Jokiharju has been… dare I say…. actually good?

I'm going to take an L on Greenway. I wondered why they bothered taking on a reclamation project like him but now he's found his game again and man, what a necessary add he is to the Sabres FW group. Physical and defensively responsible, makes room for his linemates.

I'm also going to take a victory lap on Mittelstadt. He's probably not the 3rd best C on the team, he's one of the top two. I don't care exactly what line he plays on, he's a big improvement for the FW group as a whole. Dogged on the puck in every zone, making small area moves and passes to linemates in space that he created for them.

I hope Granato gets more starts for both Comrie and UPL. Somebody needs to go somewhere and we may as well find out who the weak link is. The way the team is playing better defensively (not so much against Calgary) it might be harder to figure out...this includes the potential of sending Levi down.

I know what most thought in the summer, and especially after adding CC and EJ, but Jokiharju has room to improve. I wish we had a good enough D-corps to make him a 3rd pair, but he's not trash. I just don't know if he can improve enough to be a #4 guy.

Felt like last night was his best game in a long, long time. One downside is that his weaknesses are similar to his usual partner's problems in terms of engagement around the net. He is nearly as lost as Power most of the time. But if they can keep that from happening with quicker exits, it isn't magnified like it is when they get forechecked hard (and the forwards aren't back far enough).

Casey Middlestadt is a DAWG

Maybe send Levi down for a "rehab stint" once he has healed.

Random thoughts:

The Sabres PP would improve drastically with P. Kane on the right side.
Tage on the left and Dahlin up top.... Love Skinner but he does nothing for the PP.
Peterka is looking super fast this year and looks like a little water bug out there.
Cozens looks like he has a nagging injury.
Erik Johnson was a fantastic add to the D.
I am concerned about Krebs, I don't see a long term fit.

I don’t see Kane making a dramatic improvement. Skinner doesnt have to be on PP or be on PP2

im concerned on EJ and back to backs. I wonder if we see him and Okposo scratched on Monday/ Tuesday for one of the games

They can send him down in paper transactions without an injury need. I’ve mentioned before they might have to rotate a 24th player between Levi, Peterka, and Krebs. Thry coukd send Krebs outright to Rochester when Savoie comes up from rehab in early November If Benson is staying.

I wonder if the maintenance days for Benson are a preview of the plan to stretch his nine game stay over the course of ~15 team games before sending him to juniors. It's starting to feel like the more likely path to me, for as good as he looks he hasn't been undeniable. Savoie comes in in two weeks and takes his spot, does the same type of paced plan until mid-December (and potentially stays). I still think our FO is going to win their appeal to keep him in the A.

I think about this sometimes, and it's why I want the Sabres to actually make things happen in the trade market.

I'm itching for a consolidation trade myself, but it's too early in the season in reality. After the first of the year it should become a real possibility, when we have a better idea of the development seasons of our prospects and how we're doing ok the standings.

Did any of those guys look really good after they got drafted? I feel like most on that list just went downhill post draft.
Very good point, but to be fair, a lot of the D on the list are young and are still promising, and a couple are already good NHLers.

Injuries have derailed a lot of the forwards, but Kaliyev paced for 20 goals in the NHL and is a pretty good young player and Vilardi paced for 30 last season. I also wouldn't write of the rest of the group just yet.

The biggest issue with trading a bunch of good looking prospects is that you run the risk of ultimately moving the best prospects if you make moves too early.

I agree that this is their plan.
Benson plays 9 games.
Olofsson plays 7 games.
Savoie plays 9 games.
That’s 25 games and by then Quinn should be right about healthy and ready to return. If not, a guy like Rousek maybe gets a call up, or even Kulich if he continues to play well.

Today I am attempting to project each NHL team’s depth chart in five seasons. The depth chart will be framed from the perspective of a contending team, so higher standards will be used, for example, to determine a first-line center, a top-pair defenseman or a No. 1 goaltender. The basic rule of this exercise was that all players are presumed to re-sign with their NHL team, though we presume any player who will be age 35 or older in five seasons will not be on the roster. No future draft picks are allowed to be projected onto a roster.

Buffalo Sabres

L1 Jack Quinn, Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch
L2 Casey Mittelstadt, Dylan Cozens, John Jason Peterka
L3 Zach Benson, Noah Ostlund, Jiri Kulich
L4 Anton Wahlberg, Peyton Krebs, Olivier Nadeau

D1 Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power
D2 Mattias Samuelsson, X
D3 Maxim Strbak, Henri Jokiharju

G1 X
G2 Devon Levi

Buffalo is a team built to win now but especially in the future. They have a lot of very good young players at all positions. Their forward depth is excellent. They have several star defensemen too. The Sabres have used a lot of first-round picks recently on smaller forwards like Benson, Ostlund and Matt Savoie. On the same team that has Peterka and Krebs, there probably isn’t room for all of them — which is fine in case one or two of them miss or are traded at the deadline. Levi/goaltending is the only minor question; if he proves he’s a legit starter then look out for Buffalo.

Based on this future outlook.

Team is built to play in the sort of games that playoff games are not. So if we are winning, then that winning will probably look more like the Toronto Maple Leafs than actual playoff successful teams. So while the Regular Season may be fun to watch, there will be a point where that just isn't good enough. Based on their timeline, I'm willing to bet just getting to the playoffs won't be good enough at this point. Calls for a re-tool will be deafening.

Well you have to consider that the person who write this just needed to get words on paper and out the door by his deadline. He didn't try to make a balanced roster for every team in the league, or do much leg work at all.

For one, I'd put Cederqvist on the 4th line WAY before someone like Nadeau.
Second, I'd assume the team brings in some bottom-6 toughness and not just stick with their prospects.
Third, I replace Kulich with Savoie, and Assume Tuch is off the team too, since he'll be entering his mid-30s. Joki is likely gone too.

I figure Kozak and maybe Wahlberg will also be good 4th line players or add some grit up the depth chart. Either way, those players are usually late add-ons or TDL acquisitions for teams on a Cup run. They are rarely drafted by the team that needs them when it matters most.
