Dolan said they have cap space and they expect to use it. That could easily mean pursuing a young player with a big contract (Nylander) or looking for a big contract (Trouba). It doesn’t necessarily mean the UFA market.

True enough but same concept of they are actually looking to add key players and are not intending to sit back and attempt to be the worst team in the league next year

Elliotte said the same stuff last year. They would be all over Nash and Grabner in July. They would try to trade for Karlsson. They want to get into the Tavares thing.

He thinks Quinn is a good coach. Elliotte needs to watch the Rangers games. He loses some street cred with that statement.

Gorton talks about the timing needing to be right for the Rangers to sign a free agent. At the fan forum in October, Gorton said the timing needs to be right to see where the other pieces fit. Same comments to Custance. Timing. Fit.

The team is a gong show. Big **** storm.

Don’t worry, unless either Panarin or Karlsson goes total Shattenkirk on Gorton and is willing to sign anything they aren’t coming here. And the odds for that must be really slim.

The UFA market sucks. You won’t get any value on it unless it’s some reclamation project like Claesson. Gorton is obviously in the process of trying to pull off as many good value moves he can to rebuild the organization, fill the barns in other words.

Gorton was asked about the off season, he didn’t totally shut the door on the UFA market but he immediately turned the discussion into maybe doing something else, something more unconventional. Gorton won’t go after a big RFA, doesn’t make sense.

I think it’s quite obvious — where can you make good value moves in the NHL? As a buyer on the trade market. Many sellers and so many GMs are afraid to do anything.

Gorton will have ammo and flexibility going into this off-season. It will be like Christmas Eve for him.

I don’t think they’re looking to be the worst team in the league. But, they’re not likely to be very good, especially if they aren’t going to remedy the three big contracts on D.

This is not how it works.

Not how what works?

The lottery is 1/2/3. Rest is order of finish.

How is the team that finishes 7th landing in the 4 spot?

Rangers need a top 6 pick.

Hughes, Kakko obviously would be amazing, super speed the rebuild.
Podkolzin, Dach, Cozens and Byram certainly help the cause and are likely to contribute soon.
Krebs, Zegras, Boldy, York, Turcott and Broberg would kinda be more of what we already have and be 2 or 3 years out.

With the Schedule we have in front of us, I think we have a pretty decent shot at a top 6 player, which we desperately need. Just too lazy to crunch our odds.

I am a firm believer we win a top 3, we're due. 1966 was so long ago. I've been saying it from the beginning of the season. This is the year!

Any math people out there wanna give me and like-minded posters a number crunch (Leroy Jenkins lol) on our chances statistically to land in Draft spots 4, 5 or 6?
According to SportsClubStats (which isn't super, but hey) and some math:
1st: 5.94%
2nd: 6.22%
3rd: 6.51%
4th: 0.06%
5th: 1.19%
6th: 6.86%
7th: 15.67%
8th: 18.57%
9th: 15.04%
10th: 10.05%
11th: 6.12%
12th: 3.51%
13th: 2.16%
14th: 2.00%
15th: 0.07%

First, even if they do nothing in the free agent market or via trades the Rangers as a team will get better "organically" as the young players will continue to progress and get better.

The main point though that is that there's specifically some division on this forum about a need to dip into UFA market, not about generally taking advantage of a cap space to improve the team.

We need a losing streak!

Thanks for the post.

If the season ended today, yes it would be. Minuscule chance of dropping to 10th as well, though.

Yes except the season does not end today. There is a probability distribution that you need to compute how likely they are to finish 4th,5th,6th,7th etc. and from there you can calculate what their likelihood of ending with each draft pick is.

The will be some growth, but, this team has not yet replaced the offense lost by trading Hayes and Zuccarello. If they end up trading Kreider for futures, there is more offense to replace. So, they may at best, break even.

Yup, I wasn't clear. I'm not including trading Kreider either.

The team next season will be better than they are right now which would bring them somewhat equal to how the Rangers have been on average for the whole season.

Do you believe Quinn is not a good coach?

The Rangers have taken so many too many men on the ice penalties this season. That’s coaching.

I hate how he manages the ice time. The Rangers season is over. He is coaching like the the Rangers are battling for a playoff spot. Can he give Andersson a look at center with decent players? The Rangers are rebuilding and they have Strome getting nearly 20 minutes per night. Put Andersson in that spot. Put Chytil in the middle. Experiment a little. Those players are more important to the Rangers future than Ryan Strome.

His line up decisions make no sense. Andersson is a healthy scratch because Quinn wants to give Connor Brickley an opportunity to play. He benched Chytil a few weeks ago for who knows what. Buchnevich has been in and out of the doghouse so many times. Smith on the wing. DeAngelo. Chytil and Pavel have been all over the place. Fourth line. Second line. Fourth line.

Go back to his time at BU. They had so much talent and they won one Beanpot when Eichel was there. That’s it. All of those NHL draft picks. He(and his staff)recruited the players at BU. It was BU. Not Northeastern. The team underachieved. Inconsistent play. Something always went wrong. He couldn’t get the players on the same page.

His response to everything is we need to work harder. Do the Rangers have a system? I love his perplexed look when something goes wrong.

Dolan said the next coach had to develop players. Based on the 1st season, there are more questions than answers. The Rangers want to bring in more young guys. How many of the Rangers young players are better after this season?

More questions than answers.

The Rangers have the 2nd fewest ROW in the NHL. Those loser points are deceiving. People say Quinn is a good coach because the Rangers aren’t dead last in the NHL.

I think that’s it.

Oilers fan here in peace...

So, ik you guys love Zibby and value him very highly and it'd take a big offer to let him go.
In Edmonton we need a player literally exactly like him, he checks off all the boxes for what we are looking for and I'm a huge fan of his. He's a perfect fit here, like a crazy good fit.

So, I bring you an offer for him. Feel free to modify it and good feedback/constructive criticism is appreciated.
Also, Bern, I'd appreciate if you kept the word count of your response below 400 lol.

Ok heres my offer:

Our 1st (~8/9th) + Jones + Yamo/Pulju + our 3rd this year + a conditional pick in 2020
*Pick is a 1st if we make the WCF. 2nd if we don't.

For

Zibby + Vesey/Namestnikov(50%)

No thank you. Zibanejad is in the long term plans and fits our timeline to a tee.

You'll have to make the 3rd conditional in some way or the Rangers wouldn't consider it.

How many 7th round picks does your team have in 2019, 2020, and 2021?

@RangerBoy thinks that rookies should automatically get ice time because the Rangers are bad, basically. No one has to earn anything! Just play Chytil 25 minutes a night! Make Andersson the 2c! f*** it! Because that’s how you develop players, just throw them into the fire. You’d make a great exec for Edmonton.

Oh and also Quinn sucks for trying to win. The balls on that man! How dare he try and win games!

saying that we won't go into next season with all rookies and $18-20 mil in cap space also doesn't mean that we are going after a top player that makes huge $$. they could just as easily 'use' that cap space by bringing in some less vets on short term deals to help in the short term and be later moved for more picks.

I think its a pretty big assumption to think using the cap space next year means committing 7-8 years to guys for huge $$

That’s also true. I think the point is that having cap space and looking to use it doesn’t mean a splurge in free agency.

For a team that's as bad as ours, we're pretty much in every game. ADA is also having a breakout season under Quinn. Zibby is another player having his best season ever.

I'd like to see Quinn play guys like Andersson as well, but Quinn has earned my trust with these kids based on how other young players have evolved this season.
