Roster Building XXIV: Our Hearts Go Pitter Pattersson

I think I’d rather have lankinen than Gibson if those are really the choices, but yeah i imagine they’ll probably give Andersen a one year deal and figure it out later

Maybe? It could be the FO is thinking "hey we've had FOUR goalies register shutouts this year, so we can make anyone look good" and run it back with PK/FA and 1-2 quad-A types as insurance. Sure, it makes us nervous, but the FO may gamble on another moneypuck year of goaltending and seeing how our prospects develop by next summer.

Having said all that, watch a Gibson trade happen in 3...2...1...

You mean like that Freddie Andersen dude that's been really great here when healthy?
A goalie that has missed as much time as Andersen is not great, definitively. If you're not playing, you are a cap drain twice. Once for you to not play and once for your replacement(s).

Put me in the unconditional "Freddie's gotta go." camp. I'd rather have a healthier, less-talented goalie I can actually rely on to be ready when we need him.

To be fair, I'm not saying keep Freddie again, just saying that we didn't let a good goalie walk before. I won't hate it if we keep him either because he is a great goalie. As far as injuries go, I've stated it's becoming common for every goalie to miss time, so I tend to worry less. It's going to happen. You need depth down to the AHL level these days. Even a guy like Thompson has some injury history.

It’s hard to argue that they’re wrong about that approach. Are they going to win a cup if they’re down to a 3rd string/minor league goalie? No, but no team is. They’ve been one of the best teams in the regular season relying on the likes of Spencer Martin and Dustin Tokarski, they probably don’t need one of the very best goalies to win a cup, just a reliable nhl starter.

Does that describe Andersen or kochetkov in the year of our lord 2025? The jury is out. But if there’s no better options there are certainly worse ones

When he plays, Freddie is a great goalie. Unfortunately he gets hurt so often that he forces us to turn to a 3rd goalie for large swaths of the season, mostly at AHL quality, and you have to take that into consideration when talking about his usefulness to the team. Id have the same reservations about Gibson as well

I agree that the risk is high with Freddie. But depending what else is available, I'd consider sticking with him. Guys like Gibson and Demko wouldn't make a ton of sense to me for the same reasons unless Freddie just moves on to another team and situation. If they can get someone that's been slightly more reliable injury-wise, go for it. Still, don't be surprised when a goalie with less injury history gets injured. Nature of the beast.

Is the expectation of rising cap, set? Doesn't it have to get the "okay" from the owners?
Cane's have a lot to work with, with really only needing to replace Burns on D(Orlov swapped with Boom), Goalie back up, and then obviously the FWDs. (Rants, ERob Hall?) are really the only ones I see being re-signed. Lets see some fantasy GM'ing!

I think that depends on health and playoff performance from Andersen. If he gets hurt again or has a bad playoff, I think it's unlikely they go back to him even as a backup.
The problem with Andersen in the playoffs last year was pretty obviously fatigue. We just needed to alternate goalies like we were all season. We were doomed by bad goalie management far more than bad goaltending.

For what Andersen brings when healthy, he's more than worth keeping around. But we do need an NHL caliber #3. For the money Andersen would cost compared to any remotely comparably skilled goalie, we can easily carry a 3rd. To my mind, that's the best option right now. Keep Freddie, carry 3 goalies.

I think they already have in the form of a CBA and the escrow agreement made during the COVID years. The rising cap is a formula baked into the system. The only questions surround has the escrow "loan" been paid off and what were the revenues this year. Nothing the owners can do otherwise.

If we run it back another year or two with freddie, especially given what's available, i'm fine. Just get a solid 3rd to run the show with the wolves. Khanavzbzysz or however you spell it has shown flashes so buy him more time to develop as a backup, too. (

Now, given my druthers, if we're gonna run it back with someone, trade freddies rights and a pick in the offseason to chicago to bring back mrazek. He's been better than a goalie should be behind that "defense" and deserves a better team. Plus, mrazek + pk would be a boon to local cardiologists!

I’m sorry, but if one of the conditions to keeping a goalie is that the team also needs an NHL quality #3, that means they’re not a goalie worth keeping. I’m sorry, but that’s not just a regular acceptable thing to ask for, at least for a non Vezina level goalie.

What are your thoughts on Vitek Vanecek as the goalie target this offseason if the others that make it to free agency are too expensive?

He seemed to have good seasons his first 3 years in the league when playing for winning teams but has struggled the last two years, with a bad Devils team last year and a god awful Sharks team this year.

Do we think he could get back to his old ways playing for the Canes? At this point, my preference is to trade for a goalie but not sure who that could be
