Perhaps you all are right about hanging onto Martinez and letting King and Lewis go after the season, unless by some miracle Brown's contract can be moved.

Or Kopitar could actually take a contract for what he is really worth and everyone can stay.

Defenders unfortunate right now, are just at a premium. Especially ones that can play 18-21 minutes. Think more than Muzzin makes, that's a good starting price for legit 2/3/4 defender in the league right now. The minutes the Kings are getting out of McNabb right now at his cost, is outstanding.

It's cheaper to go after forwards, that round out your bottom six. Or bring up a grinder from Ontario, of which Ontario has plenty.

It's not Kopitar's responsibility to take a cheap contract because Lombardi is paying over 8M to a 3rd liner and a 3rd pairing D

Muzzin is a bad example because Muzzin would command like 7M on the open market. That contract is absolute larceny.

Martinez would also be probably paid upwards of 5M.

you are correct though, defenders are at a premium, and that's exactly why it makes no sense to deal our guys who are total steals compared to what the market for them is now.

Kings have two of the best contracts in the league in Carter and Muzzin. The latter might just be the best overall excluding ELCs.

And that's all because of DD, even though he is the most overrated D man in the league.

Mayor saying 8 yrs@ 9.75 nearly done with Kopitar.

How's mayor been with contracts before ?

Closer to being a crossing guard rather than a self-proclaimed mayor; he basically repeated a tweet by more credible sources (such as McKenzie and/or Dreger) made a week prior to his claim...and he has a tendency to repeat the same claim, whereas when it comes close to true (it will, in my opinion), he will in the future claim that he was the one who broke the whole thing.

He IS the crossing guard!

Don't care if the Kings have an extra roster spot or not. This guy is not ready for prime time. Running into McBain yesterday in front of the goal was absolutely ridiculous, truly a Keystone Kops episode, and convinced me that the Kings may need another doctor on staff to extract the splinters from his ass over the entire season.

Rather see Mersch come up. If Weal continues to play as poorly as he has, put him on the waiver wire and cut our losses.

And this is why I want both Weal and Mersch. With Lewis/King/Clifford out, I'd rather turn to Weal than……….. Dowd(?)

Poor Cliffy. Guy has had his bell rung a lot already, wish the best for him, but wouldn't be surprised to see him out for a bit of a long time

So with Mersch coming into the lineup are we going to see him on the 3rd line where he should be or is Sutter going to put him on the 4th line and make him earn it? I think it will be...

Pearson-Kopitar-Gaborik
Lucic-Carter-Toffoli
Mersch-Shore-Brown
Andreoff-Weal-Nolan

I think the lineup would be stronger by switching Weal and Shore.

it'll be super interesting to see what the lines are.
i'd like to see mersch-weal-brown but it isn't likely
maybe it's more likely mersch is on the 4th line since he's never played before?
so possibly weal-shore-brown & mersch-andreoff-nolan
or most likely of all? andreoff-shore-brown & mersch-weal-nolan?
how 'bout weal-shore-mersch on the third?
shame about clifford - hope he's okay

I think people are maybe underrating Clifford, but maybe it's just me.

I feel good about the fourth line even if I don't particularly like Nolan, but without Clifford it looks like an absolute liability. The guy makes a lot of smart little plays all over the ice.

That's one good, experienced depth line of players out of the lineup in Lewis, King, Clifford.

Time for Mersch to show us what he's made of. Hype train is out of control for this kid (just like most prospects).

\i have probably be the biggest Clifford supporter on here. I can't agree more that some are underrating his effectiveness. HOwever if it is concussion related i am more then happy to have him sit for a few.

Another potential nail in the coffin for Cliffy's overall potential. Sucks.

Intrigued by Mersch though. Silver linings.

Interesting that all those questioning Shore's offensive abilities a few pages back have been silent after tonight. The 3 on 3 tonight was a prime example of his great offensive instincts. 95% of players would have been shooting when they received the puck... he on the other hand had his head up the entire way. He just needs some offensive players with him and he should get that with the Mersch call up.

I wouldn't be pounding the drums just yet. Dude doesn't score at all.

It was a good play, an excellent pass to Martinez to catch the goalie off-guard. Not sure if that launches him into the stratosphere of "great offensive instincts" but we'll see where it goes from here.

Mersch hasn't seen one second of NHL hockey, so I'm also not sure that the third/fourth line is due to explode offensively with reckless abandon.
