While I really think Shattenkirk could help a number of teams, I just don’t know if someone is willing to inhale that contract even with retention. The perfect landing spot for him IMO is Vegas. To me, he is the wild card of the trade deadline. One place the Rangers could help Vegas is to take back David Clarkson’s contract.

If the Rangers get even a nibble on Smith, he’s gone. Otherwise he’ll be bought out this summer. Staal is a summer trade. Same contract issue as Shattenkirk.

Even after this year, this team has one more active trade deadline in its future.

Think we get either Niku or one of the young coveted Dmen out of Calgary for Hayes

Zucc to Nashville or Winnipeg if Winnipeg does not trade for Hayes

Skjei or Shattenkirk as the unknown trade

Namestnikov to one Tampa/Boston/Toronto/Dallas

Especially Doug McLean.
That I do agree with . I'm not a big MacLean fan since he tried to sabotage our 94 Cup run by leaking the Keenan talking to other teams about signing elsewhere info to a buddy of his that runs a radio station on PEI . I was wild when that happened back in 94 !

I can't see Gerard Gallant wanting Shattenkirk....but stranger things have happened .

St. Louis is in a playoff spot and they play both Nashville and Dallas in the next 4 games. That is probably just a scouting for hockey purposes there.

Buffalo probably has interest for Pominville.
So does that make St. Louis a buyer? Wouldn’t mind seeing Arizona fo something to help out their team.

Trading Kreider would be detrimental to this team moving forward. He can and will be a huge part of this rebuild, the transition to the next competitive group.

Fast, big, physical, forwards do not come around often. Teams desperately try to find that type of forward.

For 2 more years at $3.325M it's not bad value for a team. The question is whether or not someone still sees him as a legitimate top-4 option, or if his stint here as solidified him as a PP specialist who can be a 2nd pairing guy if absolutely necessary. There isn't premium value there, but for a team who needs a RHD and sees how limited the market is, there's a chance he could have some interest around the league.

I don't think the Rangers are that interested in trading Staal. I think they like having a veteran on the back-end to mentor the kids and with only 2 more years left on the deal it's not like he's crippling the cap situation.

Smith is just a crap situation all around.

As much as I love the guy, I don’t love the idea of him at age 32 on the contract he’s going to get

Then make it stop! Dont let the bad man trade Kreider.
Anyone who saw the photo of my grandson with the stick that Kreider gave him will understand part of my rationale. The bigger part though is I see Kreider as a guy with a long productive career ahead of him. I don’t want to trade him for anything less than a foundation piece and some additional sugar. (e.g. I’d take a deal like Necas and Fox from Carolina) or Nylander and something else from Toronto.

I mean that is purely a guess.

I could argue that he is in great shape, has a great physique, a body that will hold up into his 30s. His legs will be there. A body like Erik Cole, Max Pac, etc. Similar players imo.

There is no reason to think he cant play into his 30s at a high level

No need to try a force a Shattenkirk trade now and eat a bunch of salary, we have no righty D pushing for that spot and he’s coming around. Keep him and move him next off season or as a rental in two years. Move McQuaid and try to get rid of Smith. Get something for the rentals first.

Bingo. Cole scored 35 in his age 33 season. See similar happening for Kreider.

I agree with you that there's no need to push him out the door. Just debating the value aspect a bit.

McQuaid and the other rentals will go sooner or later. Smith is probably going to get buried again next fall unless the Rangers find a swap like the did with Spooner and Strome.

But one could argue those guys were better than Kreider has been to this point in their careers and they also aren’t as physical as Kreider is
