Seems like this is consensus (for a good reason) here. When I think of a goal scorer rather than playmaker among top players - I think of someone whose goal/assist is close to 1, while playmaker is probably approaches 0.5. However, keeping assist stat to the side, if for example someone saw Panarin being able to easily score 30 goal and in his career year getting one goal shy to 50 - he should be considered a serious goal-scorer (in ADDITION to playmaker).

Agree 100%, but the one thing that I would add is that when we are looking at prospects there is an element of projectability for each of those offensive skills that has to be considered.

And Perreault's playmaking looks undeniably projectable. He's going to make his linemates more dangerous in the NHL, there should be zero doubt. Will he be able to score at a 30 goal pace though? There's certainly wiggle room for opinions there.

Seems like any prospect writer in the media that is fixating on the latter, likely just looked up his stats, seen how much he scored as part of the US National team, and formed their opinion entirely on that.

I don't know what those people are looking at, but from watching Perreault myself I'd say he's both a playmaker and a scorer. I wouldn't label him as one or the other.

BTW, he was given an assist on the EN goal in Saturday's game, as I had hoped. He's now at 2 goals and 5 assists in 4 games. Everyone ahead of him has played 5 or more games. In terms of points per game, he is 9th at 1.75.

Our boy Laba is 1st with 3 points per game, though he has only played 2 games.

Yeah. I agree playmaker AND scorer. In fact, the “weaknesses” that let him slip to us are already drying up in his D+2. Skating? He looks easily above average to me already. Size? He’s not BIG, but he certainly doesn’t play small. And he’s not near done growing. This kid is not only going to be the steal of his draft, but the biggest steal since Wyatt Johnston, who was also a 23rd pick.

I think Gabe's skillset would translate pretty well to the center position, if we wanted to try him there.

Faceoffs would be the thing he'd need to learn, but his dad was one of the best ever. I think he'd figure it out.

Even if he remains at wing, he can still play the role of puck distributor with a center who likes to shoot.

I’m not sure how this is a counter to what I said… GP is the biggest draft steal since Johnston… I’m not even predicting which one will end up the better or more valuable player. Hahaha.

Well, it’s safe to say that Cutter Gauthier believes the New York Rangers have a gem in forward prospect Gabe Perreault. The Anaheim Ducks forward gushed about his former Boston College teammate recently when speaking with The Athletic’s Peter Baugh.

“He’s sick,” Gauthier said about Perreault. “He’s got like 10 eyes on his head. He can see everything. … (He) can make plays out of his a– that I have never seen before. We played together on the power play and he made life so easy. He was feeding me pucks that not a lot of guys (were able) to.”

They gave an assist to Perreault on the ENG the other night which they didn't originally so his line is now 2-5-7 in 4 games.

Super small sample but that would give him 18-45-63 in 36 games after going 19-41-60 in 36 games last season. So if anyone worried about how he'd do without Smith or Gauthier, he's still performing at an elite level.
