Roster Building XXIV: Our Hearts Go Pitter Pattersson

That would be... interesting

I find this very hard to believe that this person has legit information other than speculating. Maybe this person has a source into Leafs or into the Canes where they could get one side of the story, but to know there is mutual interest would mean they need two very good sources OR know of a conversation between the two from one source, which is a big no-no while he is signed with the Leafs.

So....BS.

Marner makes all the sense in the world if Rantanen chooses to go elsewhere. Otherwise, I don't really see a fit here if we want to make sure that guys like Nikishin are locked up for max term.
I'd also add that Marner made sense as a similar rental if Toronto talked about that at all, but that would need some major returns to allow Toronto to feel like they would still be competitive this year. Not sure if Necas + Drury + picks would have worked for Marner.

Much rather give Hall a two year deal, bring in a “best 4C in the league” kind of guy, splurge to get a legitimate partner for Slavin, spend the dough to get a Kochetkov equal or better in net, re-sign Robinson. Any extra money to play with should be used with potential big money Nikishin RFA deal in mind. Maybe an upgrade on Chatfield, a bigger guy to partner Nikishin? I think i’m at the point where i’m cool with keeping KK at 2C for now, maybe they flip him in the summer for an upgrade but really don’t mind him staying even if it’s to take over for Staal in two and a half years. Hell, if we win a Cup this year or next Staal might just call it early.

We are going to have oodles of cap space this offseason regardless.

Probably makes most sense to saddle up to all the other teams who want to sign shiny new toys and take their perfectly good players for pennies on the dollar. But those kinds of moves will need to come around draft weekend when we have a clearer picture of what to do with Rantanen, Hall, Roslovic, and the other free agents.

In their piece on the Rantanen trade, ESPN said that Kotkaniemi and Roslovic were on the table in a deal for Miller.

So while unlikely, I suppose going back to VAN is possible.

The Canes probably want salary retention in any Miller trade. Therefore, it's possible that the Canes get back to Vancouver if Miller's market is really down the toilet, but I still think that there will be a team out there that's more desperate for improvements and who won't be as picky about taking the full contract.

And that Miller will agree to waive to?

I think they are stuck with him at this point.

If the prices for both EP and Miller have been/are low according to multiple sources, maybe Carolina should, at the very least, try to drive the trade costs up for both. I don't particularly want someone in the Eastern conference getting either player for relatively little.

However, Miller is more likely than EP for us at this point as others have indicated. I doubt we could do much in even driving up the costs for EP with the current roster players we're willing to trade.

Or maybe we say forget getting a 2C in a trade this season altogether (especially two expensive centers on long term contracts; EP more so) and focus on the position this summer along with, importantly, getting a new defensive partner for Slavin.

In the summer, signing Bennett for 2C, and Chychrun next to Slavin while Morrow develops, wouldn't break the bank (compared to EP40, Marner, or likely Ekblad) while still getting two really good players for positions of need.

I think that account is run by a 12 yr old or something. Also, the more I think about the adding a Miller/ High profile player, the less likely we'd see Rants re-sign. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think we let KK run that 2nd line with legit wingers and no Drury to swap with him. Let's get a rugged 4C who can win FO's + another D man and we look okay.

I remembered your post as I was scrolling through their Tweets.

Also him in the same Tweet thread:

Yeah, that's just too unlikely lol. As nice as it would be for the team's cap and flexibility.
