Roster/Rumors/Speculation/Trade Talk - 2024-25: Re-Tool, Re-Group, Re-Mix, Re-Build

Not crazy about COL system. I like Winnipeg and Minnesota a lot better.

Names I like in addition to a first for Brock would be

Ritchie( maybe their top prospect might not wanna move him for a rental)

Olousson( 22 year old has played in AHL last few years. Slowly developing. similar trajectory as Holmstrom.)

Gulyayev( small Russia defenseman who is a great skater. I’m not crazy about him but I haven’t seen him play aside from shift videos and highlights.)

That’s really it. I like Zellers and Humphreys as well but they’re not guys that headline deals.

Good job Whit, now find Palms a home too

Rumor Mill:
- Colorado isn't done, they aren't thrilled with Mittelstadt
- Nelson has been connected to Colorado

Mittelstadt (26 years old) is a clear downgrade on Nelson, but under contract for two more seasons at 5.75M per, although I am not sure I see him as a center, especially with a 40% faceoff win percentage.

I'm just connecting two dots, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was a swap that could happen.
I’ve been thinking about this possibility as well. Makes sense for Col, but there’s something about Mittlestadt that just bugs me. He was a high pick and looked great for the first 20 games this year then he fell off a cliff and out of favor it seems with Bednar.

I’ve heard people say that he doesn’t skate well enough to play Colorado’s uptempo game.

I’m not sold on Mittlestadt for Nelson yet..

No one has ever said it could or would never happen, just that the isles shouldn’t do this at this point. Carolina is in a very different place than the Isles, they have a deep roster, with a lot of high end pieces and are competing for the Cup. This makes sense for Carolina, but would make no sense for the Isles to ship out younger, controlled players for older UFA’s.
Oh, yes they did.

Mittlestat is a very very poor man’s Barzal without the skating.

Mittlestadt was brought in to solve Colorado’s 2C problem and that was done at a high cost. If they’re looking at Nelson or other 2C’s that means he hasn’t done the job, not sure what he’d do for us.

He’s probably just set on being back in the US.

Miller doesn’t make much sense for NYI IMO. He needs to be on a contender.
Looking at the UFA list (it’s really weak), I think the only way for this team to contend in 2025-26 is through a trade. They should pursue it if they can buy low on Miller without giving up their 2025 first-round pick. This is just a thought experiment, but I love what the Avalanche did—trading an impending UFA and getting pieces for both the present and future.

The Islanders could do something similar with Nelson and Palmieri. They could trade them for futures and then flip those assets for pieces to strengthen the 2025-26 roster. I guess it is also possible they could wait until the offseason to flip those assets.

However, the first step has to be trading Nelson and Palmieri. I believe Nelson gets moved before the Four Nations break.

The next 8 games (with 5 on the road) are very difficult and can mostly put the final nail in the coffin -
  1. vs. Carolina
  2. vs. Colorado
  3. @ Flyers
  4. @ Tampa
  5. @ Florida
  6. vs. Vegas
  7. @ Jets
  8. @ Wild

I don’t think we’re a JT Miller away (which comes with the subtractions of Nelson and Palmieri) from contending and I’m not sure Vancouver is interested in the sort of futures package we might offer for Miller. Seems like they wanted Necas, which seems appropriate if they want to continue competing. NJ might also have the right assets to make this work but who knows if they want to.

Mittlestadt is garbage...don't want him. If Colorado is going for it...Pony up! Ritchie.....Sorry Brock is hot now.

This is actually wild

The only reason they didn’t have to give up a first rounder is because they flamed out in the playoffs again. But in those deals they have given up a player taken in the first round (Necas) and three taken in the second round, plus a useful roster player in Bunting. If they cannot sign Rantanen then the last two trade deadlines (assuming we treat this as a deadline deal) will look absolutely terrible for the Canes

What bugs you is his poor work ethic and inconsistent play. Pass-

Guentzel said ‘no thanks’ after giving it a go. That’s a bit of a warning sign, no matter how much money Carolina has available.

Things I’d hate to see:

1. Hold onto Nelson and sign him for 4 years at a sizable AAV
2. Hold onto Nelson and lose him for nothing
3. Trade Nelson for Mittlestadt. Do you really think his third team will be the charm? I challenge others to come up with a comparable young falling star and still somewhat pricey player who finally put it together on his third team.

There' always a possibility for #1. I doubt we see #2. If #3 happens, it speaks volumes about Brock's value around the League.

Put #3 in the garbage can, it ain't happening
Just look at who was left off the US 4 Nations team and try to make that case. If traded, he's going to reap for us.

Drouin on that very same team comes to mind, but I hear what you’re saying. It’s hard to try and figure out what direction Lou will go with with Brock, and “get younger guy with a couple of 60 point seasons” sounds like something he may prefer to do than outright trade him for picks, especially if the team is staying hot.
