The Hurricanes are built for an 82 game season, not a. 28 game playoff.

Go watch the Moneyball movie and see the similarities. Right down to the cheap owner.
A team like Carolina would be a fun team to retool in a video game. A solid Moneyball team that makes the dance but struggles once they're there.

In reality, they have some real good things going for them, but they're incomplete. If they found a taker for Kotka, they would unironically be a fit for Bennett, overpayment and all.

Honestly, the $$$$ for a buyout on Kotka contract is not bad, $850k but its for 9 seasons. I would do it if I was the Canes and had a solid shot of signing Bennett.

Would Panarin waive for Vegas and potentially sign an extension there in a tax friendly state? They’re always in win now mode need more offense. Rangers would have to take salary back. Something around Barbashev who makes 5 mill and plays a hard nosed game and Hague who’s a big dman only 26 made like 2.2 mill and is an rfa. Rangers retain if need be and get a pick from Vegas.

Moneyball ended by saying that it worked in a larger market

Salary caps, I know, but still, if we are going to comment on ownership spending

it's good to have big guys but you *need* guys who play big - bigger than they are.

Berard is one of those guys.

No problem with Berard, the discussion was trading Othmann or Berard, personally I want the guy with the nhl body. I love how Berard plays, I don't think it's gonna be as effective at the nhl level because he's so small, he's not thick like Marchand or even Caufied. He was already sent down after taking a couple hard hits this year. It's just how I feel, I'd keep Othmann over him

I'm not questioning your choice but any reason you would keep Othmann over Berard? Is it just the size?

Othmann played a quarter of a season and couldn’t muster 1 goal as a proclaimed goal scorer

If there’s ever a time to move him for an area of need it’s this summer

OMG, the sky is falling. A young player didn’t score for 20 games after being recalled to a team that was a dumpster fire and playing on the 4th line.

Watching the games, his line was routinely one of the better forechecking and chance creation lines on the team. He had close to 2 hits per game as well in under 10 minutes of ice time.

People clamor for the need for energy and physical play and this kid put up real numbers in the AHL and looked pretty good by the eye test last year at 22. Why write him off? He has scored at every level he has played at.

Also, talk about someone who plays a PIA style, he’s it. He plays with a swagger the team needs more of and he’s a rink rat. People want another Cuylle? Othmann plays a similar style of game. Even their rookie season AHL stats are similar

I think that’s his goal. It clearly explains JT Miller. It will take some time to get there.
Then Drury should move Panarin this summer instead of wasting another season keeping Panarin and allowing him to walk next July 2026. There is no way Panarin could play the way Florida plays. All of their lines play the same way.

If the Rangers are in the same spot in March that they were in this March, Panarin will go at the deadline.

I think this summer is about Kreider, determining if KAM/Jones/LaF are part of the future and getting Fox a new playmate.

Rasmus Dahlin, D

Calm down. I’m not implying Dahlin is available. But the Leafs clearly lack a dynamic, all-around superstar on their blueline, particularly since Rielly has aged out of being a No. 1 offensive defenseman. The acquisition cost for Dahlin would undoubtedly be sky-high – Easton Cowan, Ben Danford and Rielly even as a starting point? – and the fit may not be there as the Buffalo Sabres need NHLers more than prospects now. But given the desperate state of the Sabres franchise, it can’t hurt to kick the tires on literally any of their players at the moment.

If Buffalo is willing to discuss Dahlin, Drury should inquire. Expand the trade to include Peterka. The Rangers apparently love him. If I were Drury, I would have spent some time with Peca in the last two seasons picking his brain on the Sabres younger players because he knows them so well.

Put Fox into the deal. People get mad at trading Fox. As long as the Rangers get a quality return, Fox or any of the other guys should not be protected from a trade. Trade him before the NMC kicks in. His value should be high.

The Rangers need to made wholesale changes. I like Dahlin because he plays with more edge than Fox. Adam is too nice.

We need to start looking with What would Bill Zito do glasses. He would take Dahlin. There were reports Dahlin has grown frustrated with the losing in Buffalo.

What would we need to move for Peterka and Dahlin? That's a big trade

Nobody is saying Othmann should retire and give up but he really didn't do shit in the games he played and we have been hearing about him for a little while now. And what line does he play on? If Kreider stays, you got Laf-Cuylle-Kreider at LW unless someone goes to RW to make room for Othmann.

I suggested something like Fox and Laf for Dahlin and Peterka like two months ago. It’s the only type of move where it would make sense to move Fox because you’d be getting back another 1D, and it’s a big enough shake up trade that would work well for both teams. If Peterka doesn’t want to sign in Buffalo, the Sabres get back long-term certainty at the two positions they’d be moving out. Rangers would need to move more cap since they’d be likely adding $2-3M more depending on what Peterka gets. AFP has him projected to get around 7x$8M. I could see it being a bit higher

Fox has a full no move. He is not waiving for buffalo. Is this board just a congregation of everyone dropped on their head as a child?

Also cap math
Dahlin makes 11
Fox makes 9
Laf makes 7
You say peterka gets 6-7

So our cap goes up 2 million ish and we’re probably not improving that dramatically.

Fox’s NMC kicks in July 1st. I don’t want to trade him FWIW, but something along this line would be ok for me. It’s a major shakeup for both organizations, gives Buffalo cost certainty and helps reshape their roster a bit, and helps the Rangers reshape their core with two players that fit better what Drury wants. That extra $2M is a lot when they need to re-sign Cuylle and Miller this offseason.

It’s a pure fantasyland proposal anyways, but it’s at least better than whatever that Toronto nonsense was from DFO with Cowan and Morgan Rielly

I can’t see Othmaan more than a depth guy
Not shocked if he’s traded but he has some jam so should get another look imo

I'm not sure why Brandon tanev hasn't been discussed around here but he's a guy that is completely in the mold Drury has been adding. Guy is a complete warrior.
Because he turns 34 2 months into the season. Will probably want at least 3 years and a similar rate he's making. That's a Goodrow overpayment for the 4th line and I'm not sure I see a place for him on the 3rd line. Jets used him for 10mins a game after the trade and that didn't change during the playoffs. He's a warrior for sure, but we're a few years late with this warrior.

People said that about perry about a decade ago. Different players but tanev does so much. And so much of what this team does not do.
Corey Perry had a ton of talent and grit. He's a former 50 goal scorer. Taking a shot on Perry who can put the puck in the net is a lot different than spending close to 4m on Tanev. At least see him taking a massive discount like Perry for a 4th line opportunity?
