While I think Marner is a pipe dream, the bolded is the reason I hold out a sliver of hope.
Would be very interested in Hughes coming to make a big offer.
Top prospects there include Demidov, Hage, Kapanen, Beck, Reinbacher, Mailloux, and Fowler.
They've got 15 picks over the first 4 rounds the next two summers.
They could certainly offer the farm, so to speak, to pitch for Barzal.

Chychrun was also a UFA. Dobson being an RFA will lower what he signs for.

Dobson does have the option of 1 year arbitration, taking him to UFA, so you can't be *that* aggressive in negotiations.
exactly - so it's either sign him long term at a pretty hefty pay raise, or trade him for value; you absolutely cannot settle for a one year deal that walks him to UFA.
I don't think that makes any different in this case - Dobson is one year from UFA, so I think Lou's basically having to view it as buying 7 years of UFA.
At least Holmstrom and Romanov are still a couple of years away from UFA, so there's a bit more leverage - although I think it makes sense to lock them both up long term. Tysplakov is tougher, he's one year away from UFA, so in a similar boat as Dobson.

This is Dobson's final year and he has arbitration rights.
Islanders can qualify him and they can go to arbitration and it could be a 1 year contract, which would make him a UFA in the following offseason.
Also, I was responding to a post that said Dobson will get 10+ AAV.
If Chychrun is getting 9 AAV - Dobson is not getting higher than that after this season. If he repeated last season's production maybe.

I think they have to learn from the mistakes they made with Pulock and Pelech, signing them to such long term deals, you are stuck with them no matter what. I like Dobson, but has he really progressed so much he is worth being paid as a top defender in the NHL? How good will he be 4-5 years from now, or is there a decent chance he will stagnate and then you're left with a deal looking pretty woeful.
I think they should offer him a middle ground deal, that takes him to UFA again in the future. It might be the most financially lucrative for him if he can keep his game at the highest level. Offer 4-5 years @ 8 million.

I agree this would be the ideal play, but it won’t happen because Dobson is basically in the driver’s seat and has no incentive to do this deal. If he doesn’t like the offer he can file for arbitration and take a one year deal and walk the year after. I don’t think there’s any scenario where he signs for 4-5 year as at 8. I think it’s either a one year deal at whatever he gets in arbitration or an 8 year deal, likely close to the 9 million range, if not more.
I think you're right here in this assessment.
And in light of having enough RHD offense on the blueline by retaining DeAngelo (and Boqvist for that matter), it's basically the number 1 reason why moving Dobson to a team ready to pay him long-term and make him the (or a) cornerstone of their blueline from here on out in return for a significant forward enhancement looks like it'd be the way to go.
What I can't really identify right now is which destination is the most logical from a need/readiness/assets standpoint.
Could it be a team like San Jose or Seattle?

imo this is a really bad idea. i mean, Dobson could sign a 1 year deal for 6.8 million with a top team. Then they'd either have to match and let him walk to UFA, or take a potential 25-32 overall pick + a 3rd.
imo unless the relationship with the agent is broken, there are far better alternatives.
If they trade Dobson they need to hit it out of the park and I believe there will more than enough suiters and trade offers to get it right .
my preference is someone like Will Smith (SJS) should Grier decide to parlay a chip like that into a D while drafting a F like Misa , Martone , Hagens to replace Smith to a certain degree

I think this is right. Trade for value, or time+value. There are many alternatives here, possibly including into the top 5 in the draft.
They gave up a 1st and more for David J who will be on Roster next year. They also have Zeev Buium coming in. There's a reason spurgeon might be available this off-season because wild are stacked on D
As far as a Dobson trade goes I completely agree on going for value no matter what. I still think there needs to be a fit on the new team if he wants $10 mil which limits the options a little.
I think the Sabres are too obvious for this type of trade. They’re desperate and need to make a competitive move going forward.
What about Dobson + Pageau for Kulich + Power/Byram.
This stops the Sabres from paying 3 LHD $8mil+ and gives them a dynamic RHD they’ve needed plus Pageau gives them experience to replace Kulich which they need or they could flip him for 2nd/3rd at next seasons deadline.
Isles would get a small decline in defense but Power or Byram helps you have another talented defenseman to replace Dobson. I’m also high on Kulich and think he could easily slot into the 2C next season, helping us get exponentially younger. I’d love Horvat-Kulich-Ritchie-Cizikas down the middle next season. And if Ritchie blows up he could move to 2C and Kulich to the wing since he’s versatile.
I think there’s a real trade possibility here. I’d like Peterka too in a Dobson trade, but I don’t think we’d be able to get a quality defenseman in return in addition to replace Dobson.

Dobson behind Faber definitely gives him better matchups for success. The question would be if he's willing to be paid for a 2nd pairing role.
I like the Will Smith Idea, but I would also look into maybe trading to the top 2-4(or later depending who is left on the board)
