Interesting how Lou didn't have his usual post-deadline media availability.
It’s a slap in the face to the fans. We have every right to know what the path for the team is and what managements reasons for the decisions yesterday were. Just zero accountability within the organization.

Interesting how Lou didn't have his usual post-deadline media availability.

On the one hand I don't care because I know how inept he is, how he needs to be fired, and there's nothing he's going to say that is going to be a revelation to us fans who know.

On the other hand, doing a post-deadline press conference is called running a professional franchise and treating your fanbase with respect. I watched TSN's trade deadine coverage and a few NHL GMs came on for interviews BEFORE the deadline was over.

Lou made the 2nd biggest trade of the deadline as well as the most moronic non-trade of the deadline, so he had things to answer for. The fact he wouldn't show his face and own the moves he's evidently proud of is an insult to all of us.

Huge opportunity lost. Moving Pageau and Palms also opens up 10+ mil in cap space that can be used to improve the roster. Plus we would have gotten some form of assets back that could be used to improve or unload some of these anchor contracts like Pulock opening up more flexibility.

At the end of the day Lou still thinks this is a good team and that’s the problem. The right tool is needed for the right job. Lou was great after Snow as he finally went for it with a stockpile of assets that Snow left. He filled some holes Garth couldn’t. But now we aren’t winning and the cupboards are barre. We need a new GM.

I think many of us also assume that the roster would get improved through this $10 million. I would have been very open to moving Pageau and signing Palmieri or trading both of them. However it is fair to question that the Isles would have never gotten an elite player with the new cap room and likely signed 1-2 middling players instead of longer term than Palmieri will get.

For all the people who go into cardiac arrest at the mere mention of the word "rebuild" let me tell you something...

The longer Lou stays on as President/GM, the more guaranteed a rebuild is going to be.

This was his year to "retool" things. Instead he continues to triple down on every single person on this roster. The only reason Nelson was traded is because he refused any contract extension from Lou, and Lou was either forced to deal him by ownership and/or Lou knew that the heat/utter embarrassment by not trading Nelson would lead to his firing.

For anyone who can put 2 and 2 together, you've seen Lou's resume. He's told us everything he's going to do by everything he's already done.

Every single player on this roster from Barzal to Hudson Fasching is going to be resigned to death until they become Matt Martin...Or worse Lou is going to continue his pattern of waste more picks getting rid of the bad contracts he handed out just to be cap compliant.

For those of you already discussing the "next moves" that Lou should make because you think there's hope - There isn't. Trotz is the only thing that is keeping Lou from being filed in the long list of lackluster/terrible GM's this franchise has had.

He hasn't gotten it done. He can't get it done. And until he's fired it will continue to be as it's been...And worse.

#FireLou
most of us agree that Lou should be fired; but I don't think that precludes discussing anything else. So, let's go on record as saying Lou should be fired, then ask; if he isn't, what should he do this summer. If your only answer is "nothing, we shouldn't even talk about anything until he is fired", that's certainly your choice, but I do think some of us may still want to discuss potential options this summer, like who to trade or UFA's to recruit.
For instance, my preference is (if Lou must stay), that he ONLY sign one of the top 3 forwards available. If he can't, there should be no 'runner up' signings of more mediocre talent - just go with what is here and watch the inevitable poor/middling season unfold - and hope he is then fired.

This, to me, is the worst case scenario - open up 8-10 million and sign mediocre players to long term deals that will age badly and do nothing to turn the team into cup contenders

And I've said it before and I will say it again, once you lose those guys the team gets worse, and as the team gets worse you will go down the standings and you will get a better pick in the draft, maybe we get lucky and win the lottery, it was an all around benefit to unloading Pageau, Palmieri among others but I am guessing Lou knows his time is short here regardless so he doesn't care about the future of this team

You have to think with Florida acquiring King Rat that Bennett is going to be a free agent. Ideally Ehlers should be the main target but he’s probably the top UFA forward if he makes it that far. This team doesn’t do well in that department. The only plus we have is that with Lou Ehlers wouldn’t have to worry about shaving since he can’t grow a beard anyways. Personally I don’t want Marner unless he can be an adult and show up without his circus. They don’t need additional distractions.
Bennett seems to really like his beard, so I doubt he's coming here anyway. Ehlers would be good; as for Marner, I have no concerns at all about adding him, if it were in the realm of possibility. He would instantly be our best forward by a significant margin.

The problem with Marner is that he comes with an entourage, not just Mitch himself. Personally not a fan of the circus and what it might cause within the team. Even if the team gets Marner, he's another playmaker vs a goal scorer. That's another possession driven player along with Barzal. Not a good combo when both will want to control the offense. Ideally they need a 3rd forward on the top line and a play driving center for the 2nd line who can play with whoever they put there. Holmstrom would be one of the wingers based on the options available and who's playing well.

I respect this post. Thanks for sharing.

I'm saying now what I was saying when Milbury and Snow were GM - And that is there's no hope for a championship. You can tell me that Lou is "so much better" than them and that may be true, but the bottom line for me is this...

It's my belief we're NOT winning a Cup with Lou running things - And that's literally all I care about.

So go discuss any item in relation to the team. Trades, signings, coaching moves, or anything else. If you don't care about winning a Cup and just want to "enjoy Islanders hockey: then by all means. Do what you like.

The moment Trotz left any Cup window was slammed shut. That said many here thought there was still hope with Lou/Lambert. There wasn't...The same way there was never any hope under Milbury or Snow (or wang). I'm supremely confident that years from now when we all look back we will see that Lou should've been fired long ago.

So if you really care about winning the Cup - If that's your top priority - Then to me to discuss anything but removing Lou is truly to rearrange deck chairs on the Titanic.

Not Isles related but worth noting if you want to get a sense of what it’ll cost to sign a wing in his mid 30s. This seems… very cheap for Marchand? Bruins got a killer deal on his extension, obviously there’s a lot of wear and tear, but figured he could get at least 5 mil per year.

Question: This year you could ge up to $1.15m in cap relief if you got someone through waivers to send down to the AHL like we did with Engvall earlier this year. Does anyone know what this will be next year (and following years) as the cap goes up? Will it stay at $1.15, or does it go up by formula or negotiated?

That goes up based on the cap, so it will rise.

This is why I think, if true, that the 7.5M AAV for 3 years , which was what was.reportedly what we offered Nelson. would have been insane know matter what an asset he has been and cap increases. Similarly , I hope that 34 year old Palmieri's extension is going to be at at a signifiant discount from the expiring $5M, but have a strong feeling it won't be.

Fair enough, but he’s not just a pass first guy like Barzal - he’s got 20 goals already this year, and has hit 30 and 35 before. Not sure it warrants much more discussion, but if the Isles are actually in the running to sign him, it’s a no brainer - entourage or not.

I think we can be confident that Palmieri will either get overpaid in years or dollars. Hopefully not both.

You can also use the assets that you get through palms or Pageau to bring in players. It doesn’t have to be only be through UFAs.

Honestly though I think this mentality is killing the organization. Afraid of change so just do the same old.

Well...i actually liked Lou's presser...and do not disagree with what he said...2nd and 3rd round draft picks were not going to move a needle.

Guess we wait and see what transpires over the summer.
