My preference is to bring in another top center vs another winger. But we saw how much an elite winger elevated Aho's game with Guentzel's arrival.

Also thoughts on this statement?

This is what I’ve been saying for a while now, but the trajectory is different this year (hot start this followed by 2 month lull). We will see if this version cranks it up to 11 in February and Match like previous teams but I doubt it. 104-106 points is my guess.

To me, I think a Miller trade makes the most sense for Carolina in the offseason, when the team can swallow the $8M cap hit outright without trading anyone off of the current roster. If a deal is fair right now, however, there's no reason to not pull the trigger now, of course. We will see.

Devils and Rangers require retention, we don't
Out of the 3 canes make the most sense for many reasons. Devils don’t really need a 2c they have Hughes, hischer. Rangers won’t wanna trade their first round pick with heavy protections on it this year they may not even make playoffs. Canes can take the full cap hit and have been chasing a 2c since Trocheck left.

Not someone who will cost 8M or whaetver until they are like 37
If there are any positions to take these sorts of contract gambles, it's at top-6 center and at top-pairing RHD. Those are the rarest commodities in hockey. Still, you only do it if the asset value is there.

Who is the young, legitimate 2C signed long term that’s available? Teams don’t hang banners for maintaining a roster with contracts that are perfect on paper. 24 year old Kotkaniemi is putting up the kind of production you would expect from a future washed up Miller btw.

Friedman in his latest 32 thoughts post last night says Carolina is a team to watch they are active and ready to pounce. Also says the rangers and Carolina are 2 teams that have had permission to talk to Miller
This is interesting, but also a rehash of what every insider says about the Canes leading up to the deadline each year. They’re always looking to do something “big” (Meier a few yrs ago, Pettersson last year and maybe this year too, Miller this yr, etc). They’ve yet to find a team willing to make “big” trade for a player with term at a price the braintrust finds acceptable. I don’t expect that to change.

yes, still miss Pesce at least. Skjei is take it or leave it, I think Orlov's been fine as the #2LHD and Ghost is exactly what we needed as the #3LHD. We'd be neck and neck with the Caps and Jets if not for the goalie injuries this season though.

I think some teams and I guess Carolina maybe would wanna do a deal before the 4 nations break? The deadline is only like 10 or 12 days after the break so maybe teams wanna get a head start on deals

Who is available for a “pounce”?

JT Miller and Pettersson has been discussed at length. I only see Miller coming over if they can get him for pennies on the dollar. Don’t see any way Pettersson is traded.

Dylan Cozens maybe? He’s a big, righty C with term.

No one else really comes to mind unless they wanna go totally out of left field and go for Zegras at as a majorly distressed asset, perhaps along with Gibson. But that seems uber-unrealistic…

Have a feeling we will trade for somebody that has not been considered "available" and it'll be completely out of the blue. Similar to when we got Skjei and Trocheck, neither of whom were in any trade rumors until we grabbed them like right at the deadline that year. Not gonna make any guesses as to who that mystery player might be. Of course I could see us just getting Miller instead but I don't consider him that big of a splash or the result of a "pounce."

I think Miller is a pretty big splash and I think they are ready to pounce if they get him at the price they want

To me Miller is closer to an Evander Kane or TDA type of distressed asset (which very much has fit our MO) than a big splash like an Eichel, Tkachuk or EP.

Miller is better than TDA or Kane of course and will cost more but he most definitely is not close to an Eichel, Tkachuk or EP in terms of impact/cost to acquire, which is how I would view a "big splash" personally.
