McIlrath is a very good puck mover. He's far from a pure defensive defenseman/goon. He's got a great slap shot that he needs to use more and can make a good outlet pass. He's more two way defenseman than enforcer.

His weaknesses are lateral movement and the occasional positioning brain fart.

It`s a predicament since they extended Girardi contract, and some mention he will be playing on bottom line pairing role. But AV can`t do that with his contract - he will probably see top pairing minutes.

recurrent problem I see these past few seasons…maybe more a Sather problem than Gorton: we seem to gravitate towards D prospects about a couple seasons after they could've been had for cheaper. Vatanen, Barrie, Franson all could have been had for cheap at points, but rumors on our interest seem to come only when their stock is higher.

Not much news, although I did miss the first few minutes.

No changes to coach's challenge, executive committee recommendation on expansion to Board of Governors will come June 15th or earlier, Bettman and Daly seem to think all the details about the expansion draft are figured out, they didn't disclose many details about how an expansion draft would work, NHL won't participate in Olympics unless IOC pays for it, the deadline for those discussions is probably around the end of the year, Russian Ice Hockey Federation has been told Slava Voynov isn't allowed to participate in the World Cup of Hockey because he's suspended by the NHL.

Nothing about the overall *increase* cap space so we can keep Yandle for example?

Thank you.

Huge. Definitely makes things easier for teams.

I wonder if teams will still be able to trade picks/etc to essentially tell expansion teams "I'll give you X pick if you promise to not take _________ in the expansion draft"

This means a small increase or decrease. Like...pretty small.

At least, it sounds like that to me.

Which contract rules are being used for expansion draft? The rules of the season that just finished or the rules of the next season? If they expand for 2017-18, the answer will effect whether Girardi is protected. If they expand for 2018-19, the answer will effect whether Staal is protected.

Expiring NMC to a NTC of any kind can be exposed for 17-18?

Maybe that's why the Rangers are keeping G. The Rangers know the details. Probably.

Why wouldn't a team be able to comply with the expansion rules? Unless there is still some salary cap component which there is. They scrapped the 25% and are calling it a new name. Same concept.

If players with NMC's are automatically protected, and don't even factor into the expansion draft, a team like the Hawks who currently have 5 players on NMC's would essentially be able to protect their whole roster. I think what they will figure out is how many NMC's is fair to have, if the assumption is that NMC's don't factor into the draft at all.

Then again, this could all be solved by making teams protect players with NMC's, but I assume they aren't doing that because this is the only thing I could think of that would make it a problem.
