Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

Perunovuich has some nice edges but I see him following someone of the likes of Will Butcher as early as next season and carving out a career in Europe.

Can you imagine this guy playing in playoff hockey? I'm already getting flashbacks of Tom Wilson K.O.'ing Lubo.

Several wins in a row and Lou has added two blueliners within a 3-day span.

Sorry folks, it's clear where this is headed.

And it's exactly what he's done for several years now.

Bingo.

A leopard doesn't change it's spots....And Lou will keep "going for it" no matter how obvious it is he's essentially buying stock in the Titanic.

I think has more to do with Bolduc and Hutton aren't viable NHL options period and Odelius isn't ready.

Sounds great !! I’m in for this . Just one thing. How do we get the Blue Chip talent ? In 40 years it’s Barzal, Tr91tor, Palffy, Patty Laf. Other great players that did not show it wearing our sweater.

  1. Make sure you have the best possible scouting department.
  2. Stop trying to go for the playoffs/the Cup when it's plain as day this roster has no shot
  3. The more you're willing to suffer in the short term and get higher picks, the more you increase your odds of being in position to draft that blue-chip talent.
  4. Trade any/all pending UFAs for picks prospects. The more you have the great the chance of hitting on a young player...Or being able to trade for one.

Essentially...Just do the very opposite of what Lou is doing.

My best hope is he becomes Thomas Hickey lite for us.

That's actually funny considering how "lite" Hickey is to begin with.

They’re winning now, but just lost their two top RHD and are trying to fill that hole with guys you get for free or conditional picks.

Don’t get me wrong… it might work. But even if it does, we have to jump over like 6 teams for a playoff spot. That basically means playing .700 hockey for the rest of the season. All for the right to play the Caps in the first round, who have been playing .700 hockey for an entire season.

This isn’t the year. If Brock is leaving for the wild in the summer he must get traded, period.
I understand what you are saying, but remember even IF we were one of the top teams in the league only one of those teams is going to win the cup. Nothing is guaranteed and even then a team like the Islanders can be a cinderella team with the right coaching and game plan in place. Trading Nelson now to me is the start of a rebuild, not a retool. At least to me, when you take a player like Nelson- your top goal scorer and replace him with lesser or simply potential picks or prospects you are taking away significant contributor to your roster you are rebuilding not retooling.

DeAngelo and Perunovich acquisitions is retooling. It's an effort to address a PP weakness and recent injuries. In my opinion this is what the team should be doing this year. Maybe let the rebuild begin next year but a full rebuild is inevitable in the next year or two. If they have any last chance this year- which I think they do- of possibly winning the cup they should just go for it and view Nelson as a rent a player at this point in time. Whatever picks or prospects we may have lost by letting him walk will not make a big difference in the big picture. Losing Tavares for nothing was a big loss. In other words if we have one more shot of possibly winning a Cup you weigh that against a few prospects or picks.

The problem facing the Islanders is that the core is homogenous in age where most of there are near 30 years of age. Lee, Puloch, Horvat, Pageau, Sorokin, Cizikis, Duclair and Pelech are all around or over 30 years of age. A rebuild in the next year or two is inevitable. If the season was over I would agree start rebuilding now, but I don't think the season is over and I believe under good coaching and god forbid any more injuries this team could still make the playoffs especially with a good coach like Roy. This year or next is our last year with this core group of players to win the cup. The odds are certainly against the team if you believed chronological age matters. I don't think in the Isles case it does at this moment in time. For most of the players their biological age is not showing. This is not a slow team and I've seen all the evidence I needed to see to believe this team can skate with the best in the league.

I just wouldn't get caught up in the possibility of losing picks or prospects with Nelson or Palmieri. Anything could happen in a given year. For example, there should be no reason why we should have an Eiserman, Nelson, or Tsyplakov in our system yet whether it be by luck or stupidity of other GMS, (see Barzal) there will always be the opportunity to get good picks/prospects without trading away a single player. So my thought is go with what you know. The team deserves at least one more chance to win it all. I agree the odds are slim and the next couple of weeks will give us a good indication of where it stands, but as we all know every single team in this league understands the odds are against any team of winning the Cup. There's only 1 winner each year so stay in the hunt.

I see Perunovich as a cheap boom or bust type trade. There is little risk involved and if he can carve out a place for himself on the roster next season then it's a success. If he underperforms this season, he doesn't need qualifying. Heck, they may even trade him a year from now and get that pick back.

Worst case, if it facilitates a move for someone to Bridgeport when guys come back, it's worth a 5th.

Can we all stop imitating the Flat Earth Society with these speculations? Yeesh.
What? I'm too old to even know what the Flat Earth Society is.... Don't care to either

One thing that is consistent with the Isles is Injuries especially to Pelech and Pulock...
You can throw Varly in there too it seems

I'd probably put Perunavich with Romanov , Tony D with Pelech and leave George with Mayfield so theres a mobile dude with each two-way guy
Perunovich has been a 13 minutes-a-game guy in the NHL thus far, and Romanov will probably be the top minutes guy with the injuries (23-25 minutes probably). So, I doubt we see them together.

The only the only thing I agree with here is point #1. Look folks all you need is a good scouting department and GM who has an eye for talent. Our core was build primarily through later round picks. You don't need to worry so much about trading any/all pending UFASs for picks prospects.

Look at our present core:
Pelech drafted 65th
Lee drafted 151 st
Sorokin drafted 78th
Mayfield drafted 34th
Cizikas drafted 92nd
Martin drafted 148th
George drafted 98th

Heck even Hamonic was 53rd and Devon Toews 108th. You also don't need to be in the top 10 position to draft players like Barzal at 16th and Nelson at 30th. Looking at other teams Kucherov was drafted at 58th.

You chances are are good if you have any picks in rounds 1-3. In fact most of our picks in the 1st round haven't been any more spectacular than the players listed above other than Tavares and Barzal. So this idea of acquiring 1st round picks for players that are still significant contributors to this team is overrated and unnecessary.

There will be plenty of picks in the future for this team to build a strong core. It does take a good scouting department and a GM like Snow to find those gems but of course Peripheral wanted him gone so his points about changing out the GM every year are just ridiculous.

Hold on to your best players if there is any chance this team can win the cup now. Agreed it is very slight but it is there. This team is not the worst team in the league if it wasn't for all those injuries I have no doubt they would be in a good position right now.

Kaprizov out for a month. @ Brock @ MinnesotaWild
Anyone actually look at MIN record?

They beat non-playoff teams. They are beyond AWFUL against playoff teams. While they look good in the standings, the next level down shows a team that if it makes the playoffs, beyond a miracle, is out, if not swept, in the first round.

Spotrac……. Just type the team or player then spotrac or else you get the entire site which may be tricky
First, you need an owner not running a penny pinching operations, that’s pretty much 30+ years, outside of the most recent five since Malkin took over. Didn’t take long for Isles fans to throw crap at him…

Second, you need to invest in the infrastructure.

All the teams with gong show owners and management have suffered, some just got lucky during it - Columbus, Isles, Florida, and even Tampa. Florida and Tampa got ‘saved’ because the crap show provided the talent, the biggest piece was a new owner inherited, stabilizied it, then invested in it. OTT may, may be the next one, but they are far off.
