Roster Building XXVI: Picking Our Teeth Off the Ice

@TheReelChuckFletcher sez: "That puts us in perfect position to give Matt Duchene eleventy billion dollars on a one year contract this offseason."

In all seriousness, a crazy high single-year cap hit is a potential way to weaponize space. Maybe not for Duchene, but there's a fair share of UFA and RFA options (especially with our 1sts being so late). If they want to go nuts, they could experiment with giving out a 1x17 offer to somebody and see who bites. Even if we have to surrender 4 1sts for someone like Bouchard or Dobson, we'd still have the two Rantanen 1sts to build draft capital.

I mean, I agree, but you're always chill when I goof on you in good fun, so I can't resist. I posted the gif a while back saying Tulsky was going to make some weird shit this offseason. I'm not ready for this season to be over by any means, but I'm very excited to see what they make happen.

Whatever they do in UFA will have to be weighed against what they need to do next summer with their RFAs (Blake, Stankoven, Morrow and Nikishin), gotta make sure they have the space for them. So, maybe the short-term, high aav deals have a place.

As has been mentioned, if Duchene leaves Dallas, he seems like an ideal candidate for a high aav 1yr deal.

Trading Morrow as one of the assets in return for a real 1RD (Dobson) kills two birds with one stone there.

Fortunately if we keep Morrow rod only playing him 15 games next year will keep his AVV down

I've said before, but I could still see them using a big chunk of that money to recreate the Eff You defense (i.e. two big additions on defense plus Nikishin, of course). Walker and/or Ghost are easily moveable and they've moved off guys quickly before.

Which teams may be in some cap trouble this year? I could see us using one or two 1st rounders on our needs (2nd Center, Dman, goalie).

Cap trouble may not be the name of the game this summer with the rising cap, though I'm sure there will be a few cap situations like Dallas already has or other teams put themselves in by adding big contracts this summer. But there are a couple of avenues that I think can still lead to some movement.

Some teams may be willing to be more creative in general with the excess of cap available. Some teams may realize there is a need to change after disappointing seasons. There are a ton of teams that are bringing in new coaches that can lead to some movement. And the possibly underrated one given the increase in parity this season, a lot of teams might be on the tank for McKenna train and blow it up more than expected. I'm not sure which teams will opt to go that route as there are a lot teams that seem to like to cling to the hope they can sneak into a playoff spot, but I'm sure it will be out there with a few teams.

We also know the Canes have no problem jumping on good players that other teams see as cap dumps when they have space availble like they will this summer, so the Patches/Burns type situation is something we could certainly see.

Hey there fellow hockey fans, first off congratulations on advancing last night.

I came here to ask a question, why do Cane fans hate Erik Haula? I mean he's absolutely washed now but what happened that makes you guys boo him so relentlessly?

Please note, that although the way I type often comes off as sarcasm, this is a legitimate question and I sincerely mean the congrats.

Biggest thing since he left is he has played the heel quite well against us with his actions on the ice and a certain bracelet. He maybe didn't have the smoothest time here as a player and with the way he left. Rubbed folks the wrong way. Mostly just good old fashioned sports hate for most of us I think.

so, that one dates back to the Nashville series from the Covid divisions. He didn't get a bad reception at first when he came back here, but a total cheapshot on Necas in that series and some Neymar-esque sell job antics throughout the series soured a lot of people on him. Some of the stuff about what transpired that got the Canes to ship him out also started getting leaked around that time, and bam, new public enemy #1 here.

How did he leave? I remember the bracelet and understand why that bothers people.

That makes sense, he just seems like an odd guy to hate on LOL

He's been brought up on here before, but I'd take a run at trying to pry Weegar out of Calgary this summer.

Him and Slavin as a true eff you shutdown top pairing for the next few seasons would be a nightmare for other teams. He's signed through age 37, but with both of them at very reasonable mid $6m AAVs, you can slide them down to the second pair as they slow down and (hopefully) Nikishin steps up.

so on that, apparently he was having it out with Rod regarding playing time and started throwing a bunch of guys under the bus when they were within ear shot.

The bracelet bit is actually kinda funny IMO.
That's a big yikes for sure, bitching about playing time is bad enough but saying names is unacceptable. Glad you guys have a sense of humor about the bracelet as I thought it was pretty funny as well.

I've clogged up your board long enough so I'll just say. Thanks everyone for the responses and best of luck in the next round!
