Roster Building XXIV: Our Hearts Go Pitter Pattersson

Lol, both are obviously off limits in a Pettersson trade.
I can see why Nikishin would have been off limits before the extension, but with EP's extension, I think Nikishin is fair game. So is Jarvis, frankly. Would I move Jarvis in a trade for EP....no, but nobody should be "off limits" if you think you are getting a 100pt center back with 7 years of contract term. EP is not worth both in the same package, but one or the other or Necas or anybody on the team wouldn't be off limits value wise.

That said, I wouldn't trade Jarvis or Aho or Slavin or Necas for EP as it doesn't do anything for us as a whole other than make us more expensive. Adding EP to the core group is the key, not rearranging the deck chairs. I would trade Nikishin for him if he was the "biggest" piece going the other way.

His contract is not a good thing man. Maybe he gets back to 100 points or maybe he continues to be a below ppg, minus player like he is right now. At nearly $12M per season that's a big risk to take, even with the cap going up. Not one that would warrant Jarvis (on a great contract) or Nikishin (limitless upside with a likely high floor as well, plus likely relatively cheap at least for a few years) going back the other way. And I've been high on EP in the past and wanted us to trade Necas for him last year (and many here probably know I'm super high on Necas), but I really am not a fan of that contract with how he's playing this year.

I'd be open to taking that risk as there is obviously upside there, just not including Jarvis or Nikishin in negotiations. Nor do I think the front office would consider moving either of them in an EP deal.

Jarvis is a hell no, he just signed a sweet 8 year deal with us and helped out by doing some deferred salary...plus his contract is WAY more of a value than EP. And I think Jarvy has a kind of drive and tenacity that this team needs more of, not less of, he's a Rod kinda guy. If EP stays a consistent 100 pt producer on that contract maybe, but that's not currently who he's been.

If we're going to trade for EP, the time is now. Necas is the obviously main piece, and probably not signing here after his deal is up. KK is also a goner if this happens. Van wants a center back in some capacity and KK fits that bill and for cap purposes. It would suck to lose Morrow, but he's our top defensive prospect not named Nikishin. and you're probably adding a pick. I'm not sure Canes offer the best package, but I think because there was interest in Necas/KK last year we may have an upper hand. Just one caniac's opinion.

EP is damaged goods & shouldn’t get the same package discussed last year before the new contract.
It makes for an interesting negotiation.

He's locked up which should lead to higher value vs being a RFA but he's not living up to that contract in year 1 which should knock him back down. I'd say whatever the deal was at the deadline last year is probably fair plus maybe a trade of picks.

Are you getting a 100 point player? That's the question. If you don't than the 12 mill a year makes the KK contract look like one hell of a deal.

If they decide EP is the guy they want then you go hard after him. Necas, KK a first and a prospect if that’s what it takes

How’s he damaged goods coming off a 89 point season? Hes also a guy who’s got a good track record come playoff time 24 points in 30 games

He's a $12m per year player playing at a 64 point pace, which, is basically a regression back to his career average outside of the last 2 years, which isn't great when he's in year 1 of an 8 year deal.

If youre going to be paying him that kind of money he needs to be pushing 100 points every year, which he's only done once.

He might not be damaged goods, but it's a hell of a risk to trade assets for him at his full cap hit, especially if they want an elite price for him.

We should not be anywhere near an EP trade unless he emphatically makes it known he wants to be here.

Not only is he vastly underperforming his contract, it's a contract he signed after the leveraged threat of being traded here when contract negotiations were stalled.

I don't want to trade for a guy who seemingly doesn't want to be here and might pull a Brendan Shanahan demanding to be moved if we trade for him.

Another wrinkle to a potential EP deal would be the fact that I just can’t see Vancouver, or any team, trading for Necas until July 1st when they can work out an extension. Necas isn’t returning any major asset for us as a guy who can walk in 18 months.
