For those who want to do a buyout... check this out

Jared Sexton@jaredjsexton

The cap hits of Shattenkirk and Smith combine to $11M. If they are both bought out, the cap hit in 20-21 would be a combined $9,229,166. So if the plan is to buy them out to free up cap space this summer, there needs to be an additional plan to clear just as much next summer.

Enough with the buyout talk. Much easier to trade vesey, named, and shatty at 50%
Not a legitimate source.

I find it hard to believe that about shatty at 50%. Especially from the hack uncle Larry. Braun got a return lol. And people want to buyout Smith and or stall too. That's an even worse dead cap hit and dont forget we are still paying Girardi. Very short sighted to do a buyout on any of these contracts. It's two more seasons and they can sit if we bring someone up to take their place. Cap isnt moving up and word is it will be set around 83m for the next 3 years. Cap space is great to have, we dont have to spend to the cap every year. Plus again if we didnt have the cap space we would be able to take advantage of teams like the jets and get trouba for nothing.

Brooks has really good sources... he just stinks at spinning up that information into speculation. When he says the Rangers have gotten no interest in moving those guys at 50%, I believe it. Of course, that was over a week ago that he mentioned that. Things can change pretty fast.

The Smith dead hit is better than the Shattenkirk. They're pretty similar in years 1, 3 and 4, but that 2nd year isn't nearly as bad as it is on the Shattenkirk one. Braun is a better player than Shattenkirk.

I don't really agree that buyouts are short-sighted. As I've mentioned, they increase your flexibility if a great opportunity comes along during the season, which keeping a player and sitting him does not do.

Not many people would consider buying out both of them.

Also, not easier to trade Shatty @ 50% according to reports.

Agreed. Some of the potential decisions before the Rangers are likely either/or.

Kreider/Buch
Kreider/Panarin
Shatty/Smith

Gorton is a highly active GM, maybe the most active based on his tenure here and very short tenure in Boston, but even he is going to have a limit to how many changes he makes.

Wait, what did I miss? What did BBK say? What's happening? Do I need to change my username again?

One of the following things is true as of 10 minutes ago:

A. The Rangers went out to lunch with Knight.

B. Gorton has been behind closed doors on a phone call for the last 30 minutes.

C. Gordie Clark did 5 shots of tequila.

Brooks hasn't been informed for years now in my opinion plus is completely against the rebuild and has his love fest and hate fest for certain players. But again that's just my opinion.

I believe with the position we are in the buyouts are short sighted.. why do we need to buy anyone out? We dont need the cap space now or the roster spot. If the spot is needed they can sit. It allows us flexibility now when we are not competing for a championship and still rebuilding. Its hurts our flexibility and cap in the coming seasons after bc that is when I believe we will be competing and that space we save allows us the ability to do what we need or make trades for players others cant afford like trouba.

The idea is to be great and compete for cups every year like the Bruins for a long time and the way the pens did. Not to be good enough to get in but not be good enough to actually win

If we don't make a big splash today by 9PM involving Kreider, Vlad, Vesey, or Shattenkirk, I want Freddy Claesson gone.

"can't always get what you want" = Rangers are trading the #2 for some depth pieces. Can't always get the Kakko that you want

Oh man.

Okay, I've been looking around the league for a landing spot that makes sense for Shatty and I may have found one.

Dallas has 3 RD under contract, Klingberg, Polak and Johns, but Johns didn't play at all last year due to post-traumatic headaches. He is supposedly feeling better and looking good, but there's a possibility that they will need/want another RD if they aren't sure he'll be ready for the season.

Dallas Stars Daily Links: Is Stephen Johns On The Brink Of Return?

How the Stars feel about Johns’ status at the end of this month is going to greatly impact how they approach the offseason. If Johns is healthy and can play at the level he was at two seasons ago, the Stars are in a pretty comfortable spot on defense. If Johns isn’t ready to go, the Stars have a rather large hole to fill.

“It’s a financial jigsaw,” Nill said. “We got probably two spots (for unrestricted free agents), and how much money is going to go to those two spots? And how do you allocate it? And Stephen Johns’ injury comes into play and what’s available (on the market).

Last year Dallas was the 2nd best defensive team in the league without Johns. Their PP was good (21%), but they are losing Spezza, who had more PP points (12) than Benn (11) and Heiskanen (8). Shattenkirk could give them another option if they don't want to overload Heiskanen, and they can shelter him 5 on 5.

Dallas' other RD options are Honka (RFA), a couple minor leaguers, or they could re-sign one of Lovejoy or Fedun. I've got to think (hope) that Shatty is a more attractive option for them, especially if it doesn't add significant cap.

So, I propose several different deals. They can take whichever they like best.

  • Shatty@75% (4.9875 mil for 2 years) for Hanzel (4.75 mil for 1 year)
  • Shatty@50% (3.325 mil for 2 years) for Cogliano (3.25 mil for 2 years)
  • Shatty@50% (3.325 mil for 2 years) for Nichushkin (2.95 mil for 1 year)
  • Shatty@50% (3.325 mil for 2 years) for Comeau (2.4 mil for 2 years)

None of these deals save us much on the cap this year, but they get rid of Shatty, freeing up a spot on defense. Smith can play the right side if Fox needs time in the AHL, or he can be a spare D/13th forward.

The cap adds for Dallas are minimal, at worst (925k) the cost of a typical replacement player. If necessary, we could retain more in the Hanzel deal so that they are actually saving cap. Dallas might need to add a pick for some of these, but nothing significant, I don't think.

If we do the Nichushkin deal, we can keep him for a year and hope he breaks out, or buy him out. He's only 24, so the buyout is only 1/3rd. The cap hits would be 700k this year and 450k next year.

The other buyouts aren't that bad either.

Shatty gets to play on a likely playoff team for a couple years (and probably with Zucc) and we get a little bit of savings while shifting some money from defense to offense.

If we want to expand the deal, they include the 18th overall, we include Kreider at 50%, and we take Hanzel and Nichushkin and buy them both out.

Thoughts?
