I always thought that "burning a year off the ELC" was overstated in its significance. I believe it ever more so now in the age of giving big extensions to top paying players before they hit free agency.

I agree with this overall, but for if it is for 2 games as speculated, then it is a waste IMO.
If we end up making up the playoffs, and he can practice with the team, even if he doesn't dress for the games, it'd be ok. But if we don't make it, it's not enough time in and around the squad to be useful

It’s a waste by design - whether it’s only two games or a few more in the playoffs.

He is the most hyped Rangers' pick outside of goaltenders and the top 2 that I can remember.
And we're playing wth fire doing so.

If he ends up a 65 point 2nd line playmaking winger, people are going to be apoplectic with the hype he's been given.

Hedging our expectations is never a bad plan. I've seen people swear on their lives that Christian Thomas, Kravtsov, Gropp, Grachev would all be game breaking wingers.

Perreault is well ahead of what they had accomplished at the same age, but I think the assumption he will be a superstar is premature. If he becomes Mats Zuccarello, who he has always reminded me of, that's an amazing get.

Well 65 points is a lot more than the 50 points talked about, but yeah I would still be disappointed.

Cherepanov (RIP) was hyped pretty good. It definitely would have helped out offense issues during those great years of watching Lundqvist have to win games 2-1. But who knows maybe his defense wouldn't have translated over too well since they identified that and strength as a weakness.

It's difficult to say. Given the Rangers' organizational ineptitude at developing high end forward talent (especially Russians), I was far from holding my breath.

Obviously, what happened was an absolute tragedy, and I still would have loved to see him come over and get a good look. Part of me being a Rangers fan is continually expecting them to fumble top end forward scoring talen, and habitually hoping they won't the next time the next high end forward prospect comes through the system.

I hate to be so cynical, but after 30+ years of following this team, it's really hard not to.

What you say
I mean just to be clear I wasn't saying Perreault is going to be a 50 point guy, or a superstar. I was just saying that you could stick him on a good power play and with his skills he'd pick up a bunch of points even if he couldn't do much 5v5. I wasn't commenting on what I thought he would or wouldn't be.

What we hear
I mean just to be clear I was saying Perreault is only going to be a 50 point guy max and you all can suck it

If this is your idea of “hysterical” I don’t know what to tell you.
I’ve read the thread and we are going on about Gabe’s size, which at 5’11 180 is ALREADY not an issue and he will almost certainly be playing in the NHL at 190 pounds. The dude is not “small,” he’s a bit below the NHL average. If he’s “small” probably 40% of the NHL is small... He doesn’t NEED to be stocky and in fact that might be counterproductive to his game.
If he’s going to succeed it will be on the strengths he was drafted for, his IQ, vision, hands, shot, etc, and his speed and size are not detrimental.
I just read all caps words in a hysterical voice. Like why you yelling? Actually, bold is like yelling. All caps is like the internet's version of screaming.

Ever heard of emphasis? Or that too nuanced? Read it how you like, make it fit your narrative. Doesn’t matter. My points remain the same. Kid won’t be small by NHL standards and his skating is not an impediment. I hope capitalizing NHL doesn’t trigger you. Hahaha.
Have a good one bud.

There were questions about Cherepanov's upside as well- it wasn't just the Russian factor why he dropped so far.

Scouts and reporters had described his play as not standing out in certain ways that other star Russian forwards had in past. He had the scoring record and stats and all that, but he was seen as a sort of anodyne player. He didn't have a particulatly inspiring d+1 season, and was starting to pick it up when he passed away. But I remember the best posters seeing him as a 65-70 point first line player, not necessarily the next Kovalchuk or Ovechkin.

I mean, that might have put them over the top for a cup in that window even if he wasn't a superstar...though who knows what other moves may or may not have been made if he was part of the roster
