Jake Guentzel looks like just like the Luke Skywalker ripoff character from the Star Wars ripoff movie “Starcrash” which is so unbelievably bad and has an mst3k episode that is pretty solid and everyone should watch. I’m not sure if this makes me want the cane to acquire him more or less
This is scouting done proper.

Says the possibility of a trade could lead to an extension for Guentzel instead of a trade. I swear, if another GM uses a trade to the Canes as a threat to re-enter negotiations, I might lose it.

Something like that happening again would piss me off, but Dubas extending Guentzel would be absolutely f***ing hilarious that I kinda hope it happens.

Regardless, Kypreos has zero sources.

Even dumber when you realize we'd probably trade out of the 1st anyways.

The 1st should be the one thing there's zero debate over. For a player like Guentzel, that's an easy move.
I know right, I mean no way (Jarvis) can we do better (Aho) with a late first or second round pick.

Guentzel OR Buchnevich would be great (the latter has 1 additional year left so he'll be expensive IMO).

But, based on our bad luck and history, I'm trying to have modest expectations for this deadline.

I agree with people saying we need a good 2C, but who is available for that role? Nobody it seems.

Also, for the right trade, let's not have a problem with trading our late 1st round pick. We need to improve the team now, AND also ideally in the medium term, and not focus too much on a prospect that might or might not be ready 3 years from now to play in the NHL.

*Edit* If we DO get Guentzel, I really hope he extends with us and isn't a rental.

Jarvis was a lottery pick and Aho was drafted almost a decade ago by a different regime.
Jarvis was a 13 and Aho was a 2nd rounder. The point being you don't throw away first round picks for 2 -4 months of a decent player. JG won't be the best player on any line he is one here unless there's a bunch of injuries or Rod gets crazy with line mixes.

You don't risk losing out on a much better player like Jarvis or Aho for a short term rental that in all likelihood won't make a ton of difference come playoff time.

Yeah, #13 overall is a lottery pick. Those picks aren't available for rentals because A) they're more valuable and B) those teams aren't trading for rentals. So IDK why you're bringing Jarvis up.

I can easily argue that risking losing out on a player like Ryan Suzuki (an actual "late" 1st rounder) is 100% worth trading to get a player who could potentially put you over the top.

Kypreos is way down on the list of people to take seriously. I still don't expect us to get Guentzel, but if the Pens are dumb enough to re-sign him at this point, go for it. Nice to have teams we know we won't have to take seriously in the Metro in the coming years.

And here it is, this right here. Guys traded at the deadline specially the big name guys are rarely what puts a team "over the top"

So don't waste first round picks on them. No if they have term or you know you can resign them thats different.

The more they sign guys like that to longer contracts, the longer they'll be in that "outside lottery pick, outside playoffs" purgatory

I'm tired of watching this team forget how to put the puck in the net during the playoffs, so yeah, I'm perfectly okay with "wasting" a late-20's/early 30's 1st round pick on a proven 40-goal scorer who has 34 goals in 58 playoff games.

Screw how long his contract is, I want to win a Cup, not win an offseason "top prospect pools" ranking.

Are you aware of what they traded for Doug Weight the only time they’ve ever won a cup?

The balking over giving up the 1st is ridiculous. Any player we would draft with that 1st would be at least 3 years out from making the team, likely much longer. Guentzel helps this team now, as early as Saturday if we get the deal done today

It's like Waddell is so worried about losing a deal that he's not risking anything to make one.
My guess is that it's not about the pick(s) but about the prospects. Dubas has already said he'd be more interested in prospects, good prospects. So while I'd guess a 1st is in play, I think it's the prospect demand(s) that could ultimately be the sticking point. And much like the Meier deal, it will depend on which prospects Pitt likes more.

I'd still like to see us work some sort of magic for Lindholm.

How many times has that been successful? How many teams have blown on big trade rentals the last 3 deadlines and how many have made the finals or won the cup?

The answer is a lot have done it and very few have made the finals

What is the counter example? How many WLOG teams won a cup? St. Louis I would think qualifies, then....who?

That’s because only 1 team wins the cup every year. And that team usually adds a significant piece at the deadline.

Yes, he wants prospects closer to playing with Crosby and Malkin.

So a Morrow or a Blake would be more likely to be of interest than even Nadeau.
