Roster Building XXV: Winning Rantanen's Undying Love

Tinfoil hats on: Tulsky is floating Rantanen to all teams and stringing them along to paralyze the TDL market. Canes make another big splash trade at 2:55 tomorrow leaving many of the other playoff teams without a significant move. Rantanen then signs an 8 year extension at 4, press conference at 5.
if this happens build the man a f***ing statue, lol

I am so glad that us fans are not GMs or we don't have some sort of public ownership model like you see with some lower tier soccer/football clubs in Europe.

The neck snapping pace of changing opinions.. whew :)

The Twitter quote above is very true. The talking heads need us to trade him way more than we need to trade him.. they need to stir up the market because they blew it the first time around on the initial trade to us... they had zero milking of things leading up to Rantanen being traded here. They missed it entirely. They need us to trade him way more than we need to trade him so there is something to talk about on their wall to wall coverage tomorrow..

Of course our GM is calling all teams to see if he can swindle someone and get a better package than we have right now. That's what we do alllllllll the time. How many times does Tulsky have to say it before we believe him that they never want to miss any opportunity. If a contentibg team is so desperate to go "all in" this season that they give us such a crazy return that we can't deny then mayyyyyybe we see him traded by tomorrow.. getting a crazy package back of maybe more settled and controllable assets compared to a pending UFA might be a possibility to entice Tulsky to deal.

But if not, then we are no different than when we first made the trade. We willingly made the trade knowing he was a pending UFA and had to sell him on the team and if nothing else we would get a playoff run out of him versus one extra year of eligibility of Necas. Could be a big win could just be a deadline splash done early.

Nothing has changed and no one is reporting that Rantenan has told us he will not sign with us no matter what. Just that a signing likely won't happen before trade deadline.

Unless a team is desperate to add that they will overpay to an extreme and have the assets to do that while still not harming their current year team that they are trying to add to, then we likely can get similar return closer to July 1 for a sign and trade ala Tkachuk to Florida a few seasons ago. Rantanen will still want max dollars and we will be the only one that can offer the 8th year to max out his money. When we are talking the kind of money he wants, he needs the 8th year to help spread the money out as 7 years makes the AAV less manageable...

So unless we get to abuse someone in an overpay trade scenario like we are constantly trying to do every day to find deals, then I expect we have Rantanen for the playoffs and we revisit later.

And all the talking heads that have agendas and are desperate for any kind of story for deadline day can keep spouting their nonsense and trying to do their own version of tampering for other teams or to just self promote. I'll believe it when I see the trade officially done this week.

The Canes Gossip Girl is blaming the wag. Apparently, Raleigh doesn't have enough skyscrapers and glitz and glam. While the money involved would allow one to jet off to such locales, I could see how if you valued a more cosmopolitan lifestyle committing to 8 years could give one food for thought, in addition, to game related matters.

I mean if I'm Rantanen and his agent, why rush it?

At the end of the day, if we don't extend him, we made a major f***ing mistake in trading for him in the first place. We used our best trading chip we had on a 3 month rental during a year where we really just don't have the roster to contend for a Cup. And if that happens on the back of what happened last summer with Guentzel, maybe its time to seriously consider if our front office working arrangement is good enough to go after the elite talent we need to win the Cup.

Shit, at this point we still would have been better off extending Dougie Hamilton for what he wanted. We f***ed that up, too.

They don't call them gold diggers for nothin

It is a bit funny in our attempts to maximize trade returns we missed on several players but then continue to put ourselves in situations with very little leverage. Guess we won't have to worry about the the trade market for awhile after this.

Trade him then. Maybe in a few months when his camp are ready to make a decision, assuming its in free agency, we can revisit contract discussions.
Lose the 8th versus 7 year advantage though. I've come full circle on MR.

Trade night was ecstatic; but watching his play over last few weeks has tarnished the trade glow.

He can score but he looks to be as much more of a facilitator and Canes don't have anyone on the roster that can finish like a big goal scorer should to take advantage of his attributes (maybe Nadeau next year). Also, he falls down as much as KK's first year in Raleigh.

Thus, if he is traded for pieces that help us, ie a 1 or 2C with size & youth, ie Byfield (even though he is a lefty), I would take it. Then, the ultimate trade is a cost controlled young C for only one year of Necas (who would probably leave anyway).

I still don't think we trade him unless he'd extend somewhere else as a part of the trade and we could get a massive return, but I don't think that's happening because I don't think Rantanen is ready to make any decisions about his future. Not getting him signed by the trade deadline does not mean he won't sign here. I don't blame him for wanting to take plenty of time and evaluate his options. Dude thought he was gonna be a career Av and now has to make a massive decision about the next 7-8 years of his life. I still think we have a great chance to keep him and even if not I'd rather have a playoff run with him than trade him for some scraps, which is what we'd get if he's being traded as a pure rental.

If we could get a Byfield or Clarke we should pull the trigger immediately. Anything that we can do to get a useful player with the potential to make this trade sting less.

Exactly im not trading him for futures and prospects we have enough of that. Let him get settled here try and have playoff success and use the 8th year as your leverage point before July 1.

And I'll say this, losing Necas for what seems like nothing isn't much different than losing Hamilton, Pesce, Trocheck, Skjei. This team has been letting talent talent slip consistently under current leadership.

It all depends if he's saying "I need more time to decide" or if he's saying "I'm never signing here". If it's the latter, we definitely have to trade him. If it's the former, I'd still probably trade him simply to let him be someone else's problem

I don't care one way or the other - the only thing i know for sure is that roughly 97% of the posters on hfboards saying it is a complete failure if we trade him, will immediately start saying things like "too much" and "won't age well" if he re-signs.

Necas is a little different considering that he's not really a cap casualty in the same way as the other four were. That's why I'm skeptical that the Canes won't just re-sign Rantanen if they can. This feels like more of a long-term play, similar to what they wanted to do with Guentzel (though he ultimately chose to go elsewhere). I'm sure that they have plan Bs all over the place, however.
