Kapanen has a better shot and arguably better hands. And while he doesn’t have Grabner’s speed (few do), he’s pretty quick. Also, feisty. I like him as a target.
I love him as a target. Anyone comparing him to Grabner hasn’t watched Kapanen or Grabs much imo. Different players.

Kap can cycle. He finds open ice much better than Grabner. He •easily• has a better shot too. He doesn’t have Grabners speed but he’s a better overall player.

He would make Buch expendable imo. Trade Geo for Kap. Trade Buch + Something significant for a long-term option defensively.

Guys like Kakko and Kravtsov and Chytil aren’t going to excel playing the role Kapanen can for the next 5+ years. He’s not sexy, but he’d be a very welcome addition here in NY imo.

Any report that we have seen from our own insiders to what was reported, never once put it that way. The deal, as far as I know, ALWAYS had Miller included. That was the whole of it. There were no partial deals.

You will find it at the 13:40 mark.

Thanks Ramp and I wish everyone would listen to that because it couldn’t be more clear.

The trade is done as a package, no doubt, but without any single doubt JT Miller for Namestnikov is roughly put against each other.

Look, NHL GMs were extremely flat and Gorton desperately wanted to kick-start the rebuild. Waiting until the draft to make this trade was a negative from his POV. He pulled the trigger. That is Gorton’s defense and it’s pretty good. But when two fairly young players that are not rentals are dealt like that the return should be really good. Namestnikov was certainly assigned good value by our side. He didn’t have it. Period.

What do people think prospects like Lemieux, Howden, Hajek, Lindgren were?

They were prospects who where being or going to be blocked, they were sold by teams who were high in the standing and who were making the playoffs, hence why they were being or going to be blocked.

The same could probably be said about several of the players/prospects people are mentioning, Julien Gauthier is 22 and Kuokkanen/Jost are 21.

Are they grade A perfect, of course not, those type are unlikely to be available at the trade deadlines.

Where/when do the Fox and Trouba types come from, the summer, Same as Zbad.
Exactly. I wouldn’t say I get upset, but it’s definitely annoying reading how “our” guys who have a pretty damn good track record and reputation are shit but some 22 year old who has never sniffed the NHL - it at least, any success - is “untouchable” gold. I have to believe this is just fans perspective and real-life managers who’s jobs depend on performance agree with me.

Was Bored after rereading the thread...so I made up a scenario I would not hate to see...

TDL Trades
  • Chris Kreider to Boston for 1st, Heinen, Fredric
  • Brady Skjei, Alexander Georgiev, Brett Howden + Nico Gross to Toronto for Willy Nylander plus 1-2 deadbeat Marlie contracts
  • Ryan Strome + Dallas 3rd to Carolina for Julien Gauthier, Patrik Puistola and NYR 2nd (back)
  • Jesper Fast, Nick Ebert, 4th Round pick to Philly for Robert Hägg + 7th Rounder pick
Buyout Window
Buyout Marc Staal

Trade at the Draft
Lias Andersson, Libor Hajek, Boston 2020 1st for Darnell Nurse + Edmonton 2020 3rd + ?
Win #2 pick in the lottery - Draft Quinton Byfield

2020/2021 Roster
Buch - Zib - Kakko
Panarin - Byfield - Nylander
Kravtsov - Chytil - Gauthier
Lemmy - Fredric - Heinen
Smith

Nurse - Trouba
Lindgren - Fox

What’s all the talk w moving DeAngelo? I get Lundqvist is coming but he’s going to need a few years to crack the lineup no?

The D could use Staal out to see if Rykov or Hajek can step up by years end

Can’t really see them moving Skjei without a vet replacement coming back ... Gardiner is but he’s not better than Skjei imo

Fox is incredible. But he's not DeAngelo dynamic. Fox will be an extremely good two-way defender for a long time, you can see it in the way he thinks the game. Good one on one, great patience, rarely makes a bad outlet pass or gets beat off the rush.

DeAngelo cannot be made expendable by either Lundkvist or Fox. We have no one else like him and we would not be smart to let Tony go.
I’m with you. I think he’s a rare kind of talent. And those are the guys a team should lock up.

I’ll repeat something I posted a while back...the former President of an NHL team told me that fans worry way too much about the salary cap.
They may not worry about it, but it still exists and creates consequences. And the context there is owners value money over wins. I wonder how the TML board will feel about casual cap management if the leafs miss the playoffs and that 1st rounder turns into a good, cheap player. Dubas will be just like that president you talked to... former.

Lol what?

DeAngelo isnt loved as much around the league as everyone love him here. Talked to a coach in Columbus and a scout with the bruins about him, both said they wouldn't be interested in adding him to their locker rooms and they both doubted either team would have any interest even if that was an area of need for them, they felt they would look elsewhere.
Asked them about Strome as well and they both felt he found a fit in New York and werent willing to gamble what it would take to get him vs him being the same player somewhere else, one said that this was the same for DeAngelo, he wasnt confident he would be the same player somewhere else. They both pointed to Kreider and Fast as guys who they like.
Prepare yourself

His price tag after playing for so cheap this year.

Kinda flys in the face of everything his current teammates have said about him but ok certainly those guys from teams he's never played for would know best...

A former president of an organization saying fans worry about cap space to much isn’t shocking

Especially when you consider we’ve gotten unnamed current GMs say shit like “looking forward to signing guys to a contract we’ll regret later” when going into free agency in the summer

Sure, as one mentioned he seems to have found a fit here. Teams talk, players talk, the league knows who is who.

Yea and it makes sense. The reason these guys don't need to care about things like that is because by the time a FA contract goes bad or they bottom out to rebuild they will likely get fired and it'll be a new guy in charge. Other than in very specific instances management not being a part of ownership can present large problems.

1. Kreider to Colorado for Jost and a 1st

2. Geo, Strome and Hajak to Carolina for Reimer, Haula, Gauthier, Rees and Tor’s 1st

3. Reimer to Toronto for a 4th

4. Haula and our 2nd for Puljujärvi

5. Three-way with Minny and Calgary
Fast and Lias to Calgary
Bennet to Minnesota
Jordan Greenway and a 3rd to NYR

I am not the biggest fan of Jost, but he would at least maintain/increase his value if we got him. We get three 1sts this summer. Restock the forward cupboard.

Line-up next year:
Greenway-Ziba-Kakko
Panarin-Jost-Pulju
Buch-Chytil-Gauthier
Lemieux-Howden-Rees/Kravy

DQ can rotate the young forwards. If you don’t show up you won’t play.

Yup I agree 100%

We’re seeing a real time example of this with the Sharks. Doug Wilson signed those massive contracts knowing he won’t be around to see them out

If only it were that easy. Likelihood of it happening are not good.

We've seen this in other sports too. Easy NY example is the Mets where Minaya rebuilt the farm system, got guys like Harvey and deGrom in the organization, then got fired after a collapse and two years later and years later several of his picks turned into impact players. Without the GM having a stake in ownership you run into issues of misaligned goals where the GMs goal has to be first and foremost to actually keep his job. Fans, on the otherhand, can afford to look years into the future on how to form the team because they have nothing tangible at stake.
