GDT: Round 2 Game 3

He takes a pay cut and a reduced role or he goes. I think he’ll take that retirement deal and hopefully the Caps can find someone to step in his role.
I think the Caps resign him for 2 years.

While he hasn’t been good in the playoffs, he had a fantastic year. Seems to have plenty left. Agree with others that he is likely hurt, but he is not cooked IMO.

The Dee will likely look the same next year with Fever back, and Iorio as 7D (Alexyev as 8) and Mac going to Hershey. TVR and JC74 will both finish next year as UFA’s. how Iorio (and Chesley) progress will likely decide what they do with those guys. I suspect TVR will be gone and JC74 will be resigned.

I can’t see Carlson not retiring as a Cap, he’s clearly viewed as a leader and has a lot to offer. I think he is hurt, but he’s also just not a young man anymore, and they still rely on him being who he was. He’s over 35 and has played over 23 minutes a game almost every year. I think it would do wonders for him to have his minutes reduced to the 20 minute range. I don’t think he’s too proud to do that.

I think he finishes this contract, signs another two year deal and sees if he still has it after that, retires a Cap, and becomes one of the rare Caps retired numbers (I think 8-19-74 deserve it from this era)

Carlson lost his man no doubt, but Sandin turned that into a goal against by overplaying and vacating the front of the net. Complete lack of defensive awareness there on 38. A D pair totally shitting the bed.

Sandin executed the play that should happen if the draw is won. If Carlson gets there first, Sandin cuts under and they start the breakout. I maintain that it was Carlson’s responsibility to prevent this.

This was only one of two goals where his lack of foot speed was very apparent.

If it's a set play then it's flawed because the #1 responsibility for anyone on that side of the puck in the defensive zone should be to secure the puck and protect the net rather than be thinking about a breakout.

Faceoffs are all about winning possession. Winning the draw doesn't guarantee possession.

Not to lecture, just explaining why I agree with those who don't put this all on Carlson. Once he's a step behind on that play there's not much he can do that isn't a penalty. Sandin and maybe even a forward would've been in better position to deal with that puck.

The in studio guys even called out Sandin for incorrectly vacating the front of the net further exacerbating Carlson losing his guy.

Has a single play in a Caps GDT ever been over-analyzed to death the way this one has?

JFC - Carlson made a mistake. It didn't single handedly cost the Caps the game.

Surprised somebody hasn't started an entire thread about it: "Carlson loses his man, Caps book tee times"

I think Carlson is put in the same unfair position as Ovi sometimes. They both are not young anymore, play well for an entire season and then are being counted on to be big difference makers (if not the best at their position) come the playoffs. I don’t think it is fair to have that kind of responsibility at this point in their career. Just my take.
