It's official, it's a retool. The burn it down contingent ain't gonna like it, but they don't seem to like much anyway.
I’ll believe it when I see it. He wanted to sign Nelson and palms which doesn’t scream retool or align with much of what he said.

2nd and thirds don’t move the needle? What exactly does he think he is going to get in the off-season for these guys? Last year he loved this same roster…now it’s time for change. He’s full of BS.

I really hope Malkin with Lou is not a sign of endorsement.

Don't really disagree with any of the above here. I do not think Palmieri had an offer of a first or even second plus.
It was telegraphed that they were trying to sign Palmieri to an extension. So, you aren't gonna get teams interested if they think he is off the market. He definitely gets more than Beau got and Beau got a 2nd.

And Lou just confirmed they are "talking" with Palms currently and that there is still a chance an extension "might not happen". If it doesn't happen, which is still a risk, we piss away a 2nd and possibly more.

I know, I know "shovels in the ground". It's HF Boards version of "from my cold dead hands."

It’s good to hear Lou say changes will be made this offseason, but the rest of what he said leaves a lot to be desired IMO. The most damning part is that a deal with Palmieri isn’t even agreed to yet and it’s something they’re “working on.”

There’s still a ton of questions as to what exactly was/is the plan. Was the plan to re-tool but do so by trading guys like Lee and JGP and keeping Nelson? Was the plan to keep everyone and try to add somehow in the offseason? Was the plan to try to trade off as little as possible this deadline and try to sneak into the playoffs, and then re-tool in the offseason? It just seems like so much of this is being done on the fly or that they’re trying to have their cake and eat it too. I do see a potential path to a re-tool this offseason, but I really don’t have a lot of faith in Lou pulling it off.

Bit of a surprise. If Boeser wasn’t getting a first rounder, Palmieri definitely wasn’t.

Aside from the fact that Palmeiri has more points than Boeser has this season, I think Patrick Allvin is the new Peter Chairelli. I'd bet most GM's around the league know they can take advantage of him so they lowball him.

Also our friend Anthony Beavillier has 20 points this year and is a 4th liner and got traded, in division, for a 2nd round pick.

I am very confident Palmeri's floor in a trade was a high 2nd+....And that would've been a better move than resigning him.

Interesting that Scott Malkin came to SJ with the team.

Could either be a sign of support for Lou, or a meeting to ask why 90% of the fanbase is furious

Sadly and annoyingly I think that's exactly what it is. If Malkin was planning on firing him you do that in private and/or from afar. What you don't do is show up in public with Lou.

And the fact that Lou is talking so matter of factly about this offseason already tells you it's over - He's coming back.

Well...i actually liked Lou's presser...and do not disagree with what he said...2nd and 3rd round draft picks were not going to move a needle.

Guess we wait and see what transpires over the summer.

Who cares about the presser? It's all just words. Look at what Lou actually does. I'd rather his press conferences were him just cursing out the media...And then when he made trades/signings they were actually for younger more talented players on, wait for it, sensible contracts.

Alas we get the literal opposite from him.

The same person that made up all the crap several years ago about Bailey, Varly, and Johnny Hockey also tried to (and said it) that teams offered the Isles a first rounder for Palms.

This to me is so ridiculous. Why hasn’t he signed yet? You really wanna be here 21? Sign the contract

I mean, on the one hand it’s good Lou recognizes the need to get younger and retool; on the other hand he didn’t really do much at the deadline to show that was the case. And, the presser with Malkin around likely shows ownership has no intention to move on from Lou. So, it’s on Lou to accelerate a retool this offseason

At this point we probably will have to use Pulock or Dobson to acquire that first line forward. We have 3 first rounder's as well in 2026 and 2025.

Not that i see it happening but would be nice if we could sign Boeser or Marner then turn around and use Pulock(more likely in this scenario) or Dobson to find some very cap friendly contracts for our second line
