Roster Building XXVI: Picking Our Teeth Off the Ice

I always though MOST of the hatred came less from his whining/moaning, and way more to do with him immediately trying to injure our guys in the first game we played him? Not just hitting them hard, but flying elbows, targeting the head, and hitting guys blindside behind the play? That just got coupled with his pissy attitude as a multiplier. I know I didn't really have much hate for him until he started taking liberties with our players.
Yeah, most everyone (I recall) seemed to wish him well on his way out the door post trade and even with his wife throwing shade at the Org and Rod on social media he wasn't booed during that covid season that I recall. It wasn't until the postseason and he started going after Necas that the boo birds and hate/dislike really started up.

He and his wife had a miscarriage. That’s a little more than an unfortunate incident. When he came back Rod didn’t give him the ice time that he had been given Haula prior to the incident and being a ufa to be he presumably chafed. Which isn’t weird. Ferland got the same way when he had his first injury and then Rod put him on the fourth line upon his return after he had done very well on the first line previously. Then Ferland kept getting hurt and kept coming back.

Rod and Pesce love each other but Pesce wanted out in Rod’s first year when Pesce got bumped to the third pair so Faulk could get propped back up.

These things happen. Not worth the level of hate that’s being given.
I think you're overselling the level of hate most people have. I don't think most have any genuine ill will towards the dude (maybe just a few weirdos out there, certainly not most here). It's just sports hate for a guy that we've gone up against a lot and had a bit of a falling out with the team when leaving and was an ass when repeatedly playing against us. Just adds another level of fun and a storyline since he keeps popping up against us. He's like a D tier villain that keeps popping up in a comic or video game or show that you dislike but don't really take that seriously. But you gotta fill episodes and issues somehow.

Haula is a joke. The real villans are the Wilsons and the actual dirty players that do real damage.

Back to the roster. I think Gost, and walker along with Burns and Orlov should all be gone this year. I know it WONT happen, but it needs to.

The more I think about it, especially with the Hall extension in mind, the more I think we go the UFA route for a 2C.

Bennett, Nelson, Duchene, Tavares are all available options (for now) and I the lack of assets given up would be important if they do what I think they will and try to find a 1RD through a trade scenario

Never underestimate D tier comic book villain.

Yeah pretty much this. The fanbase was actually pretty supportive of him and his wife right after the trade. From what I remember there was a general 'they just need a change of scenery and I don't blame them, wish them the best' kind of opinion about it all.

Things ramped up when he started taking runs at our players in future games. Lots of cheap shots, multiple attempts to injure, followed by some plays where he was clearly taking some of the worst dives you've seen. The guy played like a shitheel against us. Which, fair play, but then the rumors about why he was really shipped out started to surface (vociferously throwing specific players under the bus when blowing up on Brindy to get more playing time), and then his wife taking shots at the fans who to that point showed them respect... It turned, quickly.

And one thing is for sure, at least up until a couple years ago, I think the players raised their intensity every time we played his team as a particular 'f*** you' to him. He threw them under the bus claiming he was so much better, and they've completely owned his ass since. Karma is a bitch

So you think a top 10 team in goals against, with bottom 10 goaltending numbers and is currently in the 2nd round of the playoffs needs to jettison 2/3rds of its defenseman?

Regarding Burns for next year, I don't see him in Dallas, as much as that would fit. They have almost $6M in cap space and need to sign 4 forwards and 1 defenseman to go 12-6-2 barebones roster. They're leaning towards league min on all 5 players. If they go league min on the 4 forwards, they have about $2M left. Even if he isn't top pairing quality, one year of Burns should cost at least $3M, probably $4.5M if I had to guess. Plus, Dallas would prioritize re-signing Duchene (only possible with cap dumps) and Nils Lundqvist at defense.

They'd have to pay to cap dump a year of Matt Dumba and Tyler Seguin, most likely, to make Burns work and keep Duchene. I think we should facilitate that and ask for two more 1sts. :naughty:

I'd take Seguin for another 1st. They will likely find a Dumba taker for less.

If Burns decides to keep playing after this year, you know we're going to offer him a contract. Just accept that now.

Sure, but I'm thinking it would be a "Dougie" type contract offer. I.e., low enough vs. what he could get elsewhere that it would be hard for him to accept. I don't think the Borg will want to handcuff the team with the ironman streak.

Who do you think?

With the cap going up I don't think there will be a lot of cap casualties and there will be some even stupider than usual ufa contracts. *duh* I think even less so since Utah is better funded now.

I think this summer is the perfect time for another Kotkaniemi style offer sheet where some young up and comer feels underappreciated by their club.

I'd much rather a huge 1 year offer sheet to a rfa than the same thing for someone like Duchene.
