Speculation: Roster/Trade Discussion Thread - WTF is up with Brett Howden?

On his podcast, Frank said there was some talk that Montreal was going to trade a pick, a prospect, and Laine for Lafreniere at the deadline.

That would have been absolutely heinous. Laf will be a PPG player with a full season of PP1 time. His contract will be a steal with the rising cap. Drury is a moron that this was even a conversation.

You literally can't trust Drury to do anything right, can you.
How the hell is a MTL lowball offer, that we apparently refused, a further indictment of Drury? He refused it. Hahahaha. Who says it was a conversation? Or what if the conversation was “Throw in Suzuki and we’ll talk”? Wild.

You can quote a million similar stats. Why do care so much about the Adam Fox? Do you think Fox cares about you? The Rangers are not a very good team. Where have the Rangers gone with this group?

I care about this f***ing stat.

The Rangers have one championship in 86 years. ONE. They are not close to winning another one anytime soon you silly person.

1940

1994

2026

One Cup in 86 years.
And Fox is the reason for that? Hahahahaha.
He’s our best player outside of goalie. He’s 28. He has a NMC till 27-28 He’s not going anywhere anytime soon unless he wants to. Which he has never indicated.

1. Lots of peeps on this board wanted us to not suck like ANA but reap benefits of drafting well to have a young team.
That took years
My way minimizes that by acquiring higher end picks more likely to succeed if not also quicker.
Of course, nobody wants to pay that price now.
Peeps who said yeah, do a rental, win now, I don't care are not honest enuf to fess up.

2. Defense. Forgot to list Clarke, who I kept in this variation
I see Fortescue as a quick study.
Clarke is established.
They can work those 2 for first pair.
Robertson, etc., fine.
THEY ARE PLACEHOLDERS for the guys we draft.

3. Cap.
Too biz to crunch #s and yours seem reasonable.
Let's say there is a 40-ish mil gap betw what I said and the cap floor, BEFORE ADJUSTMENTS, which I noted were possible.
Garand = elc; Offer him 4.5 x 4 = 20m or almost 4 per on 1 yr of salary.
40-4 =36 m gap

There are a # of guys we can extend now instead of later.
Laba, Chmel, Fortescue.
Let's say that's another 3 guys same-ish deal, net more than 3m over their elcs.
Call it 10m

that's 36-10 = 26
Now there are guys we haven't even signed to elc yet. Can go direct to a larger deal.
Roo, Aspinall, Eriksen, Barnhill, Spence
coupla mil each x 5, that's ballpark 13
26 - 13 = ballpark 13 left

Now weaponizing cap.
Setting aside a scenario where Matthews ++ gets injured in TOR, they have no chance, agree to send us Nylander for picks/futures, that is 10+ right there, 1 guy.

That's iffy/conditional on injury so we'll just call it an unlikely but outside maybe [like drawing an inside straight in poker].
we could outbid for Ras Andersson, use him 1-2 yrs as a placeholder, then sell later when the cavalry arrives possibly w/retention
That's 10+m on just 1 guy!
13-10 = 3

and there's more where that came from

and those are ufas
there are also rfas

So respectfully, the math DOES add up
You have to be creative and work, but it does add up.

4. Fan acceptance
Fans will recognize more of the same = more of the same, and capitulate to that reality, or suffer from continued status quo.

We need to replace our vets w/quality youth that is the bottom line
either it gets done piecemeal over time, or as I propose above in expedited fashion.
But THAT actually IS reality.

A lot of us called to embrace the suck to get best possible draft pick [odds].
So if the team IS a stinker, why would they not accept 1 yr of pain if it is 1-2 steps back to go 8-10 forward?

And also, this is a hungry team that would compete even if they did not walk away w/as man Ws as we would like until after growing pains are gone.

Peace out

Your vape doesn’t have formaldehyde in it, it has nothing but formaldehyde in it.

Our team is shit but have you seen Fox's expected goals above expectation? Such bullshit. Fox is really good at keeping the puck in the offensive zone. He will keep the puck in the zone 5 or 6 times out of 10 times. That will result in more shots on goal. A face-off in the offensive zone. More offensive zone time. That's it. His overall game?
“Sure he does something better than anyone else in the league that is very valuable for a defenseman to do, but so what? I DON’T LIKE HIM.” is how this reads.
Fox has a great all round game and in his worst year was still almost PPG.

Yes, I can, and I just did. Not 100% certainty, because nothing is 100% certain, but enough to make the statement.

Winning the cup is hard enough when the team is good. We just finished last in the conference. Panarin is gone, and the rest of the core is aging. We need too many things to completely turn it around and win the cup within the next 3 years, and not trading Trocheck makes that task even harder.

If we can get a mid 1st and a prospect for Trocheck, we should take it.
I agree with you, I think the time to deal Trocheck is now, this summer. Before or after the draft doesnt matter. He turn 33 in a month and who knows if he is capable of 55+ points seasons any longer. He might get injured. He knows the team has tried to trade him, what do that do to his motivation (probably not so much, he was fine the stretch after the trade deadline, but who knows?). If the best offer is Stramel and a 2027 1st I`ll take it. Just move on.

Unless Trochek is part of the return for Larkin...
I could see it. I love Trocheck and everything he brings but Larkin is a “puck lugging” center who excels at cutting through the neutral zone with the puck which is something the center core has been sorely missing since Chytil.

This Larkin news is bad for us.

Full NTC. 8.7 for the next 5 years.

This is a tough one to connect dots with. Dude is from Michigan, played at UM.

This is just Fox Derangement Syndrome at this point.

Fox is literally the only homegrown elite skater the Rangers have had since Brian Leetch. He's so far away from being any type of problem for this team and organization but he seems to be the only thing you hyper focus on. Let it go.

Willing to bet that a lot of this is Larkin applying public pressure to Yzerplan and ownership to do something rather than the bullshitting they have done in his prime years.

If Detroit were to trade for Trocheck or something I bet he quietly rescinds his very public disgruntled trade request.
