Sorry to push back on this, especially after a win, but it's a big deal. This is shaping up to be a super-close series. We need to play actual hockey all 60 minutes, not 50 minutes and Pitching Wedge Practice for the last 10 if we're up...

I think the difference is in execution, not direction from the coaches. Its not like Carbs tells JC to make soft, weak clears right on the ice to the D on the point, and Carly says "yes sir, boss". Some of their struggles clearing the zone is due to the Canes forecheck, which is top notch.

Sure, they have plenty of room to play better than this, but its about the players effort, not some magic coaching insights at this point.

I'm gonna put another spin on this series. Canes now having a bit of a challenge scoring the 1st goal! You can't keep coming from behind in a game, which is something they did little of in 1st round against the Devils!

Love Ovechkin, he’s an absolute legend and has been a rock for Washington his whole career and all that.

That being said, between this season and in this playoffs so far I think this is already viewed as Tom Wilson’s team. It just really feels that way.

Don't remember seeing much of the 3rd line after they got hemmed in their own zone for 3 minutes in the 3rd. Only remember seeing Mango pop in once to cover for Ovi on the first line

They were too spent to take another shift, LOL.

Canes matching lines at home will be a problem for the Caps. Will be interesting to see how Coach handles it.

Too many casual elites there now because the rowdy middle class people have been priced out. I was at the first home game after 895 against Carolina. Not only was there a ceremony for ovi but it was the bloodbath rematch against Carolina and it felt like a pre season game in there.

Completely disagree. There is a total about-face in strategy that occurs. Of course he's not telling guys to underperform. And clearing the zone isn't the problem. Doing it with an exit or some semblance of control versus a Hail Mary is the issue. Completely surrendering the neutral zone on their entries is even worse. Setting up a bunker around your keeper is chickenshit. Blocking his sight lanes, creating WAY too many opportunities for unfavorable bounces...

Yes, execution is part of it, which brings us to this: Given that it's clearly a strategy and that they don't execute it well...? Why keep doing it?

Win the game between the blues, always, but especially in the postseason. Maybe you can rope-a-dope a final round with an amateur opponent. But a real fighter WILL find your chin if you do nothing but allow him to swing away.

You think rod is going to be happy if the canes laid down after being down? There's no magical "we got a one goal lead it's over" button. Trotz was famous for turtling
 
Ultimately it’s a business. Can’t hate too hard for trying to make money. Would be nice to get some rowdier folks in there but reality is people would just re-sell for top dollar. Maybe scattering the federal government across the country would help alleviate the massive amounts of wealth in the DC area.

I don't know what to tell you, but sometimes good teams that know what to do, cant do it because the other team is there too, trying hard, playing well. Hockey games go back and forth, within a shift, within a period, a game and a series. Its not like the coaching staff just tells them to do things a certain way and they automatically start doing it, you're placing way too much emphasis on how much a coach can control within a game.

Think of it this way: If it was as simple as just coaching, then the best coaches would win all the games and their teams would never struggle. But of course thats not how it goes becuase there are two teams imposing their wills at different levels throughout a game. When the Caps suck this year (happened for a few long stretches in the RS and a few games in the POs), its not because Carbs suddenly is forgetting to tell them to do the right things. Its because they're not moving their feet. The players have to play the system they know, and we know Carbs system can work here because when they execute it, they're dominant. But they cant execute it at a high level for all 60 minutes of every game. Getting hemmed in their own zone is the byproduct of them being tired, flat, or the other team just being more fired up and motivated, like you really should expect a team trailing by 1 goal late in the 3rd period to play.

Momentum is real. Its impossible to have it for all 60 minutes. This isn't a system issue, its an energy issue.
