Way too much optimism about unloading Engvall. Five years after this one and he’s been buried all year. Would be an obvious buyout candidate if there weren’t so many years left. Nobody is taking that contract no matter who he’s attached to.
4th line has been low key fire for a few weeks now, and I think some stats have showed that Maclean plays way way better with Engvall than without. He’s not useless here

and no, Brock Boeser is not a difference maker. Everyone wants to point out his 40 goal last season (16 on the power play) and simply ignore the 3 seasons around that one
… can’t you say the same exact thing about Dobson?

Oh boy…

That he isn't a difference maker?

Sure, but he is likely going to be one of the better offensive blueliners in the league over the next decade or so.

No. Dobson's was his fist 3 seasons in the league, Boeser's were seasons 5, 6 and 8.

I am willing to bet Dobby's career is much more in-line with his 70 point campaign from last season in year 3 than his struggling season to date- hell, just with a moderate improvement in forward talent to work with.

Boeser is likely to remain the sub 70 point scorer he has always been through 8 seasons now (only one season over 60 points, much less 70)

I wouldn’t want to trade Dobson for a package based around Boeser. If we can squeeze Lekkerimaki and a first out of it though… that starts to get intriguing.

that being said, a lot of signs pointing to EP possibly being on his way out despite the miller trade. If that’s what Lou is aiming at for Dobson it would probably be one of the riskiest trades of my lifetime

It's an easy buyout with the Cap going up, that's yesterday's news. The buyout is $1,167,000 a year.

Engvall's is 1,000,000 a year.

Together, we save over $4 million a year on them. Enough with the Cap whining, it isn't the same issue anymore.
Good thing I didn't mention Mayfield alone in my argument, perhaps read slower.

But no, it is not an ideal situation for many reasons:

1) Like I said we are still committed long-term to Pelech and Pulock
2) We have to re-sign Romanov, who will be getting around that same AAV
3) I doubt they even consider buying out Mayfield with 5 years remaining, especially when Engvall is a MUST buyout and we have a backup goalie we have to consider doing it with who would also cost close to a million

and of course central to my point:

4) It is a central reason why we are looking to trade the D who has the most upside of the group

And you are wrong that 1-3 million isn't valuable to this team right now. In an ideal world, you would like to re-sign BOTH of your young blueliners (RFA's) for next season- and even if you were to get them signed for a combined 14 million, you will have 5 defenseman taking up 30 million of your cap space.....and needing forwards galore as 2 of your limited top-6ers are free agents...

Sorry, but the collective long term contracts given to all three of them (yes, Varlamov too even if it was for only 3 seasons) looked bad when they were done and even (not surprisingly) worse (absolute garbage) now....

My galaxy brain theory is that Lou is going to make the move for Petterson, and then be forced to trade Brock as an extension of that as we couldn't fit them both under the cap.

If the Dobson + Engvall + D. Nelson ask is accurate, you'll essentially get a first and probably a D Nelson level prospect for Brock. The whole thing would basically even out to Dobson for Petterson in the end

they would need to make multiple deals to fit them both in the coming years. Would likely mean Varly, Cizikas and Pageau all have to go, as well as Engvall in the deal to VAN

Nelson has averaged 37-33-70 per 82 over the previous three seasons.

He is on pace for 25-26-51 this season and he turns 34 to begin the 2025-26 campaign

No, this is NOT a player you extend but rather try and trade to a contender and get what you can for him.

Absolutely mind-boggling Lou is looking to do that and trade a just turned 25 year old blueliner who had 60 assists last season....

and no, Brock Boeser is not a difference maker. Everyone wants to point out his 40 goal last season (16 on the power play) and simply ignore the 3 seasons around that one where he has been basically a younger version of the other Brock I write about here, averaging half of that on the PP....

Nelson's last 4-years (per82):

35-32-67

Boeser's last 4 years (per 82):

29-33-62

Yes, one seems to be ascending and is 5+ years younger (Boeser) and the other descending (which is why extending him is ludicrous, especially at the amounts suggested on here) but personally I would just soon keep my 25-year old RD, who I fully expect to bounce back next season....

And lets be honest the real reason why we are looking to move Dobby, and it has to do with a lot more than just needing forwards and a pathetic offense...

It is because Lou gave Mayfield a stupid contract that has 5 more years on it and Pelech and Pulock have multi-years left on their deals with NTC attached (Pelech's turns into a 16 team list next season but the other two don't for another two seasons) and the three are committing 15 million per on our books for the foreseeable future.

All three will be on the wrong side of 30 to begin next season and have collectively missed close to 200 games over the last 4 years (2 are currently on the shelf- AGAIN)....

And of course we have to give Romanov a new contract....

Which spells moving Dobson, which I repeat unless it involves us getting a DIFFERENCE MAKING FORWARD will be yet another huge mistake by this franchise...
Lou signs players to stupid contracts and then 2 years later the landscape changes and those contracts become easier to digest???

Is Lou astute or getting bailed out?

All the “insiders” are coming out of the woodwork I see
Fruit of the poisoned IB tree.

Couple of things...

  • I wouldn't go as far as to say that we have full on leakage, but does seem like there's a lot of buzz around the Islanders when compared with years past. Meaning that Lou may not have tight of a grip on things as he used to. Hopefully that means his power is slipping, and he slips right out of this organization in the near future.
  • I think many in these parts (and the NHL) overrate Elias Petterson. There's a lack of grit/toughness there a reason why he's on the block. And I'm not here to defense JT Miller, but interesting he picked FP to go after. No way I'd want him at his full 11.6M x 8 contract. Vancouver would have to eat a big portion of that (and why would they?).
  • And what's with the Isles being in on every Canucks player? Are we just trying to become Vancouver East? They've had so much talent go through there the past few years and aren't close to contention.
  • Again it circles back to the idea that if a "superstar" is on the block there's usually a reason. This is why it's best to draft your own superstars - And I'll let you figure out how to both get the picks where superstars get drafted, and how to have people in place that can maximize those picks.

You could say the same thing with Rangers getting bailed out of bad contracts.

Although I don’t think Lou contracts are that bad. He signed guys term keeping guys that want to be here knowing Island isn’t a free agent hot bed.

I could see a monster deal where VAN unloads Soucy (they have too much money tied up on their third pair) and/or maybe Hoglander while NYI dumps Engvall. Maybe Danny Nelson going the other way with Dobson.

Edit: And of course NYI is getting Pettersson...

No other GM in the entire NHL is giving Engvall and Mayfield seven year deals, the later who was a 15 per 82 career goal scorer (Lou saw his 9 points in 18 games with the Islanders and ante'd up) and a third pairing defenseman who was on the wrong side of 30.

When you can confidently say what is in bold above, then they are horribly bad....

Mayfield is fine, Engvall, whatever, he thought he saw something, it is what it is.

If Lou is trading Dobson, then Lou is not wanting to pay Dobson’s ask for his performance (or lack thereof and awful defense).

And what else is coming this way? If we aren’t getting a star forward or multiple blue chip prospects back then you don’t trade Dobson.

Do people forget how good Dobson was for most of last season? Remember the entire defense being hurt and Dobson carried the defense? He just turned 25, was top 10 in Norris voting, and coming off a 70 point season on a team with a severe lack of offensive talent.

Trading Dobson for pennies on the dollar because he’s having a rough season is asinine.

Mgmt should NOT let Lou make any deals. Any deals Lou is thinking about is going to be short minded and going to screw isles in the long run.

Mgmt should force him to move Nelson and Parms before the TDL and let the NEW f***ING GM fix the roster and decide on Dobson!!!!!

Pettersson, thought that was implied.
