Prospect Info: Round 1, Pick 13: Jett Luchanko, C, Guelph (OHL) - 7/6 Upd: Signed 3yr ELC

The Flyers signing Tippett to a high money eight year deal is one of the top exhibits and examples of their poor decision making. He is a completely one dimension player, whose top value is above average. You don't sign that kind of player to an 8 year deal unless that one dimensional aspect is all star level.
The Tippett extension was announced one week after his spinorama goal, one of the few times that season the building was electric. I’m certain that immediately after that goal Dani and Keith locked eyes and said let’s get it done. An albatross contract was born

Tippett - 7 years at $6,200,000
Foerster - RFA
Hathaway - 2 years at $2,400,000
Brink - 1 year at $1,500,000

I felt they should have traded TK instead of re-signing him, but I get it. If there's a guy on this team that makes sense to get a max term deal, it's TK.

Tippett, on the other hand, no. I don't dislike the player. I don't even really care about the salary that much. It's the term. To me, he's a very nice secondary piece. Not the kind you give a max deal.

Add Michkov into the RW mix, and it's crowded.

Add Martone, and it's stupid.

Not exactly what a franchise starving for talents needs from a 13th overall pick after trading back and passing on Zeev Buium.
Passing on Buium will hurt but what’s done is done. Can’t go back. Luchanko will still be a very solid piece for a long time for the Flyers - Just not an offensive core piece. He’s was not that type of player in the OHL so I doubt he will be that in the NHL.

A piece for some time, we hope.

They drafted Laughton hoping for a Richards replacement. And got a 3/4 liner. Now they drafted Luchanko to be a 3/4 liner. He falls short at all and he's an AHL player.

And every "glue" guy they've reached for has fallen short.

That’s not what I said. Luchanko’s floor is probably a decent to ok NHLer. I think he tops out as a good middle 6 C.

This is indicative of the GM's too.
Holmgren was Laughton
Briere is Luchanko.

Tk grandma was a huge flyers fan. He was always staying. No problem with him. Glad he will wear orange and black. If any deserves a contract…… it is him

Luchanko another point 5 in 5 AHL playoff games. Not sure how he looked but it’s better than if he just laid a goose egg.

Rather then looking to crap on him, I wish some perspective from some of the folks on the board would be refreshing.

Here you have a still 18 year old playing on his 3rd league in the last 9 months, more games, and not only PPG in the AHL playoffs, but looking good doing it.

Does it mean he’s a future star? Does it even mean anything for a projection? No. But being PPG is better than not, to your point.

He may not hit as a player, but there is high end talent there - even if the production hasn’t caught up yet.
