What’s crazy is they were willing to take another swing and send a singed Rantanen to Toronto for another pending UFA who sounds like he’s going to July 1. I’m not really sure why Carolina would do that deal and have it backfire again

Because their cap situation is such where money is truly no object for them. They're that gung-ho about getting top talent to play for the Canes at any cost. That is highly admirable.

Yea but in a season where they weren’t really going for it? They offered a boatload to Rantanen didn’t get him why would marner all of a sudden sign here when he’s not even engaging in talks in Toronto right now? Canes smart to wait until he hits July 1 at this point

Tulsky stated that they wanted to make more deadline trades (I'm sure that they could've out-bid Florida for Marchand, for example, considering he only went for a conditional pick), but were hamstrung by the slow-walking of the extension talks. They wanted to try for the Stanley Cup; despite a few holes here and there, we have a strong enough core of players to go on a deep run.

We can win a round or two but I’m not buying that this defence as currently constructed gets you even past a conference finals and I think we all know that

Where does it say an extended Rantanen for an unextended Marner? The article makes no reference that I saw.

There’s been consistent and considerable noise about him being available/wanting out. Obviously i’m being hyperbolic by saying he basically has to be a Cane come next season, but he changed agents less than a month ago and he’s stuck on a perpetually mediocre team. If he goes to arbitration it walks him right to UFA. Curious what makes you think him being moved is unlikely?

i'm okay if they want to trade him to us at the draft.

hopefully he doesn't go to arbitration and just walk the1 year to ufa, that'll mean he can't be traded. so, if he does choose arb, and the islanders choose 2 years, i'll take that as a sign he's on the market. just like we chose 2 years for necas so he'd be tradeable.

If it’s really Barzal or Dobson I would put a big deal on the table in front of Lou and tell him to flip a coin for which one he wants to send our way
I'd be VERY happy if we traded and got either one of those two players, but I'm not sure there's a real chance at either being traded this summer though.

While Barzal would clearly improve our roster depth as a big upgrade at 2C (he's also a right handed center) who is only 27, at the same time, I'd value Dobson a little more as a highly skilled right handed defenseman that puts up a good amount of points, is very big (6'4 and 200 pounds), and is still quite young (25). Those are just so hard to come by; even more than good right handed centers IMO.

However, I truly think Morrow can play on the 1st defensive pairing with Slavin. He might have an adjustment period playing on the 1st pairing, but who would be a better defensive partner than Slavin? Literally nobody.

Center wise, if we don't get Barzal (longer shot IMO) this summer, then maybe either sign Bennett, or we circle back to Vancouver to trade for EP40 to improve our top 6 center depth.

It’s been reported leafs were talking extension with Rantanen for 13-13.5. Marner wouldn’t be extending here he won’t even engage in Toronto on talks what would change in Carolina?

I’m not trading Nadeau he’s a pure goal scorer the one thing this team will again be chasing in the offseason. Unger Sorum will need at least another year in the AHL so there’s really no rush. Nadeau probably even starts in the Ahl too
But we aren't allowed to has goal scorers

Rod absolutely trusts Jarvis, hes getting the hardest minutes on the ice.

So offseason, we have nearly 40m in cap, some teams are going to have to unload and UFAs looking to get paid.

Either we chance it on Defense with 2 rookies or make a swing again for Slavins partner.

We absolutely need a high scoring winger and center

So does Marner take 12mx7 (or trade for his rights and make it 8?) Could Ekblad and Bennett shake loose? Boeser extended for KK?

Gibson?

Marner - Aho - Boeser
Svech - Bennett - Jarvis
Martinook - Staal - Hall
Robinson - Jankowski - Stankoven

Slavin - Ekblad
Nikishin - Walker
Gost - Chatfield/Morrow

Gibson

Would pass on Gibson and just bring Freddy back at this point. He's just as injury prone (or more) and Freddy's just better anymore, and has been the last 4-5 years.

Similarly Marner isn't signing for 12x7, that's pipe dream discount money. Guy is a massive diva and I'd imagine wherever he signs it's going to start at 14. I honestly think we can get Ehlers and Boeser for only marginally more than that (~15M combined).

I'd look at making a move at Dobson from the Isles for RD1, though they have a ton of space so it would have to be trade rather than OS. I'd offer them both the firsts we got from Dallas for him if we can negotiate an extension ahead of time.

Yeah, if we can get Ehlers or another roughly all-star tier top 6 forward instead of Marner, I'm in favor of that right now particularly after dealing with Rantanen who was pretty much a diva himself; one that couldn't even give us enough time to make another big trade at the deadline due to cap space. Also, yes, Marner would take up way more cap space versus good alternatives.

If we don't get Dobson from the Islanders, getting Barzal from the Islanders instead would be a great improvement for our 2C. Either one is a major improvement to our roster.

Another potential deal that fell through, according this article out of Vancouver the Canes wanted to flip a 1st + Kotkaniemi for Boeser and an unnamed prospect that the Canucks didn’t want to part with.

If Boeser hits the open market, I imagine the Canes will be after him. Also, if they had traded Kotkaniemi for another winger, who on the world would have played C? The article suggests they acquired Stankoven as a C, but that seems off. Anyway, interesting stuff.

IDK if that source is reliable, at least when it comes to the package. I don't think of Stankoven as a centerman, at least right now. Maybe in a couple of seasons, I could see it, but not yet.
