Speculation: Roster/Trade Discussion Thread - WTF is up with Brett Howden?

All I see is a Weekes musing about Berard and not a lot else.

it doesn't matter. Berard is essentially worthless. We'd be lucky to get a 4th for him.
If you're set on a pick he'd get a 6th probably. AHL kid with low potential and 1 good skill or an 8th/9th dman (think Jarred Tinordi) is more likely though.

Sullivan pretty much decided at the end of training camp on Conor Sheary instead of Berard. Berard IMO had a better training camp though. So there's that. Berard didn't seem to take well to his demotion. It took him about a month to start putting up points at all in Hartford---not like too many others were either though. Berard was up for a bunch of games and did nothing and then missed the last two months of the season with injury. A lot of things went the wrong way for him last year.

FWIW last year was his first bad year since we drafted him. He is small though and projects as a bottom 6 winger and we have a lot of those and pretty much all of them are bigger than Berard. I don't think he has a lot of value nor do I think it would be a big loss if we moved him. That said there's a fairly decent chance IMO he's going to rebound and at least get back to where he was in his first two seasons. I'll insinuate this though that moving him at least to some degree points to the return of Sheary IMO and I don't think that is so hot.

Man, every time I unhide RangerBoy's posts I remember why I put him on ignore. He's just unhinged about Fox.

There are a few here that always want to trade everybody. I get the Phil Esposito/Mike Milbury vibe. Milbury is definitely a candidate for worst NHL general manager since the inception of the league. Espo probably not that far behind.

It's not that I don't think RB makes good points quite often but IMO he'd be a really bad general manager. The trade happy always are. Trades can really be helpful but you don't make a team better by dumping players left and right. Along with finding good players you also want to construct a stable environment for them to play in or things aren't going to grow.

EF said there is still a gap between the Sabres and Tuch. Still time.

Minnesota and Florida have already made their offers for Larkin.

Larkin seems to be a very sensitive guy. He is upset about the Red Wings trading Tyler Bertuzzi and his contract negotiations bothered him. The relationship fell apart when the Red Wings kept missing the playoffs. Perron and Ghost left the Wings. Not getting anyone at the trade deadline in 2025. Not getting Hughes. Yzerman didn't like how Larkin celebrated the Gold medal victory. There is no relationship.

Dave Pagnotta mentioned Tuch to Chicago. If Tuch stays, Buffalo needs to move other money to keep Benson. If Tuch leaves, Buiffalo has flexibility. I read Tage Thompson might move to wing permanently if Tuch leaves. Buffalo could be in the market for a center. Trocheck?

Larkin to Florida. The Panthers have depth at center. Yzerman isn't trading Larkin within the division. It would nice to get the Red Wings first round pick in 27 in a Trocheck deal. Dom from the Athletic wrote the Wings have a bottom five projection w/out Larkin.

Schneider and Berard to Kraken for Catton and Ottavainen a fair trade??

Rangers get more center and d help
I like the thinking, Seattle has a lot of young forwards in the prospect pool.

Miettinen was really impressive at the WJC too, his stock is well up.

Issue is that the Kraken are deeper at RD than LD. 12.5 million spet on Montour and Larsson.

You're just delusional. Why does it bother you so much? He is a hockey player for the Rangers. Nothing more. Players come and go. There has to be something which elicits such a weird response regarding Fox. What's the reason? Be honest. He is a just hockey player. What's the real reason? Just say it.

Fox made the comments about his future. Nobody put the words in his mouth. Is it wrong to speculate? This board is designed for trade speculation. Mentioning Fox is somehow "unhinged".

Marner was a home grown Leaf. Born in Ontario. Drafted by the Leafs. He got sick of the losing. Mitch left last summer. Larin is a home grown Wing. Born in Michigan. Played at the University of Michigan. Red Wings captain. He is sick of the losing. There are some issues with management. Larkin wants out.

Somehow it is wrong to mention Fox. He made those comments 2x. Vince Mercogliano who spoke to Fox at the end of the season for a story mentioned Fox wants to see Drury improve the team this summer. He initiated Fox might not be willing to stay if the team stinks again. They have already missed the playoffs the last 2 seasons. There are issues with Fox over the Olympic snub. The entire Rangers braintrust was part of the US staff.

Someone tell this moron to unblock me so he can why does it bother him so f***ing much? Thank you.

Stable environment? The franchise is a losing franchise. They are satisfied with being mid. They lack talent. Igor is keeping from being a bottom 5 team. Time to blow it up and start over.

Fox for #2, Will Smith and Chernyshov/Graf or no deal. Thats the only framework where I’m entertaining the thought. Fox has an NMC if @RangerBoy gets his wish it’s gonna be a Larkin situation where he’ll only waive for a few teams. Do we just take it on the chin and capitulate? That’s what actual loser franchises would do.

As for the emotional connection, I’m too old to have a connection to any one player. It’s the team I’m loyal too. I’ve seen too many guys come and go. It’s never the end of the world.

A team that’s content with being mid doesn’t turn over 75% of the roster from a President’s Trophy winner in 2 years. Management realized the team they had was not winning. The players and fans cried over it even though we all knew it to be true. Shouldn’t now be the time for some patience?

Drury actually already did blow it up since they went to ECF. He’s been doing it methodically and not creating a total chaos of a franchise that you want to see. Unless things change and Fox / Shesterkin / Gavrikov explicitly ask for a trade (rather than you building a weak case around their not recent frustration comments after losing a game) they are keepers and 99% agrees.

I actually think Vegas has the assets to pull this deal off, but they are a little busy right now

don't be greedy
acquire EK from Pitt [jtm + schneid + for Horcoff + EK +]
then Fox + EKarlsson
for 2OA +
then flip 2OA to Chi for 4OA +/++

first 3 pix are Fs
we start 4 + 5Oa [hopefully add in other deals]
do Reid + Carels there
adds more D
w/in 2 yrs they are all here
along w/Barnhill + others
our D no longer a current concern

NO
now is the time not for patience, but to aggressively correct the massive stupidity of mgmt not listening to bern and doing rentals, by unloading vets before they lose any more value

sorry EB, gotta disagree here

good teams CONSTANTLY LOOK to improve
they only rest when they are holding a winning hand
that is not us right now

If @RangerBoy and/or I ran things, this team would be WAY better

Berard seems to have been surpassed by Sykora in a number of ways in the eyes of Drury. There's really only one spot on a roster for a small jitterbug bottom 6 guy.

He'd require waivers so they'll probably move him for peanuts instead. It's too bad, I thought he had prime Sheary potential, but he hasn't really 'developed' in the sense of getting any better for several seasons now.

Berard feels like someone who exemplifies the negative effect the atmosphere in Hartford last season was having on players. In that sense, I'd want him to get another shot in the organization after essentially a lost season. But in reality, at his age it's gotta be NHL or bust next year. I could easily see both him and Drury feeling like he'd be better off trying to get there in another organization.

While i agree somewhat, I don't give him a pass. Sykora played on that same team and kept his chin up high and made the Rangers team and never looked back. I'm thrilled Sykora did as well as i've been a huge fan of him since we drafted him.
