I don’t feel like getting into a targeted argument with those that disagree with my take on Brock so I won’t quote any specific posts.

I’ll be throw this in for perspective though I have no idea if any of this is necessarily true. His wife’s parents and her siblings and kids (first cousins to Brock’s children)
may all be in Minnesota.

If you think that doesn’t factor in his decision I think you’re mistaken.

1. I'm sure being around family more is nice for anyone, and LI is definitely also a very comfortable place for Nelson, and his family. It's a thing, but not the biggest thing.

2. It is extremely rare that a player is traded as a deadline rental and then comes back. Assume if Nelson is dealt, he's gone for good.

These are opinions, no doubt, but imo uncontroversial ones.

3. Trade Nelson. Please, it's time. For his sake and for the sake of NYI's future. It's time. Get ready the lovely tribute video. Say all the nice things. Make sure that when he comes back home it's with no criticism or hard feelings. Get maximum value for him to go to one of the places he okays, which will presumably be a contender, and wish him well.

imo this isn't a difficult decision.

Brock is like third generation from a legendary Minnesota hockey family. There's gotta be a part of him that wants his kids to keep up that tradition. I think maybe Lou is making it difficult for him, but I think he's gonna go.

A MTL poster offered this trade on the main board for Dobson: Laine, Dach, 1st, 2nd, and Mailloux. While at first it kind of looks like a "thanks but no thanks", I think this is kind of the ultimate retool trade.

- It allows you to trade Nelson and Palmieri and have players ready to slot into the top 6 next season without needing to rely on FA.
- Trading them would hopefully net another 1st, 2nd and prospect. All of a sudden you're looking at 6 picks in the first two rounds, plus two solid prospects in Mailloux and whoever you get for Nelson. Two picks the top 15, another 3 from 25-45, and one towards the end of the draft - not too shabby.
- Mailloux could potentially push for an NHL job next season, and gives them options away from Tony D which seems like a wise move given his past volatility.
- Laine comes in and even if he sucks 5v5, he can hopefully add another dimension to the PP and get it out of the gutter. If it doesn't work out and we're not a playoff team next year, we deal him for an additional asset at next year's deadline along with Lee and Pageau.

This is exactly the type of thing I'd love to see from Lou - we could essentially replenish our entire prospect pool this offseason. With that many picks in the top two rounds maybe you even see a trade up for Hagens.

Tavares left to become captain of an Original 6, the the most popular team in the league, the team he worshipped as a kid.

Brock didn't have Minnesota Wild pajamas. The team didn't even exist.

No matter what, Brock will be paid tens of millions, set for life and his kids and grandkids' lives. He may very well decide that, as long as he's being paid well, having his number retired and being a franchise legend is more appealing than what Tavares has dealt with since leaving.

And yet after all that, once again we should NOT leave it up to the player.

I'm 100% in the "trade Nelson no matter what camp," but if the goal is to resign him and he doesn't by March 1st then he MUST be dealt.

If you can't commit to the only team you've known since you were 18, or they aren't offering you enough (which means they don't ultimately value him enough), well then the GM needs to protect the organization and trade him.

It's horrible enough that ownership/management didn't protect the organization with the Tavares situation, but if they haven't learned from it and repeat it well then we should all be very concerned.

Trading a UFA, the return rate in the summer is less than 1%. The player and his family have moved on and look to reset their future. If they stay in house, the reset doesn’t happen, generally.

No one knows what Nelson values on the family side. Plenty of people and players move with kids at various ages.

Pietraneglo’s wife was from STL just had multiple kids and he … left to Vegas for free.

That is a lot of pieces - I think it is better to make a hockey trade. If Lou moves Dobson - he has to get that right.

IMO, the Isles are making a legitimate effort to re-sign him. If he rejects the offer because he wants to explore the market (or play home in Minny), then Lou absolutely trades him by the deadline.

How do they replace that production? The UFA market - Granlund, Zucker, (maybe Duchene), or trade market Mittelstadt do not really inspire much confidence. IMO, If they could resign him for 3 @ under 7 - you do it.

I don't really know for certain. But imo it's possible that two centers for 8-11MAAV is a better than one for 7MAAV especially when it appears the 7MAAV guy's days as a goal scoring center are numbered.

But mostly, I would not plan to contend next year. If they make the playoffs, fine, but most likely it's a good year to chill.

Don’t think the owner wants to ‘chill’ - the parity in the league and contract/player swapping allows teams to fix issues rather quickly.

I would want to contend next season - I think they can - just need to be smart about how they move this team forward. Resigning Nelson and trading Palmieri for a player on an ELC who can play right away - someone like Arseny Gritsyuk (devils, 5th rounder in 2019), who plays on Ivan Demidov's line and was teammates with Tony DeAngelo this season. The Palmieri cap space can be used to address a need upfront.

I fully expect (and word on the street is) that if Nelson doesn't agree to a deal, he will be traded.

I don't know how big a deal it is, but the Wild is not the Leafs. When I say what Tavares had to deal with, I mean being shunned by most of the fan base he jilted.

If he was a young player I might disagree but given this is likely Brock’s last contract I think the likelihood of him wanting to play near family is high.
