I take it as nothing more than the parties realize Canes have lots of cap space and can afford Marner next year. The person supposedly scooped the Taylor Hall trade, but I'm still very skeptical.

That would be... interesting
I'd also add that Marner made sense as a similar rental if Toronto talked about that at all, but that would need some major returns to allow Toronto to feel like they would still be competitive this year. Not sure if Necas + Drury + picks would have worked for Marner.Marner makes all the sense in the world if Rantanen chooses to go elsewhere. Otherwise, I don't really see a fit here if we want to make sure that guys like Nikishin are locked up for max term.
Yeah that is the only reason I thought I'd share the tweet. The person supposedly scooped the Taylor Hall trade, but I'm still very skeptical.
This checks out with what I had heard. Fwiw I heard f***ing NOTHING about Rantanen even over the summer. In their piece on the Rantanen trade, ESPN said that Kotkaniemi and Roslovic were on the table in a deal for Miller.
So while unlikely, I suppose going back to VAN is possible.

And that Miller will agree to waive to?The Canes probably want salary retention in any Miller trade. Therefore, it's possible that the Canes get back to Vancouver if Miller's market is really down the toilet, but I still think that there will be a team out there that's more desperate for improvements and who won't be as picky about taking the full contract.
I think that account is run by a 12 yr old or something. Also, the more I think about the adding a Miller/ High profile player, the less likely we'd see Rants re-sign. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think we let KK run that 2nd line with legit wingers and no Drury to swap with him. Let's get a rugged 4C who can win FO's + another D man and we look okay.
I remembered your post as I was scrolling through their Tweets.
Also him in the same Tweet thread:
Yeah, that's just too unlikely lol. As nice as it would be for the team's cap and flexibility.

Hard to say where the truth lies with the Avs and Rantanen. I do remember reports when Devon Toews signed that the Avs grinded hard to get him to only seven years and it was a maybe a lower AAV than he could have gotten on the open market. As shocking as it is, we aren't the only team to grind for these deals. And even though it was said that the Avs were willing to give Rantanen more than Panarin in AAV, who knows if a formal offer to that end materialized and if it was for the full eight years. Some of that might line up with him having been willing to take a discount off the market rate as he said and this report says. It's hard to say if much of that alleged willingness will extend to us now that he's been traded.
Lets just pay the man. When they are starting their playoff run and you have Aho& Rantanen on the same line you need someone with better finish than Blake next to them
They can’t afford to miss that many chances, he looks good and you notice him a lot but that notice doesn’t result into goals enough
Using Panarins name by someone was a smart move
”Avs were willing to make Rantanen the highest paid winger in the league” by the smallest margin and oh by the way that Panarin contract was signed 6 years ago and is not relevant at all in todays market
But it made the Avs look better and Mikko worse by not accepting it
I bet Mikko would have taken the Mack contract and by all reports Avs werent’ willing to go there
