I am not making a value judgment about the picks themselves, just that idea that "this guy would have been available two rounds later so why not wait." Why would they. If these are the guys, then these are the guys, regardless of round, or what the consensus picks are or general ideas about BPA. The thinking might be off here, time will tell on some of them, but there seems to be little point in crying that they should have waited till X round to grab that guy if there was not a player they wanted more available.
I guess I had two points to what I was saying.
1. That the scouting report rankings seems to be a better judge of players than the Bruins staff has done
2. The players that they "wanted" and got that worked out, are the ones on the chopping block. The few we have to actually work with, too.

Anyways, I guess we can wait and see. I'm sure the time this kid plays is going to be post Bergeron/Krejci Bruins, so who knows how the team is gonna look then.

Unless they are going to trade a few LD, I don't know why they didn't draft a forward with this pick. I guess we'll see how it goes.

You know, i've been thinking - there must be a way to see if a scouting staff is preforming above replacement levels.

Take the draft rankings by all publications, make a comprhensive rankings, and compare the team's draft picks VS the ranking to see which scouts are doing better than the publications.

My guess, the draft magazines are probably better in rounds 1/2 and good scouts show their value in the later rounds.

Think the Bruins would hire one of the magazine's scouts to at least consult their round 1/2?

if thats true wouldnt a prudent gm ignore his scouts in the first 2 Rounds and then let them speak after?

from the Globe:

EliteProspects analyst J.D. Burke, scouting Lohrei during a February game against Omaha, said Lohrei “has a tendency to wander in and out of play at his leisure, and an inability to dictate the shape of board battles in spite of a relatively strong skating stride and imposing [size] ... He doesn’t close with speed; he encroaches like a boat coming to port.”
However, Lohrei’s puck-carrying skills, in small spaces in particular, stand out. He has a “snappy” wrister that suggests a strong upper body.
Draftnik Steve Kournianos was much higher on Lohrei. Kournianos called him a “smothering two-way defenseman” with “ice water in his veins” when handling the puck or stopping the rush. “Beating back a forecheck is more science than art,” Kournianos wrote, “and Lohrei executes them at a doctorate level.” As a USHL overager, he tied for the league lead among defensemen in assists (27).
Lohrei, who is committed to Ohio State for the 2021-22 season, is listed at 201 pounds. He put up eight goals and 29 assists in 48 games last season, his first full year in the USHL. A native of Verona, Wis., who is reportedly originally from Baton Rouge, La., he attended Culver (Indiana) Military Academy during high school.

Sounds like a rougher version of Brandon Carlo.

Yeah I think I misunderstood what you were saying. Yes, they have not to this point seemed to have done super well with their "off the board" selections. The ones on the chopping block- it amounts to the same thing, but basically these are the guys that have value as trade assets.

Reading the scouting reports, it's tough not to be at least a little intrigued by the idea of locking this kid in a weight room at tOSU for a couple of years and seeing if he can emerge as a 6-4, 225-pound defenseman who can carry the puck and make breakout passes.

You can argue the spot, but it definitely sounds like there's at least something to dream on.

It’s getting really old arguing the draft position every year. We could have easily grabbed him later. This shit is f***ing infuriating. They didn’t learn any lessons for their first draft here? BPA should be the mantra for this front office because they haven’t hit in a reach yet

Yeah, I'm intrigued too. He definitely should have been picked lower but some of the reports are encouraging enough.

But for me, it all comes back around to the position. I know what they say about drafting BPA and not for need, but I don't always agree. Especially with Boston's position in looking to replace Krug and potentially Chara on the pro roster ( meaning they might trade for a top 4 LD ), using high draft picks used on Vaak, Zboril, Lauzon, and signing value college free agents in Nick Wolffe and Jack Ahcan. I realize that some of these guys could potentially play RD, but I'm a stickler for left side/left handed - right side/ right handed and I think most coaches are too. I really feel the pipeline for LD was pretty well set.

Putting a lot of points in the USHL is not the same as putting a lot of points in the NHL. Jeremy Lauzon was a point-per-game player at this age in the Q, do you see him replacing Krug’s production on the Bruins?
Yea but lauzon become a serious player. That's all you can ask when hitting darts from 2nd round to 7.

Wonder if they think the 2019 draft class is that much better than the 2020 draft class so much that they would draft an overager and bypass the 2020 draft altogether.
Typically the bruins do well with their 2nd rounders when they dont have a 1st. Krecji, Gryzleck and Studnika come to mind of players they drafted with out a 1st. I just dont see the upside here especially with the pluthera of LHD prospects. Where is this kid going to play in 3 years?

What also needs to be factored in is how weird of a year it is. Scouting since February was probably different than in other years. We are gonna see some unusual stuff in the NBA draft too
all the more reason to rely on central scouting and the consensus instead of your own scouting (which has been limited)

If he's Colton Parayko (and that was a wildly off the board pick) then they look like geniuses.

If he's the 158 best player in this draft, it's a complete waste

Would you be happy if he's the 58th best player in the draft? I think we all know that anything past the first round is basically a lottery ticket. How many truly good players come out of each draft? 158 vs 58 may be a smaller gap than you think.

the thing I don't get about this pick is that typically when I think of drafting an overager, one of the benefits is you might be looking at a kid who has filled out already and is closer to the NHL. But Lohrei looks like a 6'3 12 year old. He's rail thin. Overager or not I don't see this kid playing in the NHL any time soon.

I highly doubt central scouting has more access to pertinent information than NHL teams when shits been shut down for 7-8 months
