Colby Cohen says Drew Fortesque was targeted in trades, but Chris Drury didn't bite. Thinks he could play with Adam Fox in a couple of seasons.
Yeah I think someone reported Vancouver wanted him originally but Drury wouldn't do it and Mancini ended up moving instead.

Fortescue is 6'2. The weight that we're seeing him listed is always somewhere between 175 and 185. I suspect it's a little higher than that. But a 6'2 guy who plays a stay at home phsyical style is going to need to be in the 190's anyway for AHL/NHL because you're going to be constantly battered over 70/80 games instead of 35/40. So for me it might be a size/strength decision for the Rangers to sign him now or not. I will say he doesn't look small or too skinny and I do think there's some chance that he will sign but my guess is he will do one more year at BC.

There is a 99% chance that I have drunkenly shambled past you like a gorilla at the Pearl River St Patrick’s Day Parade. Small world.

I do some business for work with Fortescue's uncle. Really good guy. I believe Drury's kids played hockey in the area with Fortescue. Id like to see him signed and in the organization soon.

Im cool with what ever he decides to do.

He gets plenty of reps at BC and that won’t change but I almost feel like he’d be better served somewhere else and I think he could go to Hartford and be fine as well.

Ryan Lindgren came out after his sophomore season and many thought it was too early (myself included) but he played about 65 games in the AHL the following season and then was a NHLer after that. I think Fortescue is a bit more naturally talented than Lindgren was so it's possible we see him on a similar trajectory. Both him and Dorrington are bright lights on the defensive side

If we can add a PP dman along with Fortescue and Dorrington to the Hartford defense, the team could be much improved next season.

I wouldn't be surprised if he finds a little more offense at the next level. He's got good offensive instincts, in my opinion, and hasn't really been able to use them much. BC's defensemen just aren't very involved in the offense. Powell led the team in points and only had 20.
