Roster Building XXIV: Our Hearts Go Pitter Pattersson

Weren't there several here who wanted us to trade for Saad a few years ago? Can't say I've followed the player but he's on waivers now, so probably a good thing we never paid assets for him...
haven't watched St Louis this year much so not sure if it's age just catching up with him or if he's simply in DGAF mode at this point. But his numbers are rough this year that's for damn sure, never was great but he was nowhere near this bad the last few years.

I don't think it'd be too egregious to pay Robinson in the $2 million range. I don't expect him to be what he was at his best this year but he's a great fit for what we do even when he isn't scoring. And he does have that ability to play up when needed. I think he's 4th line Martinook. While I suspect we could go find another one of him for cheaper, I do think continuity is great if the contract isn't insane.

Now, I wouldn't give him some crazy long term like we did with Carrier or like the Isles used to do with their 4th line. But if he's agreeable to a two year deal at around $2 milllion AAV, I'd not be too upset at that.

I think a solid defensive center for the 4th line PK2 slot and maybe an emergency defenseman might be all.

Off season though. Goalie and RHD for Slavin, unless Morrow gets the nod.

Slavin - Morrow
Nikishin - Walker
Gost - Chat

I know RBA would be hesitating to do that.

If Canes bring in a #1 RD that can also quarterback a PP this offseason, I wouldn't be surprised if we ship off Ghost, and bring back Orlov on another short term deal.

Slavin - PP QB RD???
Orlov - Chatfield
Nikishin - Walker

I don't think it'd hurt to ease in Nikishin into the NHL, even tho we've got high expectations of him. That's 3 defensive pairs that you can play evenly 20 minutes a night without worry.

Also Ghost has been a ghost offensively lately. 0 PPP, 1 assist, in his last 12.

Man, this Vancouver drama is something else. I would absolutely love to see the Canes get Pettersson. Perfect fit age-wise and needs-wise. Too bad they no longer have the piece(s), outside of what they likely won’t trade (Nikishin, Jarvis, Svechnikov), or cap space to nab him.
If it gets too bad, and no one will touch Miller, forcing JRs hand. KK, Ros, FUS might make a movement

Ghost almost looks like he’s hurt or something looks a step behind skating wise looks like he’s labouring a bit

So Mikko likes the countryside more than big cities

... claims dad. I don't much appreciate parents or anyone talking on behalf of a grown-up or anyone really on what someone supposedly likes or doesn't like. They're their own person. May be a close person knows these things for a fact, or may be they're just reflecting their own preferences for someone else's with no basis in truth whatsovever. Mikko, a millionnaire in his late 20's, has, I believe, a trade/no-trade list for x amount of teams in his SPC, and I'm pretty sure his dad didn't make that list.

Some parents have a good relationship with their children and actually know their preferences and desires pretty well.

Look, nothing is certain until the ink is dry. But I think it's safe to assume his dad has a decent handle on how his son thinks.

I think the best we can do is like Tulsky said. Get to know the player and what makes him tick. There are tons of positives about the team, the area, the coach, etc. And then we need to come in with a big boy offer from the start.

There are plenty of good angles to approach getting to know him and selling analagous stories. Rod coming here orginally, Sebastian being happy here along with numerous other Finns over the years, the number of players that have stayed in the area or tied to the org. But we still gotta be willing to pony up and probably quicker in the process than we did with Guentzel.

very impressed with robinson's game. creates havoc like martinook. great comparison IMO. I would consider him as 1st line LW with aho and rants for a few games. see if it clicks particularly if we now have something with hall-kk-svech as the 2nd line. I do like svech on his offwing. These lines really emphaisze creating balance with the RW's being the primary shooters. LW's robinson, hall and martinook can play fast, and disruptively, while providing secondary scoring.

I would say a Finnish middle-aged (supposed) middle-classer has a very poor handle how the preferences of their son has developed since the said son moved to another continent to be a very successful sportsman and has travelled in about thirty big American cities on the read journeys alone. Even if they had a close relationship.

And the cities and their characteristics are one thing, but a professional hockey player (and his agent) will also think in terms of the teams in the said cities. Columbus Blue Jacket or Los Angeles Kings may not be a good fit for a player for the years to come even if the city of Columbus or the city of Los Angeles was.

I wonder if JT Miller hates both Elias Pettersons.
Probably. Guy seems to hate a lot of people. Tampa was pretty quick to get rid of him after what was the best regular season in league history when Vancouver offered up a conditional first. Took a couple years but he started to beef with Bo Horvat there, Horvat gets traded. Vancouver doesn't suck last year (PDO) so if he was beefing with anyone it went pretty well ignored because it didn't become a total distraction. Vancouver is back to being shit this year and he's beefing with EP, as well as rumors that others want out there as well. Sometimes a guy is just flat out toxic for no other reason than he's an asshole.
